Building on DC 37’s existing education and workforce training programs that provide city workers with basic job skills, technical training, and leadership development, DC 37 will use Credly digital badges to recognize members’ knowledge and competencies, as well as clearly outline the necessary skills for a member to advance in their chosen field.

The Washington State community college system has announced a new state-wide initiative to provide professional development badges to faculty and employer-discoverable badges to students. Each college will be able to implement badging as well as guided pathways within their courses or programs, particularly for co-curricular activities that typically aren't represented on transcripts.

A common technical approach for issuing digitally-signed qualifications will be developed to ensure that certificates from one EU Member State can be understood and correctly interpreted in anyother. The approach will be based on open standards and integrated into the new Europass platform where digitally-signed qualifications can be stored and shared. The Open Badge standard is compatible with the Blockchain.

Every MOOC platform now offers at least one type of microcredential, and some platforms offer as many as three different types. This analysis covers 11 types of microcredentials offered by five MOOC platforms. The analysis compares credentials offered, based on price and effort (determined by time spent), and concludes that inconsistencies mean it is difficult to interpret their significance.

Lloyd Dean, Head of Digital and Innovative Learning at EDF, reflects on a conversation he had with Grainne Hamilton on digital credentials for his Future of Learning podcast series. In the post, Lloyd considers Cities of Learning, companies of learning, and cites the value of digital credentials in relation to the finding by Cogent Skills (the UK's strategic body for skills in the science industries), that roles based around generic skills will form 81% of the future workforce.

In his latest visual thinkery, Bryan Mathers comments that when deciding to issue Open Badges, 'make sure you stand in the shoes of the people you intend to be the recipients of your badges, and understand why they might want to earn badges from your organisation in the first place…'
