Global Engineering Congress - GEC
Gathering the profession to determine how to make the UN Sustainable Development Goals a reality

WFEO and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) will organize the Global Engineering Congress (GEC2018) on UN Sustainable Development Goals. It will take place between 22 and 26 October 2018 in London, in parallel with the 50th anniversary of WFEO, ICE's bicentenary year, and UK Government’s Year of Engineering.

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers (CSCE), the European Council of Civil Engineers (ECCE) and the Commonwealth Engineers Council (CEC) are also partners of this event, and took part in the creation of the programme.

At this event, engineers from all over the world will gather to demonstrate how engineers can better the lives of the billions of people around the world who still face a myriad of challenges including water poverty, slum accommodation, and poor health.

The five day program will tackle the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goals 6 - water and sanitation - , 7 - energy - , 9 - infrastructure industrialization - , 11 - sustainable cities - and 13 - climate change - which have been identified as areas engineers can make the most impact. The aim is to create a united, global engineering response to the goals with details of how engineers can deliver them.

Outcomes of the congress will be:
  • Integrating climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning;
  • Safeguarding sustainability through appropriate financing;
  • Infrastructure as the backbone of the economy – increased productivity;
  • Realizing the potential digitally enabled innovation has to offer for sustainability;
  • Changing industry's approach by suggesting key steps to make sustainability a reality.

Registration for this event is mandatory for all categories of attendants, in order for them to be able to get security clearance and access the ICE building.

For the GEC Conference (Monday 22-Friday 27), participants (except WFEO Executive Council members) shall register here

For WFEO committees meetings (Saturday 20 and Sunday 21) and Executive Council meeting (Wednesday 24), all participants should register through this Eventbrite link, and specify which day they will attend.

 "Blaze: Working Women, Public Leaders" exhibition
The "Blaze: Working Women, Public Leaders" exhibition

The "Blaze: Working Women, Public Leaders" exhibition produced by the Australian New South Wales (NSW) Government State archives, showcases the careers of women in diverse fields that are or have been leaders in the NSW Public Sector, from the 1860s to the present.

They were the first women to hold positions that had been traditionally occupied by men. These ‘past’ Blaze women led the way for others to follow and they re-shaped the institutions of the State from within.

Turning to the present, Blaze engages with the stories of fourteen women who currently hold senior positions in NSW government agencies, departments, boards and/or related initiatives. Each of these ‘present’ women have reflected on their careers, and in doing so, provided unique insights into their formative, professional and leadership experiences.

WFEO President Dr. Marlene Kanga features as the only engineer among the fourteen women and talks about education and leadership in the video below.

 Cyber Security – an emerging risk from the convergence of IT and IoT

Cyber risk is a growing risk with the advancement of new information technologies and the connections between billions of devices in every sector from electricity generation, health, banking and financial systems to carious personal devices and smart phones.

This TV broadcast features a hypothetical scenario and explores what happens if hackers gain control of the power grid? Or a hospital can't access patient records? Hackers can launch a large scale strategic attack within minutes. This question was posed to a panel of experts in Australia and broadcast on national Australian television on 24 June 2018.

WFEO President Dr. Marlene Kanga was casted as the CEO of a hypothetical power company “Global Lights On Power” that has an attack on its substations preventing the distribution of electricity to the city of Melbourne.

Various Australian government officials in emergency management and cyber risk management, play themselves, in responding to this event which creates an extreme emergency and disruption in the city. The broadcast was not scripted and the participants responded to each threat as it emerged and was presented live.

This episode shows the major role that engineers have to play in managing the emerging risks from new technologies, to enable sustainable development, and it is in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No. 9 on "Industry, innovation and infrastructure".

Also the hypothetical is now both on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation website https://asialink.unimelb.edu.au/homeand the Asialink site, the co-sponsor of this event.
