PREZ's NOTES

Fiber Artists in our group have inspired me to step outside of my comfort zone, my goal is to actual have a piece in the annual show, so THANK YOU my artist friends for encouragement.

I had fun painting my rocks and I am having my sewing students help me hide my rocks at Yanaguana this month.  They saw my rocks and have made their own.

Our next challenge is 100 lines; it can be painted, sewn or just use your imagination.  I do hope you chose to do the challenge.

I want to thank Vicky Siptak for selling her garments and jewelry for charity, I hope you were able to go home with a beautiful creation that Vicky has designed. In saying this, I would like to see other artist bring in your wares to sell.  You just need to send me an email at ida@marisoldelunafoundation.org, we can get you signed up.

There will be a “Parking Lot”, posing questions for next month; “What is your art goal for the month?”  “How do you recharge your life when you are stuck?”

I will be sending out the budget for the year and you will need to vote on in for August.  Please look it over when it is sent out and let me know if you have any questions. You will also be voting on the meeting minutes for June and July.  These will also be sent out to you via the FASA email tree.

Thank you so much for allowing me to be me!

EDUCATION
STUDIO TOURS

We all love the Studio Tours.  We learn so much about each other, get inspired, and create great ideas of our own after the tour.  Now it’s time to put together the schedule for three upcoming events.  I have two in the works for spring, but I need one for this fall, either in October or November.  I’d like a member to volunteer to show us where they come up with their ideas, show us their space, and give us a chance to get to know them better.  It takes about an hour of your time.  Usually 8-10 members join in the tour.  It’s important for us to see that all studio spaces are different, large or small, cluttered or cleaned etc.  Mine is just a corner of a family room upstairs, but it works for me.

What works for you?  Share your information with us.  After the tour, we go out to lunch somewhere close by.  By the time we part, we all know a little more about ourselves, each other, and the organization we’re a part of.  Please notify me that you’d be willing to be our tour guide this fall.

Art journaling!  We’ve taken a break from the art journaling for now.

Calls for Entry:
  • International Quilt Festival presents Power of Women - Online entries from April 16 – Sept 3, 2018 http://callforentriespower.com/
  • Fiberart International 2019 seeks to exhibit the best of contemporary art and invites submissions that reflect a wide range of works related to the fiber medium. The exhibition is recognized around the world as a benchmark that documents trends and innovations in the field. The goal of the exhibition is to include innovative work rooted in traditional fiber materials, structure, processes and history, as well as art that explores unexpected relationships between fiber and other creative disciplines.
  • Sacred Threads - October 1, 2018 - January 10, 2019 http://www.sacredthreadsquilts.com/default.htm
    • Quilts submitted should explore themes of joy, spirituality, peace/brotherhood, inspiration, grief, or healing.  Quilts must be an original design or an original execution of a traditional pattern.
    • Quilt should have a minimum perimeter of 80"and maximum of 288"(sum of all sides). (If your quilt is close to these dimensions but does not quite meet the requirements, you may still enter your work.)
    • Each quilt must have a 4" horizontal hanging sleeve and an identifying label on the back of the quilt. Quilts exhibited at previous Sacred Threads exhibits are not eligible.
Places to Shop-Learn-Show:  Discussion:
  • The Diversity of Art pages are in!  Last chance to submit is at the FASA meeting 9 July!  They are all looking wonderful!  The book will be bound and ready for pictures at the October SPUTNIK meeting to submit to the juried annual show.
  • Kenectivities Members’ Installation is the next goal and we encouraged everyone to create something with movement mounted on a 12” x 12” x 1.5” canvas.  We need the canvas to be at least 1.5” deep to keep the hanging mechanisms hidden.  Michael’s is having a sale on canvas right now and the “Professional” level canvas is perfect for what we need.  We discussed dangles and decided no dangles off the bottom of the piece as it might interfere with anything placed below.  You can come off the canvas perpendicularly to make the piece 3D.  These pieces will be part of the December FASA Annual Show so need to be ready to install by Monday, Nov 26.
Presentation:

We discussed our relationships with our stuff and how we organized it.  We talked about having to downsize and how it is hard but feels good when complete.  We supported folks who weren’t ready to let go of their stuff.  You will be ready when you are ready and that’s okay.  We talked about different ways to organize.  One of the best things I heard was to look at your stuff in terms of “things I want to keep” and then set free the rest.  Many of us approach our stuff looking in terms of “things I want to give away” and that seems to be harder.
We had a great discussion with fun and sharing and support!

Presentation Schedule:

These will be about 10-15 minutes unless otherwise noted.  Volunteers to present your passion are welcome.
We won’t be able to visit Kitty in Nov, she has a conflict with the date, but suggested maybe the following March.   Bonita offered to show us how to make the wonderful puzzle necklace she was sporting at the meeting, instead.

