Summer Student Intern for Safe Church

It’s an exciting time to be a part of Safe Church Ministry. So much is happening; please carefully read all the articles below!

Summer is here, and we are blessed again this year to have a student intern. We have asked her to introduce herself to you:

Hi, my name is Hope Stutzman, and I am pleased to be the Safe Church Ministry intern for this summer. I recently graduated from Kuyper College with my Bachelors of Social Work degree. Currently I am taking a gap year before continuing my education to get a Master’s of Social Work degree. In the future, I would like to go into some form of counseling, and through my experiences, I know that I enjoy working with children. My interest in working with Safe Church Ministry came from working with victims and survivors of domestic violence in my internship. I mostly interacted with groups and sometimes individuals. Much of what I did in my internship was answering domestic violence hotline calls, co-facilitating and observing groups, and providing resources to clients. When I read the description for the Safe Church internship, I was very interested because the church can be a great support to someone who has experienced, or is experiencing, abuse. I have lived in Grand Rapids my entire life, and I grew up non-denominational. When I am not working or going to school I enjoy music, swing dancing, and doing anything that involves being outside (hiking, camping, kayaking, going to the beach, etc.). I’m also excited to learn more about the CRC denomination outside of the theology I was taught in school.

Synod Has Spoken: Are We Listening?

Synod 2018 has spoken loudly and clearly saying, we must do more about abuse prevention and response. Find out what recommendations were adopted and what they might mean for your classis, your church, and you.

Responding to Abuse: A Toolkit for Churches

Safe Church Ministry continues to receive a growing number of requests for assistance with situations of abuse. This resource, Responding to Abuse: A Toolkit for Churches can begin to answer some of the most common questions that arise.

September is Coming … Don’t Miss it!

September 21-22, in Grand Rapids, MI, Safe Church is hosting its bi-national conference, Equipped in our #MeToo World. Join us for amazing presenters and valuable networking with safe church team members from across the U.S. and Canada. AND September 23 is Abuse Awareness Sunday. Watch for details soon – we hope many churches will take an offering for our new Classis Fund to help establish the Safe Church Classis Coordinator position.

S.O.S Sharing our Stories

Calling all stories: Do you, or someone you know, have a story to share? Those who have not experienced abuse can find it difficult to understand its deep impacts. By listening to the stories of those who have been there, we can better understand; and our response and prevention efforts can be more effective. Contact Safe Church Ministry if you have a story to share.
