MBB-FBI: Maryland has received multiple subpoenas (one in March, one in June) connected to questions about a relationships between Terps AC Ranson & agency runner Dawkins. Word out of College Park: "The University complied with the subpoenas by providing responsive records. None of the responsive records shows evidence of any violations of applicable laws or NCAA bylaws by University coaches, staff or players. The University has cooperated and will continue to cooperate fully with the ongoing federal investigation." Interestingly, Yahoo had filed open records requests with the university twice in the last couple of months, only to see the requests delayed. (link); Kansas MBB student-athlete De Sousa back in the spotlight given previous belief he would end up at Maryland & being named specifically in the subpoenas. (link); USC MBB gets another top prospective student-athlete to commit, leading CBSSports.com's Rothstein to comment, "USC's connection with the FBI probe has done nothing to inhibit the program's ability to recruit. Three Top-100 commitments in 2018 and three Top-60 commitments already in 2019." (link, link)
Hoops headliner Goodman covers a ton of details on working group recommendations on how to clean up the summer MBB recruiting calendar. Notes: Two four-day recruiting periods immediately after the April certified events, two scholastic evaluation periods the last two weekends of June, "Establish a 6-day evaluation period in mid-to late July for coaches to attend NCAA youth development camps," access to agents/advisors "July 1 immediately preceding the PSA’s senior year in high school; and Only if the PSA has been identified as an elite senior prospect by USA Basketball," student-athletes who go undrafted in the NBA Draft, but maintain eligibility can return to school if they received an invite to the combine, $6M in travel for the youth development camps, a $1.5M management fee to USA Basketball, $1.05M in event operations & $653K in staffing (total: $9.2M). Lots more. (link); The Athletic's Davis: "Why would a combine invite be necessary? Makes zero sense. Bad idea." (link); Yahoo's Eisenberg: "If you remain enrolled in school and maintain your grades during the draft process, you should have the right to come back if you go unselected. It's simple." (link)
CBSSports.com's Dodd explores the shifting policies on marijuana use by student-athletes around college athletics & Forth Worth-based attorney Dennie, who helps to write such policies at pro & amateur levels offers, "I think in five year, [marijuana testing] is going to be gone." Drug Free Sport Senior Director Kuhr: "When the NCAA changed their sanction on marijuana, it seemed like everybody was at three strikes [before dismissal], then everybody kind of split out their marijuana sanctions to four, maybe five. I don't know if there is anybody out there above five. But it doesn't mean they're not out there." Rutgers uses a five-strike policy, while Colorado State Senior Assoc. AD for Compliance Shanker says there was a belief the Rams would start getting five-star recruits when the state loosened it's laws on marijuana, "That's not been the case." NCAA Chief Medical Officer Hainline points to the reality that many youth grow up with weed being smoked at the dinner table, but he also says marijuana addiction is not discussed enough. (link)
POLITICO with another piece on now six former Ohio State Wrestling student-athletes who say high-profile Ohio Congressman Jordan was aware of inappropriate behavior by a former Buckeyes trainer when he was an AC for the program. An unnamed former coach who worked with Jordan, "Coaching my athletes in Larkins Hall was one of the most difficult things I ever did. It was a cesspool of deviancy. And that’s a whole ’nother story that no one has addressed." More. (link); Jordan was on Fox News yesterday. Of note, "Conversations in a locker room are a lot different than allegations of abuse." Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Penn State Asst. Professor of Geography Andris took at look at data on 160K student-athletes to find how geographic dynamics impact the migration of student-athletes to certain types of schools around the nation. Of note, "Results show that western U.S. and private schools tend to pull students from more distant and diverse locales, although many exceptions exist. Results also show that certain sports are likely to furnish more international than domestic students and that teams create pipelines that source multiple athletes from a single country." There's also, "Tennis players, for example, traveled the farthest — an average of 2,000 miles to attend university. (Players traveled more than 5,000 miles to participate in the University of Tulsa’s tennis program.) For other specialized sports, such as skiing, squash and swimming, athletes traveled more than 800 miles on average." More. (link - article, link - abstract)

Nicholls State AD Roan calls the past year one of the best of his career given the success of the Colonels on & off the field. On hosting an FCS Playoff game against South Dakota, "The NCAA site rep told me after the game that it was as good of an atmosphere he has ever seen for a playoff game. We absolutely put our best foot forward and showed the NCAA that if we can do what we need to do on the field, we’re going to always put a competitive bids together and try to make that an annual tradition." Roan will keep his eye on more facility upgrades & specifically notes a potential student-athlete academy center. Says of future, "The challenge for us is to group a couple of good years together. We are looking forward to that challenge." (link)
Central Michigan is getting closer to adding the $31.5M Chippewa Champions Alumni Center that would house a new FB locker room, sports medicine space, visiting locker rooms & offices. CMU AD Alford: "Alumni and donors are buying into the vision." The university's board still has to approve plans & there's no exact timeline on the project yet. Some renderings are included here. (link)
South Dakota will get shovels in the ground for the Coyote's new Football outdoor practice space, complete with artificial turf to "give us a greater opportunity to practice outside" per FB HC Nielson. Field could be ready as early as this fall and following the season permanent seats will be installed on the west side of the DakotaDome, over top of an expanded FB locker room. Overall pricetag is $26.3M. (link)
