D1.jobs: New opportunities below at VCU, UT Chattanooga (x2), Boston U., Middle Tennessee State & Brown. Post your openings in the same space where thousands of administrators start their days. Here's how.
New Mexico: During a four-hour Board of Regents meeting yesterday to review the recommended sport cuts, some voices in Albuquerque questioned Lobos AD Nuñez on why FB avoided being involved. Nuñez's response, "We are talking about football internally. […] Football, as well as every other sport, is going to be held to the same accountability when it comes to managing their budgets." Potential belt-tightening moves for FB are the elimination of some meals, not staying in a hotel the night before a home game, changes in how the squad travels & fewer recruiting trips for coaches. Also, Nuñez on why Men's Soccer over Baseball, "When you look across the board, our first fundamental principals were to make sure that we were trying figure out financial (decisions), our compliance with Title IX (implications) and ultimately to be in alignment with the Mountain West. And as we looked at all these different factors, if baseball was here today, you’d have the same support from their group (as soccer had). There’s no right or wrong reason as far as one over another." (link); UNM Prez Stokes on pushback that leadership didn't take enough time to thoroughly review options, "I know we will spend a lot of time helping people digest what is in that report. I think it’s really difficult to make these kinds of decisions and it is expected that people would be enormously upset by it. More time won’t change how difficult this is." (link); Albuquerque Journal Sports Editor Harrison says Men's Soccer will certainly be missed. Overall, "Many of those young men and women, for these reasons, will have opportunities and land softly elsewhere, sooner or later. That’s where we in Albuquerque lose out. I feel more sorry for us than for them." (link)
Jacksonville AD Ricker-Gilbert gets a new five-year deal to continue leading the Dolphins & also adds the title of Senior VP of the university. JU Prez Cost: "Alex has done a tremendous job creating excellence in the department through active and engaged leadership. During his time as athletic director, our more than 500 Division I student-athletes have achieved unprecedented success in the classroom and at graduation, we have substantially upgraded our athletics branding, fundraising and sponsorships, and we have enhanced our fans’ game-day and ongoing experience." (link)
Virginia AD Williams recruits another senior leader from Georgia to join her in Charlottesville as Bulldogs Deputy AD for Academics White exits to become Deputy AD for the Cavs. Williams: "He has over 20 years of collegiate athletics experience, and is highly regarded nationally for his work with student-athletes, coaches, athletics staff and university administrators. I am excited about the leadership and expertise he will bring to UVa as we begin to develop and implement a world-class student development program." Start date: September 4. (link); More Deputy AD news as Penn State boss Barbour promotes Senior Assoc. AD for Administration Holleran to the Deputy line. (link)
U.S. District Court Judge Martinez dismisses the lawsuit brought against Colorado AD George, FB HC McIntyre, Chancellor DiStefano & Prez Benson by a woman who alleges former FB DC Tumpkin was domestically abusive. Martinez: "Defendants' alleged failure to follow the university's rules and policies did not increase the risk of harm to (Fine) given that, as someone with no affiliation with or connection to the university, she was not within the group of individuals that the policies were designed to protect. [...] Tumpkin could have engaged in the exact same conduct regardless of his affiliation with the university... The university and (defendants) provided neither access nor cover for Tumpkin's alleged conduct." (link)
ACC Media Days:
+ More from Commish Swofford, including having no plans to retire anytime soon, "The energy comes from just enjoying what I do ... Those of us who get to do what we love professionally, we’re really lucky." Swofford also "thinks & hopes" MBB's one-and-done rule will be a thing of the past here in the near future, even though it may not solve all the sport's issues. On eSports: "Do we want to really dip our toe into that? The question there as much as anything is, does that really fit intercollegiate athletics? I think the answer is probably no, but being involved in sponsoring some e-sports events that are tied to our championships, for instance, could turn into revenues for our schools." A bit more. (link, link)
+ So it was North Carolina FB student-athletes selling team shoes that resulted in the secondary violations. Tar Heels AD Cunningham: "There were a number of students. Off the top of my head I don’t have it right in front of me, but all the penalties will be determined within the next couple of weeks." (link)
+ Yahoo's Adelson comes to the defense of UNC HC Fedora's CTE comments on Wednesday. Boston U. neuropathologist Cummings: "Association is not causation. CTE has also been found in individuals not exposed to contact sports. It’s not a settled matter by any means. And football is safer today than it has ever been. In fact, I would argue that no other sport has made a more radical transformation in response to safety concerns than football. His comments reflect the reality of the scientific uncertainty surrounding CTE." More. (link)
+ What Louisville HC Petrino said to his team about the Papa John's saga, "Hey guys, let’s just chill out a little bit. I don’t want the story to be about you guys and how you react to it, what you put out there on social media. If you could do me a favor, speak to the team." (link); The Cards' media guide featured Triple Crown-winner Justified. Louisville Courier Journal's Lourim with the backstory on how the inclusion came to be. (link)
