spaced 2: future recall

A touring exhibition by International Art Space

Crossing the boundaries of art, history and community, spaced 2: future recall is a collection of artworks that invites you to discover regional Western Australia from the viewpoint of international and Australian contemporary artists who completed extended residencies in remote communities. A variety of old and new media coalesce to bring experiences and artworks from all walks of life.

This exhibition has been brought to Umbrella through support from the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland, and the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy, an initiative of the Australia, State and Territory governments.

Compact Prints 2018

International & National Printmakers

The Compact Prints international exhibition and exchange has been Umbrella Studio’s signature biennial exhibition since 2002. Over the years it has evolved into a significant benchmark of international engagement for printmakers across the globe.

Young Indigenous Printmakers

Linocut prints created by local high school students during skills development workshops in the studio downstairs at Umbrella. A collaborative outreach project with Gallery Services, Townsville City Council.

Gallery Lighting Upgrade


We are very excited to share that with the help of your generous donations and funding from the Arts Infrastructure Fund from Arts Queensland we will be upgrading the gallery lighting system very soon! The new LED technology  will cut our energy use down by 75% and will improve the viewing quality of artists' work. The gallery will have to close for a few days when this work takes place, keep an eye on our Facebook/Instagram pages for the closure notice.



Umbrella on tour

Ad Wer by Tommy Pau has just finished being displayed at the Gladstone Regional Art Gallery and will next be on display at The Centre, Beaudesert - opening on Friday 14 September.

Wanton, Wild & Unmagined by Alison McDonald has travelled to South Australia and has just finished exhibiting at Port Pirie Regional Gallery. Alison visited the gallery to deliver an artist talk and workshop. The exhibition will now head to Signal Point Gallery, SA - opening on Wednesday 15 August. This tour is managed by Museums and Galleries Queensland.

   


This project has been assisted by the Australian Government's Visions of Australia program; and supported by the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy, an initiative of the Australian, state and territory governments.

Umbrella CIAF wrap up

Umbrella has showcased work by Townsville artists at the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) since the Fair began nine years ago and this year was our most successful yet. A diverse range of artworks were featured including prints, paintings and intricate Daris and masks by six artists including Martina Ah Sam, Toby Cedar, Shirley Dawson, Gail Mabo, Tommy Pau and Obery Sambo. The high caliber of the Umbrella display attracted significant sales during the preview opening for museums, curators and collectors. Of particular note, the Bendigo Art Gallery purchased...
