Reading Camp

I can't stop looking at this new banner. It comes from a church in DC. I bought one for the church sign on Cedarcroft Road that people read when they walk their dogs or drop their kids off at the Cedarcroft School. It makes me smile and cringe at the same time. The challenge to love our neighbor as our self is just as hard now as it was when Jesus first repeated it to his followers.

The only thing that makes this task and spiritual practice any easier is that we have each other. The gospel this week is all about this challenge. Come worship with me this week at 8:00 or 10:00 am.

If you want to help plan the Forum on Faith conversations for the Fall and Winter, please join me in the Windsor Room at 9:00 am on Sunday!

Reading Camp

The annual week of service and fun in the Remington Neighborhood is fast approaching. Many thanks to Deacon Linda and the team for all of the prep work they have done. Also, thanks for the books and many of your financial contributions. If you can volunteer for a morning or a day to work in the kitchen, listen to children or get creative with arts and crafts, please email Linda.

Music Notes

This Sunday, July 22, Joshua Banbury will sing Stephen Schwartz's "Beautiful City," which Schwartz wrote for the 1973 film version of Godspell. The song is performed near the end of the film, sung by Jesus, as he leads his disciples through the streets of New York City. After the terrorist attacks of September 11, "Beautiful City" took on new resonance, and a new generation latched onto the song's optimism and inspirational message.

On July 29, Amy Bailey and Dottie Doepke will sing "Give Ear unto Me" by the Venetian composer Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739). The words are from Psalm 27: "Give ear unto me, Lord, I beseech thee, for I have walked in thy commandments." Marcello must have loved the duet form, since he composed 83 of them.

We will host the monthly Interfaith Peace Service on Wednesday, August 22 at 7:30 PM in our church. David Neff is arranging some special music of course. Let's have a potluck supper at 6:30pm!