SEC Media Days:
+ Count Auburn HC Malzahn as another voice within the league who is in favor of nine conference games annually. Auburn Undercover's Marcello thinks the real reason behind Malzahn's reversal on the topic may be, "A nine-game schedule could potentially alleviate the pressure on Auburn and Georgia late in the season -- and potentially change the schedule to the traditional home-and-away rotation with their two major rivals in a single season." (link, link)
+ South Carolina's Muschamp when asked about the comments made by North Carolina boss Fedora, "I don't think our game's under attack. I don't know a whole lot about Larry's comments. As far as CTE and concussion... I feel very comfortable with the policies and procedures we have in place at University of South Carolina." (link)
+ Dallas could be an option for SEC Media Days in 2020. (link)
USA Today's Berkowitz keeps us updated on the Alston case, "Lawyers in Alston case challenging NCAA compensation limits say after hearing that Judge Claudia Wilken will limit trial testimony related to UNC infractions. Extensive testimony about UNC academic case potentially would be problematic to part of NCAA’s case that compensation limits help with academic integration of athletes." Also, from Law360: "A California federal judge on Thursday laid the ground rules for a Sept. 9 bench trial over allegations the NCAA illegally prevents athletes from being paid beyond their scholarships, requiring the parties to cut down over 2,000 exhibits, restricting layman witnesses and setting time limits on arguments. During a hearing in Oakland, California, U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken told attorneys for college athletes and the National Collegiate Athletic Association to cut down their exhibits, which include videos, rule books, financial statements of universities, NBC and CBS..." More behind the wall. (link, link)
Former Missouri tutor Kumar has not followed through on her threats to release the names of those involved in the academic saga. Kumar said earlier in the week she would go public on Twitter at 6:39p on Wednesday. More context, "It was unclear Wednesday night why Kumar did not follow through on her plan. On Tuesday, Kumar agreed to speak with the Missourian the following day to discuss the release. However, on Wednesday, she did not respond to messages before or after the scheduled release time." (link)

Check out the new Airbus A220 that Delta will put to work this winter. "The plane was exceedingly quiet, enough to hear a neighbor’s furtive movements. Economy seats, arranged two on one side of the aisle, three on the other, were among the widest I’ve experienced on a short-haul plane." (link); And, if you hit the lotto, or have a well-heeled donor who splurges, here's the new Gulfstream G600 private plane. Price tag: $58M. As you might expect, the interior is stupid nice. 7,500-mile range. (link)

VCU releases a new five-year strategic plan, "Rising Higher." Looks like Collegiate Consulting assisted on the project. Vision includes being a premier DI athletic department via a commitment to 1) Achievement at an elite level nationally; 2) A first-class education and experience for student-athletes; and, 3) Community engagement. New Cal AD Knowlton's latest to the Golden Bears fanbase, in part, "To date, I've met with nearly 40 different teams and department units through my Listening Days. I've had the opportunity to meet with alumni from coast to coast, including in New York, Washington, D.C., Southern California, Lake Tahoe and throughout the Bay Area, and tomorrow I'm meeting with another group at an event in Menlo Park. Much of my time has been spent visiting, seeing, listening and learning what it takes to make us exceptional in our support of student-athletes and their Cal experience – and I'm excited! […] Within the fundraising realm, we have a lot to celebrate overall. Although we are still waiting on final data for the fiscal year that closed June 30, our numbers are pointing to the highest total in five years with nearly $30 million in contributions." (link)
Count Southern Miss MBB HC Sadler as someone who doesn't think Conference USA's new scheduling framework is the best way forward. Sadler says he's old school & wonders why the new format isn't used by more leagues, also mentions the Golden Eagles fanbase doesn't really know or care about the likes of FAU or FIU. More constructively, "You may have an easy part of the (conference schedule) to begin. In our situation, you might be 7-2, but guess what? You’ve still got to play Marshall and Western Kentucky. You may go through an easy 14 at the beginning, but it may be hard. That’s why you play 18 games. At the end of that, you have champions. That’s not the way it’s going to be. You may have nine home games in conference or you may have 10. That’s not fair either." (link)
Dallas SportsDay's Cowlishaw wonders why Dallas is missing out on Final Fours, Super Bowls & other major sporting events. Also points to the College Football Playoff not hosting a National Championship game in the market "until at least 2025." Cowlishaw: "I've heard suggestions that the Arlington location hurts the stadium, and I can't say for sure that it doesn't, although no one is walking to their hotels or much of anything beyond a look at the Astrodome when they leave NRG Stadium in Houston. If Dallas had built a downtown stadium and team hotels were closer to the event, perhaps things would be different. But why even venture down that road? It didn't happen. It didn't come close to happening. Move on." (link)
