This month we share some of the recent activities of our UNESCO Aotearoa Youth Leaders (formerly known as the Youth Reference Group).
Reflections on Model UN
The annual New Zealand Model United Nations teaches global citizenship to high school students in an authentic way, by assigning young people to countries and enabling them to experience how the UN works. The New Zealand National Commission for UNESCO is a regular sponsor of this event. UNESCO Aotearoa Youth Leader Peter MacKenzie (pictured holding sign) reflects on the experience.
One of our UNESCO Aotearoa Youth Leaders, Shaymaa Arif, has been working as an Arabic/English interpreter at Moria Refugee Camp in Greece. Read her account of this profoundly life-changing experience.
Some of our UNESCO Aotearoa Youth Leaders will be running a stand at the Festival for the Future event in Wellington from 27-29 June. The Festival for the Future showcases youth-led innovation. It brings together a diverse range of emerging leaders to connect, showcase what's possible and create the future. We will report back on our Youth Leaders' experience of the event in our next issue.
Celebrating adult learning
All adult New Zealanders are invited to take part in the Adult and Community Education (ACE) Aotearoa's Festival of Adult Learning Ahurei Ākonga during the week of September 3-9. You can either think about what you want to learn or participate in or host an event. See the ACE Aotearoa website to learn more or email Mary Gavigan at marygavigan5@gmail.com. The National Commission is a supporter of this week –previously called Adult Learners' Week – which is a UNESCO initiative.