For the first time, South Carolina will require a seat donation for the right to certain spots for Women's Basketball games. For first-row courtside seating, fans owe a $400 annual fee, while lower section rows in sections 105 and 114 require a $200 payment. The change will only affect 320 seats in Colonial Life Arena. Gamecocks AD Tanner: "This additional revenue will help sustain the cost of attendance requirements for more than 500 student-athletes, retain the tremendous coaches we have here, continue to build and maintain top-notch facilities and fund all of our athletic programs as we compete for SEC and national championships. The cost to compete and win at the highest levels has undoubtedly increased. The addition of basketball seat donations came after careful deliberation and discussion regarding the impact on our fans. The successes that we have shared and the quality of the student-athlete experience here is in large part because of our fans and great coaches." Similar fees for MBB run $1500-$2,000. (link)
It's Personnel: Wright State promotes Baseball AC Sogard to HC. (link); Notre Dame AD Swarbrick goes with Oregon Women's Tennis HC Silverio to lead the Fighting Irish. For those counting, Ducks AD Mullens is now on the hunt for a third HC, including Softball and Women's Golf. (link); Swarbrick promotes Track & Field/XC AHC Sparks to the top spot. (link); Duquesne AD Harper tabs Florida Tech Women's LAX HC Desrosiers to the same spot in Pittsburgh. (link); Louisville Baseball HC McDonnell picked to lead the 2019 USA Baseball Collegiate Team, his second stint with the squad but first as manager. (link); San Jose State Women's Gymnastics HC Wright calls it a career after 25 seasons with the Spartans. (link); Oregon Men's Tennis AHC Piibor will take over the Gonzaga program. (link); Former Michigan State Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine Strampel has retired from his faculty position at the university. Strampel oversaw former Spartans doc Nassar. (link)
Alabama reports 13 minor violations to the NCAA this year, with only one stemming from Football. Comparatively, HC Saban's squad reported nine a year ago. This year, an AC responded to an "unknown text message which resulted in impermissible communication with the parent of a 2019 prospective student-athlete." A current MBB player tweeted a recruit as the only violation for his team. Most of the violations involved mistaken communication in the recruiting process. Pocket dials were to blame for a gymnastics and a soccer coach calling recruits outside of contact periods. Baseball failed to provide the required days off from athletically-related activities during and institutional vacation period. Overall, fewest self-reported violations from the Crimson Tide since 2015. (link)
Colorado will enhance its discrimination and harassment training and policies in the wake of the situation with former Football AC Tumpkin. The first recommendation from the review committee that will be implemented is that faculty and staff be required to complete training every three years, not five. Further the Office of Institutional Equity and Compliance will report to Sr. VC/CFO and committee chair Fox. "Beyond that, [Chancellor] DiStefano accepted a recommendation to strengthen partnerships between the equity office, campus human relations and faculty relations to increase faculty understanding and trust in the Title IX program, as well as a recommendation to create a central liaison role between the equity office and the senior women's administrator in athletics, Ceal Berry. ... DiStefano did not accept a recommendation to elevate athletics and human resources to the chancellor's cabinet, which is his executive leadership team. He explained in a June memo to Fox that other avenues already existed for the departments to 'continue our integration work.'" (link)
Interesting read on the impact of microfracture surgery for athletes, an operation that has limited the performance of high-liners like former Ohio State MBB standout Oden, and, according to a 2018 study has a 66% rate of failure. NBPA consulting doctor Bedi: "It’s not that microfracture doesn’t have a role. But there is an increasing consideration and trend to utilizing some other techniques as the first-line operation. It used to be these other techniques were (used to salvage) a failed microfracture. Now we recognize it may be best to go to these other techniques first." (link)
WSJ writes on the acquisition strategy of Disney boss Iger & there's probably some correlations to relationship-building in any industry, including college athletics. 1) Identify a complimentary company that's not even for sale or few know is for sale; 2) "win over the top executive by extolling Disney’s vision for the company’s future"; and, 3) Figure out how to best integrate the company across Disney's business lines. It's the playbook Iger used for Pixar, Marvel & Lucasfilm, plus his on-going courtship of Fox. (link)
Also Noticed: Former Drake athletic trainer Kerr & the university have settled a wrongful termination lawsuit centered around Kerr's exit back in 2016. No terms released. (link); A U.S. House candidate in Tennessee had made a commercial mocking former Vols FB HC Jones' brick-by-brick mantra. (link); Athlon Sports columnist Fischer with some officiating updates: "College officials promoted to the NFL: Land Clark (Pac-12), Matt Edwards (Big Ten), Chad Hill (SEC), Anthony Jeffries (SEC), Tony Josselyn (SEC), Mark Stewart (Big 12) and Don Willard (Big Ten)." See any of your favorites?:) (link); Twitter continues removing fake accounts at a rate of about 1M/day, after suspending more than 70M in May and June. VP for Trust and Safety Harvey: "One of the biggest shifts is in how we think about balancing free expression versus the potential for free expression to chill someone else’s speech. Free expression doesn’t really mean much if people don’t feel safe." (link); "Univision Communications Inc. is exploring a sale of Fusion Media Group, which houses websites including Gizmodo and Deadspin, as it pursues a companywide restructuring following a leadership change." Last year's attempt to sell 20% stake in Fusion for $200M failed. (link); ESPNEWS is once again Nielsen rated, could mean some additional college football TV ratings this year that were missed last season. (link)