MEMBERS IN THE NEWS
“All Things Possible in Fiber Art” by Annie Centeno
“All Things Possible in Fiber Art” that is the theme for the 2018 FASA Annual Juried Exhibition.  What is intended by this theme you may ask?  Well let me share a little about myself and what fiber art has made possible in my life.

It all started back in year 2001 or thereabouts. I was attending the Southwest School of Art Annual Fiesta Art Fair where I came upon the table of an artist who had amazingly hand-dyed and screen-printed tablecloths, table napkins, and surface design on whole cloth.  I was blown away and utterly fascinated by the concepts.  Art on fabric was a natural for me since stitching and fabric had been a part of my childhood, my mother being a skilled seamstress for the home and family.  The artist was none other than Susie Monday who proceeded to explain briefly the process and invited me to enroll in classes she was teaching at SSA.

It was in that first class that I met (among others) Kathy Furukawa (who eventually went on to become FASA President) and Leslie Tucker Jenison (well known contemporary quilt artist and co-curator of “Dinner At Eight Artists” featured at International Quilt Exhibitions.)  We were all awestruck with the possibilities in dyeing cloth, screen-printing, and the many other techniques Susie shared in her classes.  Prior to fiber art, I was busy exploring metal enameling in copper and silver (classes at SSA.)  But that medium was challenging to master and I was making slow progress.  With the skills I was learning in the Surface Design on Fabric classes and I gathered confidence quickly, and was soon commissioned for an art quilt banner by the Women’s Center at Our Lady of the Lake University.

I entered my very first juried Exhibition in the FASA Annual Show 2004 “Casting Threads Upon the Water” held at the Witte Museum.  Two of my three entries were accepted into the show: “Out-Minnowed” and “Turtle Abyss” which employed shibori dyeing techniques.  I was elated and in love with fiber art!   I have since entered other FASA Exhibitions and count myself lucky to have had others pieces selected for exhibit.

When I retired from full-time employment in 2015 I had more time to pursue my fiber art passions and became more involved in FASA.  By volunteering in various committees, and now having been elected as 2nd VP Chair of the Annual Exhibit I find that it challenges me to go beyond myself in helping others find channels to express themselves in this art form, and to educate the public about the amazing art that our fiber arts community produces.

Though FASA one can explore the many resources available through affiliations with other organizations such as SAQA, International Quilt Association, etc. also through artist networking and the many workshops, classes and educational opportunities available through our organization.  The boundaries are limitless in terms of the support, generosity, and camaraderie that one finds being connected to the fiber art world.  I’m sure the same could be said for many other art forms and interests as well, but for me it is FIBER that makes it FUN!

So in a nutshell, some of what Fiber Art has made possible for me is:
  1. Developed my confidence as an artist!
  2. Brought me to meet wonderful fiber artist friends for life!
  3. Matched me up with an organization that satisfies most of my fiber desires!
  4. Continues to challenge my development of skills and create even better works of art as I progress in this journey.

What about you?  What is your fiber art story?  I’d love to hear about it and be able to share with others in future FASA Newsletters.  What is it that calls to you when you hear “All Things Possible In Fiber Art?”  Maybe it is about exploring new dimensions in your art expression?  I’d love to hear about it and share that story too.  Let me know.  Contact me at anniecentenoT1@gmail.com.  More than that, I hope that you are considering entering the show.  Whether your work is accepted into the exhibition or not, it is the process of letting your art be seen that is an expression of faith and confidence that you have in YOU!

A big thank you to a very special member, Vicki Siptak!  At the July FASA meeting, Vicki offered numerous of her coordinated creations - tunics/tops with the necklaces designed for each specific garment for sale, with all proceeds being donated to the Food Pantry. As Vicki wrote, “Your check (or cash, no credit cards) will help the pantry meet the Summer’s increased food needs with school out.”  Her “Art 4 FOOD” event , plus member’s direct pantry donations of cash, check and groceries in bags, raised far more than our usual monthly total donation. SNIPPETS: Little tidbits of interest from your editor

I found a really nice article for you about the role of drawing in fiber art - and it was written by Susan Shie, one of our beloved nationally-known presenters! Drawing might come in handy for your 100 Line challenge. Click on the image below to download the article.

Also, in last month's Snippets, I included a link to an article debating whether fiber was "art" or "craft." I promised to publish the best response. Here it is, from Carmen Goyette:

"Thanks for including the article in the newsletter.  I read it and found it fascinating.

I get tired of people turning their nose up at one thing or another.  It makes me sad to see us all tearing each other’s creativity down.  I like to embrace the joy that each artist brings, regardless of the quality of the end product.  I enjoy knowing that the artist had fun making something, or at least had the chance to get their message out of their system (for the sad and angry stuff).

Thanks for sending along a thought piece, always good to stretch our minds,
Carmen"

Well said, Carmen!!

The deadline for the FASA Newsletter is the 25th of each month. We'd love to have your news about shows, techniques, galleries, events - send an email to me if you'd like to be included!
Remember, fiber is good for you!
