How protein fragments could help to tackle the cause of hay fever
For hay fever sufferers, the end may be in sight for another year of sniffles, sneezes and itchy eyes caused by grass pollen. But while many people are able to treat their symptoms with over the counter medications, for some sufferers, a different approach is needed to tackle the root cause.
Researchers at Imperial College London are investigating new hay fever therapies based on protein fragments from grass, which they have found can help to reduce symptoms after just three weeks of treatment. Read full article.
Immune cells can switch from ‘gang members’ to ‘police officers’
When the immune system overreacts, as in an allergic reaction, cells causing trouble can change into cells that dampen the reaction.
Learning to control the mechanism behind the switch could be used to make more effective immunotherapies, say the authors of the new study, led by Imperial College London.

Annual Stimulating Physics East Midlands Network Day Conference 29 September 2018; 9:30am - 3:20pm
The conference features a keynote lecture ‘Bees and Physics’ by Dr Martin Bencsik of Nottingham Trent University. You also have the opportunity to choose from a busy programme of workshops. These will be run by IOP Physics Network Coordinators, SPN Teaching and Learning Coaches and other experienced presenters.

Creative Quarter 2018 23 November 2018
Creative Quarter is a free event for 13 - 19 year olds. Run in partnership with other South Kensington partners, including the Victoria and Albert Museum and The Royal Albert Hall, this fun and interactive day aims to give an insight into various creative industries and careers.

Proto Maker Challenge This is a fully funded programme for students aged 11-14. The programme works with secondary schools local to White City and involves three full days of making in the Reach Out Makerspace and two after school mentoring sessions. The Nancy Rothwell Award 2018 Competition
The Nancy Rothwell Award 2018 specimen drawing competition for 7 – 18 year olds is now open for submissions. Prizes include an experience day at the Royal Veterinary College for students, and their school can also win £100.
There are three age categories (7-11, 12-14 and 15-18) and prizes will be awarded to three runners up and the winner.Visit the Royal Society of Biology website for more information.

School Visits Programme
Jane Marshall, Imperial's Outreach School Visits Programme Manager, offers entertaining and informative talks to sixth formers in state schools across London and the South East.
Topics covered include the benefits of a degree, choosing your course and university and an insight into uni life, writing an excellent Personal Statement and preparing for university interviews.
