Commodore's Comment

Hello All
Not much to report this month, with winter keeping outdoor activities at bay.
Preparation for the General Meeting has been completed and I encourage you all to come along and provide your feedback. There are decisions that need to be made and it is important that we hear from the members what they would like to see the committee do.
The end of July is the end of the club's financial year, so the office will be busy completing the multitude of tasks that involves, including sending our invoices for your subscriptions. Please remember that you must have paid your subs to be able to vote at the AGM and to be elected onto the commitee.
Plans are already underway for the AGM and opening day.  We have managed to secure Alex Hare, who sailed on the first two legs of the Clipper Round the World race on Unicef to speak. Further details to come.
Please support our events and make use of the suggestions box and or let us know your thoughts/suggestions by sending an email to the office at office@manacc.co.nz or myself at commodore@manacc.co.nz.
Stay warm and safe boating.

Mike Quayle

Mana Island Update

Kia ora koutou
It’s now been almost five months since myself (Nick), Gen and our young son Theo took up our post as Mana Island rangers, after five and a half years up the road on Kapiti Island. It’s been a busy time getting settled onto Mana and learning the ropes of a new motu. We are very lucky to be able to call the island home for the next wee while.
As well as finding our feet there have been a few big pieces of work happening on the island:
In mid-May a large helicopter operation took place on the island, delivering a wide range of supplies including furniture, curtains, blinds and kitchenware for the houses, new picnic tables, 300kg of concrete for the new direction signage and a replacement BBQ for the Lockwood. On the back run of these flights we were able to remove 31 helicopter fadge bags of rubbish, which will hopefully be the first of many rubbish removal trips! This included 10 fadges of planting tubes that were diverted from landfill and will be used in conversation projects on the mainland.
Five juvenile takahē were transferred off the island down to the Burwood takahē center in Te Anau in early June. These birds will be fostered with adult pairs at Burwood who will teach them how to feed on tussock before they are released – likely into the Murchison Mountains or Kahurangi National Park. This transfer was delayed several times due to weather so a massive thanks to Ngati Toa, FOMI and Dave Rogan (volunteer from Fulton Hogan who sponsor takahē recovery) for their patience.
Recently a group of 16 rangatahi visited the island as part of Kaitiaki o Te Taiao – a marae based environmental education programme run by Ngati Toa Rangatira. As part of their overnight visit, the group were hardy enough to go for a snorkel (and had to be dragged out of the water!), then went through lessons on rongoa (traditional Maori medicine), plant identification, and biosecurity. The passion these young people had for learning was infectious, and hopefully there is a future island ranger or two in the group...
It has been a quiet time for visitors during the winter so far, just the hardy kayaker or sail boat popping over on a calm day. Looking forward to the more settled weather months where we’ll get to meet some more of the local boating community!
Nga mihi
Nick, Gen and Theo

Behind the Bar

Just in case you hadn't noticed we have 2 new bar staff.  We would like to introduce them;

Laura-Lee has relocated from Mangonui where she worked in the world famous Mangonui Kitchen and Bar. She has also set up Coopers Beach four square and worked as a duty manager and grocery/liquor buyer. Laura-Lee set up Panmure Four Square as a grocery manager and worked as 2IC at Pac'n'Save.
Unfortunately she had a brain aneurysm that ruptured causing a Stroke and so she was unable to work full time.  Laura-Lee has relocated to this area and we are lucky enough to have her as one of the part time bar duty managers.

Kirsten was raised in Titahi Bay and continues to reside in the area. She has a fiance and 2 children.  Kirsten has worked in hospitality for 10 years and been a venue manager for 6 of those years. She is currently studying nursing and enjoying life.

Please introduce yourselves to our new staff and make them feel welcome!  I am sure they will soon learn everyone's favourite tipple!

Welcome Laura-Lee and Kirsten.

Helena has arranged with WAG & Co wines for us to try some different ones on the 12th August from 4pm.  This coincides with a buffet night at the club. WAG &Co have Astrolabe and Durvillea brands to offer us.

