Welcome to our July Newsletter.

Like the rest of the country, the nursery is very hot and dry at the moment.  We have had no rain to speak of for more than 7 weeks, and temperatures regularly between 26-30°CThe plants have every right to look a bit frazzled (we do!), but, in fact, are looking remarkably well.  They must have their roots deep down into the clay...

See below for our selection of plants looking good on the nursery this month.

Kniphofia

These are the 'stand-out' plants on the nursery at the moment. They provide weeks of interest, especially as the flower spikes change in colour as they develop.  We have a wide selection of varieties, from the softer shades of 'Moonstone', to bright glowing 'Incandesce'.  Certainly a plant we wouldn't want to be without.

Monarda
'Westacre Purple'

We have been really impressed with Monarda 'Westacre Purple' this summer.  Despite the heat, it has been in flower for weeks, and shows no sign of mildew, which can be a common problem with other varieties.  It's obviously a good strong 'Norfolk' plant!  And we love the smell of the foliage...

Eurybia radula 'August Sky'

It may not be August yet, but this former Aster is already a cloud of light purple daisies.  It really is a tough plant, and is much loved by the bees and butterflies - there is always something to be seen feeding on it.

Other Plants of interest now:
Tulbaghia 'Cosmic'
Tulbaghia 'Cosmic'

'Cosmic' is a beautiful hybrid of this South African bulbous perennial.  With good drainage it is much hardier than people think, and will flower for months throughout the summer.  Beautiful rich honey evening scent is reason enough to grow it.

Pennisetum macrourum
Pennisetum macrourum

This has by far the longest flower spike of any Pennisetum!  Bristly flower spikes will be up to 30cm long on a plant to 1.5 metres.  Dramatic!

Verbascum 'Coneyhill Yellow'
Verbascum
'Coneyhill Yellow'

A reliably perennial Verbascum hybrid that occurred here on the nursery. Soft yellow with a flush of pink, it is an easy colour to fit into the border.  Will flower continuously through the summer if spent flower stems are cut out.

Pennisetum 'Fairy Tails'
Pennisetum 'Fairy Tails'

Mass-planted by the RHS at Wisley, this Pennisetum is always popular - and it's a great name!