Deals: Georgia Tech & Paciolan extend their 34-year relationship. Tech Asst. AD for Sales & Ticket Operations Castle: "Paciolan’s understanding of college athletics has enabled us to increase our sophistication with how we interact with our fans and grow those relationships. Through Marketing Automation and Salesforce CRM, we have customized the way in which we talk to fans." (link); Northeastern links up with Aspire for ticket sales, marketing & service. "What Not to Do When You’re Trying to Motivate Your Team," per best-selling author & consultant Carucci: 1) Drive-by praise; 2) Making stuff up; 3) Guilt gratitude ("It’s incredibly awkward when a manager who feels guilty tries to overcompensate with effusive expressions of appreciation."); 4) Ask for the story (“That was amazing. How did you do it?”); 5) Contextualize gratitude; and, 6) Acknowledge the cost ("No substantial contribution comes without personal cost to the one making it."). More. (link)

Former Missouri AD Alden has been doing a bit of consulting since retiring from 'the chair,' but he's also been busy expanding his service impact in Vietnam, a country he first visited 10 years ago as part of a Nike trip. Alden's wife, Rockie, notes her husband's interest in Vietnam is so different than being AD for the Tigers that "it seems almost like a pipe dream." Alden is a core member of Mizzou's Vietnam Institute & university leaders note the quickness with which the program has accelerated with Alden pushing. Alden: "It’s changed me. I look at things in a different way. I have much more of an appreciation for the value of things — value being not material things but relationships." More. (link)
In this edition of "Ask the AD," Kansas State boss Taylor dives into the upcoming strategic plan, balancing budgets, the current state of the Big 12 and the Wildcats relationship with Sporting KC. On the league: "I will tell you, everybody in the room, everybody on the phone – it's about making the conference better. Every decision we've made recently, it's not about one school or the other, and it continues to get reinforced. It was reinforced in some one-on-one conversations, we've got some new ADs. It just makes you feel pretty good about where the conference is as a group." Wants to play a Women's Soccer game in Kansas City, potentially at Children's Mercy Park, which already serves as home to the Big12 Tourney. Football season ticket sales are behind pace from last year. Look for both a facilities master plan and a strategic plan for operations to be released in the coming weeks. (link)
The NCAA announces plans to form an internal working group to wrap the governing body's collective mind around the growing sports gambling landscape. Chief Legal Officer Remy: "...we must evolve and expand our long-standing efforts to protect both the integrity of competitions and the well-being of student-athletes." No word on exactly who will be a part of the group, other than "subject matter experts from across the national office." (link); Marshall AD Hamrick still points to an integrity fee in his home state to help with the cost of oversight with sports gambling now legal, "The fee would help us with additional resources for us to do what we need to do to deal with this whole process." (link)
Clemson pays $45K annually for a subscription to software that helps the Tigers compliance office log and monitor recruiting activity done on coaches phones. Assoc. AD for Compliance Charles: "This is the beauty of the age we’re in. Their phone locks the activity once it occurs. They have to then provide an explanation. They can't erase it. That's a key piece to the monitoring efforts. It requires communication." (link); 'Joseph Rodriguez' has been posing as a Michigan Softball recruiter to HS prospects and the school issued a Twitter statement clarifying that he is in no way associated with the Wolverines program. HC Hutchins: "I can tell you this, recruiting is a big business from the other side. My business is to bring great student-athletes to the University of Michigan. There’s a lot of people out there trying to make money on it. There’s a lot of money to be made. Again, I just try to make sure we go by the letter of the law and have integrity. I can’t ensure everybody else has integrity, but they can’t misrepresent the University of Michigan. Anytime we think that’s happening, we’re going to do our best to curtail it." (link)
In 2014, Miami (FL) expelled two Football student-athletes who were arrested for allegedly raping a 17-year-old soccer student-athlete. The duo admitted to the assault and then-Prez Shalala indicated that in her conversations with the victim she "reassured her of our full support." Last month the victim filed a lawsuit against the school for negligence, claiming UM failed to provide adequate counseling or assistance after the assailants arrests. More details here, including other cases at the school around the same time period that led to the termination of a professor and the Title IX sexual-misconduct investigator. (link)
Also Noticed: Clemson set another fundraising record as IPTAY brought in $156.6M, including $95.9M in cash, pledges & gifts-in-kind, $16M in planned gifts and $44.7M from the annual fund. More than 25K alumni supported the school, ranking CU fourth in the nation in alumni-giving participation rate (23.7%). (link); Duke MBB will have an All-Access show and all games will be streamed on ESPN+ when the Blue Devils travel to Canada for their foreign tour. (link); "A month after voting to remove 3-on-3 overtimes and shootouts from the rule book to produce a single overtime format for all conferences, the NCAA Men's and Women's Ice Hockey Rules Committee on Wednesday changed course. Conferences again will be allowed to use 3-on-3 play and/or shootouts for the purpose of awarding extra standings points in tie games if neither team scores in a five-minute, 5-on-5 session. The option now applies only to league games, however." (link); Suspended USC FB student-athlete arrested again on domestic violence charges, second time since February.
