Jessica Barbini, our Farm to School Coordinator, traveled with a team from Sidney Central Schools to the Northeast Farm to School Institute at Shelburne Farms in Vermont last month. Check out her reflection of the institute below:
"The Farm to School Institute at Shelburne Farms is a 3-day intensive event where folks from 12 school districts across the Northeast with all different levels of involvement are invited to collaborate and develop clear values and actions plans to implement into their schools. Vermont Feed, a project of Shelburne Farms, partners with the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont (NOFA-VT) to create a “3C Model” framework for igniting change in the classroom, cafeteria, and community. Representatives from the Food and Health Network attended the Institute for the first time in 2017 with a team from Johnson City School District, and had the exciting opportunity to attend for the second time earlier this summer.
I traveled with a passionate team of people from Sidney Central Schools where we spent time discussing our goals with farm to school and in turn, cultivated our team dynamics. Work to change a system as encompassing as the relationships between farm and school can be difficult and without reward at times, and I believe that it is equally important to build support among peers driven by the same work."

Center on Budget and Policy Priorities: Senate Ag Committee's Bipartisan Farm Bill Strengthens SNAP & Avoids Harming SNAP Households: The farm bill that passed the Senate Agriculture Committee on June 13 includes a bipartisan nutrition title that would reauthorize the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly food stamps) and improve SNAP’s program integrity and operations. The bill also would expand the 2014 farm bill’s pilot program to test promising approaches to job training and other employment-related activities for SNAP participants and would make targeted investments in SNAP to help seniors and people with disabilities, as well as Indian Tribes. And, the bill would make changes to and increase funding for certain grant programs outside of SNAP. Read more here.

Increasing the health and wealth of communities and the local farmers who supply them requires physical infrastructure to collect and move food. But it also requires a significant level of coordination - people and organizations who are able to make fruitful connections between the food and the consumer; who work to pilot new ideas; who make the political and business ground fertile for success.
