Hi <<First Name>>,

Metal and skin on display... we present two otherworldly projects: Clemens Ascher's dystopian "Modernist Lunchbreak" and a portrait of Anthony Daniels as the ageless C-3PO by Cade Martin. Two beautifully staged cars complete this month's quartet - a vintage CGI Lincoln Continental visualized by our London team and a revamped Toyota Avalon by Alex Bernstein.

Enjoy the show,

Christoph

A Modernist Lunchbreak - Clemens Ascher

In this brilliant new story by Clemens Ascher, he explores "the relation between past visions of a modernist future and contemporary sociological phenomena." Our London team collaborated closely with the photographer during the creation of an abstract world in which surreal business people eat their lunch on the go. For a detailed description of this series and a great making-of check out our Behance post.

Lincoln - CGI

Lincoln - CGI

Present Tense is a portfolio piece inspired by the fourth generation Lincoln Continental, one of Kennedy's official presidential limousines. We wanted to show this iconic vehicle in present-day settings for an effect of temporal dislocation, heightened by the differences between presidents of these two eras: the car's most famous passenger and the present occupant of the White House. As an unknown motorist drives through modern America, the car's elegance and association with a period of change and optimism brings a time-shifted feel to each scene that it moves through.

Using back plates from photographer Malte Bartjen, our London team chose locations that would work as a series, while giving each image its own distinct atmosphere. To blend the CGI Lincoln with its contemporary settings, we fine-tuned the colours for a classic Kodachrome look. Take some time for a road trip to our website for more.

Toyota - Alex Bernstein

Toyota - Alex Bernstein

Commissioned to establish a more premium look for Toyota, Alex Bernstein took the newly designed Avalon to architectural gems near Palm Springs and cool city locations around San Diego. For eight intense days the photographer captured brochure and web material, shot cinemagraphs and directed videos of Toyota's flagship. All cars were photographed in situ, but things don't alway go as planned. In this particular shot the vehicle couldn't be maneuvered into the initial hero spot, so a backup plan was made up on the fly which actually surpassed the original idea. Working closely with Bernstein, our post team in NY cleaned up the series and colour graded the shots to complement the new style of the campaign. More of this series on our website.

C-3PO - Cade Martin

C-3PO - Cade Martin

Cade Martin got assigned to portray one of the most recognizable movie characters for Smithsonian Magazine. For over forty years actor Anthony Daniels has embodied the role of the endearing droid C-3PO, lending him the voice and fussy human character traits that offer comic relief when danger and tension arise in the Star Wars movies. While other characters and actors have come and gone or significantly aged over the decades, C-3PO remains almost unchanged, and at age 72, Daniels still greatly enjoys slipping into his role. Our NY studio handled the post production and added some fog to intensify the atmosphere. If you ever wish to get a closer look at C-3PO, you can view a costume from 1983’s Return of the Jedi at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.
