Exploring other people's backyards

Backyards are private spaces. They're exterior extensions of our interior living spaces. Like our living rooms and kitchens, they reflect who we are and what we care about in both overt and subtle ways.

As a confirmed non-gardener who is literally unable to keep even a potato plant on the windowsill alive, what I love about July in Buffalo is being able to legally and legitimately get into my neighbors' backyards. I walk a lot. Imagining what lies behind the houses I pass is fun. Getting to actually find out is even more fun! And some of the most imaginative and delightful gardens hide behind some of Buffalo's most humble abodes.

There are literally dozens of backyards to see every Thursday and Friday evening this month, all part of the Open Gardens series. Garden walks are taking place every weekend through the middle of August in communities from Amherst to West Seneca. My favorites are the ones like the Ken-Ton Garden Tour (this weekend) and the Northwest Buffalo Garden Tour (August 3 and 4) that have a "starry night" component. It's lovely to see these gardens all lit up and enjoy the camaraderie of the gardeners after dark.

And then there's the grandaddy of them all, Garden Walk Buffalo on the last weekend in July. Featuring more than 400 gardens and encompassing the entire West Side, it is the largest (and the best) in the nation. Include the The Buffalo Garden Party at the beautiful First Presbyterian Church on Symphony Circle that Saturday evening in your backyard-filled weekend.

Since I don't garden, I know very little about plants. I have foraged in the forest, but never in the city. So recognizing edible plants growing wild in urban spaces--including my own disheveled backyard--intrigues me. If you promise not to forage in other people's backyards while exploring their gardens this month, I will share with you Sarah Bacon's Urban Foraging--Edible Wild Plants in the City. It's a real eye-opener.

It's Thursday. I've got to go pick up my Journey's End Green Shoots for New Americans CSA. I am happy to enjoy the bounty grown by my neighbors right here in the city.
