The ADRDL construction project continues to advance. The picture above, taken July 20, shows that most of the steel frame of the diagnostic lab portion (referred to as "Area C" by construction managers) of the project is complete. The portion of the framing on the left-hand side of the structure is the location of the new necropsy lab. Next to follow will be erection of the frame for "Area B," which will connect the new diagnostic lab structure to the existing building. This area will contain most of the office space for faculty and staff, and represents the public portion of the building.
Behind (north of) the diagnostic lab structure, the new animal barn is nearing completion and should be ready for move-in within weeks. If you have any questions about the construction project, call the lab at 605-688-5171 or email us.
North Campus Drive Road Closure August-December:
Alternate Traffic Routes to ADRDL
Beginning on August 20, the stretch of North Campus Drive from Medary Ave. east to the ADRDL will be closed to traffic in order to facilitate a major utility project. This closure will last until December, 2018. The project has also resulted in the permanent closure of the parking lot between the Animal Science building and the ADRDL/Vet Science building.
Access to the ADRDL remains in place via a detour on North Campus Drive (red line on map). The detour can be accessed off the Highway 14 bypass via Stadium Drive or Jackrabbit Avenue.
Also note that through the end of July, a section of North Campus Drive to the east of the ADRDL is closed for a separate utility project through the end of July (yellow circle on map). The ADRDL can still be accessed from the west (until Aug. 20), or from the north by taking Stadium Drive and following the detour signs.

The core group of Veterinary Science Summer Scholars presenting their experiences at the end of their week
High School Students Learn about Veterinary Science at Summer Scholars Program
Once again this July, SDSU Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences hosted a group of high-achieving high school students for the Summer Scholars Program through SDSU's Van and Barbara Fishback Honors College. Sixteen students, with a particular interest in veterinary and biomedical science, spent the week with VBSD faculty members who led the students in a variety of interactive activities.
VBSD faculty members Alan Young,David Knudsen, and Chris Chase, along with many different ADRDL staff members, worked with the students through the week. Dr. Rosie Nold from SDSU's Animal Science Department arranged tours of SDSU's animal units. Besides the tours, students performed diagnostic test procedures, participated in a disease outbreak scenario, and spent time on the necropsy floor looking at pathology cases. In addition, students learned about careers in veterinary medicine and biological sciences.

KDLT news featured a story on anthrax and the ADRDL's role in quick diagnosis on their July 6 newscast. As of July 23, five different herds in three South Dakota counties have been diagnosed with the deadly disease. VSPS (Veterinary Services Process Streamlining) is a federal system used by accredited veterinarians, veterinary technicians, importers, lab employees, state employees, and federal employees to manage Veterinary Services processes.

Pieces and Parts
The SDSU College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences has a new name! The college became the "College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences" effective this July. The new name reflects the realignment of some departments into different SDSU colleges. Besides the Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Department, others contained in the college are the departments of Agricultural & Biosystems Engineering; Agronomy, Horticulture & Plant Science; Animal Science; Dairy & Food Science; Economics; and Natural Resource Management. The Biology/Microbiology department has moved into a new "College of Natural Sciences."
Dr. Russ Daly spoke at the Annual Meeting of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association in Vancouver, BC, on July 6. Topics included Diagnosing Infectious Reproductive Losses in Beef Cattle; Reproductive Vaccines in Beef Cattle: Current Concepts; and Pre-Weaning Respiratory Disease in Beef Cattle.
Dr. Chris Chase attended the annual meeting of the American Veterinary Medical Association July 11-14. While there he served as SDVMA's delegate and presented a talk on "Gut Immunity" at the meeting of the American Association of Avian Pathologists.
Drs. Maureen Fernandes and Diego Diel attended the American Society of Virology meeting in College Park MD, July 13-18. Dr. Fernandes spoke on "Senecavirus A induces apoptosis late in infection."
Dr. Joy Scaria is traveling through India July 15-August 7, where he is collaborating on research projects and giving presentations at the University of Delhi. He is also presenting scientific information during talks at Tamil Nadu University, Animal Sciences University at Chennai, and Gandhigram Deemed University.
The ADRDL Advisory Committee met at the ADRDL on July 23, where they received updates on and toured the new building site, among discussing many other items of interest.