Committee Corner

Each month we will highlight the issues/significant decisions made by the committee at that month’s meeting. The first Thursday of the month club night will have an “open mike” session where members can ask the commodore/committee any questions arising from these items.
Issues from the July meeting:
  • Finances – continue on a positive basis.
  • Regular Membership Subs to be increased by $5-00 - other subs are calculated as a percentage of regular subs
  • Water meters are to be installed to measure actual usage by club building and travel lift/boat ramp
  • Kitchen requires renovation to maintain its health certificate. Will look for quotes for a total refurbishment
  • Vessels register to be prepared and put up at the bar (this is now in place)
  • Speaker for Opening Day will be Alex Hare, who sailed on the first two legs of the Clipper Round the World race on Unicef
  • Due to lack of use and ongoing costs to maintain the Courtesy Coach, the decision was made to cease the service and sell the van
Please bring your questions for the committee to the next Thursday Club night 2nd August. Alternatively you can contact the committee members via the email addresses below;
commodore@manacc.co.nz (Mike) for general ideas and feedback.
secretary@manacc.co.nz for general business and to ask questions to be put to the committee at meetings.
allan@manacc.co.nz (Allan) - Rear Commodore, Yard for queries/information about the yard area.

Coastguard Update

COASTGUARD MANA

With winter having well and truly arrived it has been a quiet time on the water for Coastguard Mana with only one call out over the last month to assist a launch with engine trouble in the harbour.
During this time we have been concentrating on getting new crew through their MOSS Induction modules and getting senior crew time on the water with practical training.  We have also supported the Plimmerton  mid winter swim and the club bird man competition.
A lot of time and energy has been spent fixing bilge pump issues on MR1 and we now have both vessels operational for the upcoming spring season when historically there has been an upsurge in call outs for assistance.  Now is a great time to get vessels serviced and ready for the better weather ahead.
The scoping of our project to replace the main rescue vessels in both Wellington and Mana has now been completed and we expect shortly to be in a position to launch the very significant fund raising needed to have fit for purpose rescue capability right across our region.  We will keep members updated as this proceeds.
Just a reminder that we are a volunteer organisation and rely on grants and support from the public to fund our unit. To support Coastguard Mana it costs only $115.00 per year and will ensure that if you need help we will be there for you.  You can join on line by going to the Coastguard NZ website, clicking on “membership” and filling in the application. Just remember to pick Mana as your unit. Membership of the Mana Membership will give you the benefits of membership right across the country where ever you may be boating at the time.

NEWSFLASH:  Auckland boatie ordered to pay $17,500 after running over diver in water.
An inexperienced Auckland boatie who ran over a diver in the water has been ordered to pay $17,500 in reparation after the diver suffered serious injuries including a cut to the head that needed eight staples.
Carl Allan Whiteman pleaded guilty to one charge under the Maritime Transport Act of causing unnecessary danger or risk to any other person and was sentenced in the North Shore District Court.
The diver was spear fishing with an orange buoy and blue and white dive flag between Ti Point and Omaha on February 5, 2017, when he was hit by Whiteman's 3.5m inflatable powerboat.  It was Whiteman's third or fourth time taking the boat out on the water. Whiteman and three passengers left the Omaha boat ramp in his 3.5 metre inflatable powerboat. He said he saw the orange buoy but did not "register" the dive flag on the buoy. He assumed the buoy marked a crayfish pot and did not alter course or slow down.
If the diver had been hit at a slightly different angle, this could easily have been a fatal accident, Maritime NZ Northern regional manager Neil Rowarth said,
Whiteman turned his boat around to help the diver, and one of his three passengers called the police. They took the diver to Ti Point wharf where they were met by Police and an ambulance."I urge every new skipper to get training and help from a boat club or Coastguard Boating Education. It's not hard, it's not expensive and you get to meet boaties and have some fun learning.
"What you learn makes you, your family and friends, and others in the water safer – and if you see a dive flag, slow down."

Birdman photo highlights

 Midwinter, 6 brave souls;

They climbed the scaffold;

The 2 convicts were closely followed by our laughing policeman - he was not laughing so much when he resurfaced!

We were then treated to the sight of a flying unicorn... he did his best to fly away....

And the Flying Bandito did well to hang on to his hat...

This year Menno very sensibly wore his wet suit, a hat.., and a set of brightly coloured wings..

Photo credits and many thanks to Judy Tilley, Robyn Deverall, Janet Morris and Greg Kavarnos for sending in the pictures.
