Meet the Spring 2018
Global Health Travel Award Winners


This past spring, over 20 McGill Faculty of Medicine students, residents and McGill University Health Centre workers received travel awards through McGill Global Health Programs thanks to the generosity of our donors.  Many are currently on-site working at their clinical placement or on their research project and all will be formally honored this fall during Global Health Night. The next round of applications will open on September 4, 2018.

A message regarding the Steinberg Fund for Interdisciplinary Global Health Research


Global Health Programs will postpone the announcement for the next Steinberg Fund for Interdisciplinary Global Health Research seed grant competition. The competition launch was set for May 2018, but due to unforeseen circumstances the delay is necessary for this round of funding. If and when the next round is planned we will let the McGill global health research community know well in advance.

Work at the McGill Interdisciplinary Initiative in Infection and Immunity!


The new McGill Interdisciplinary Initiative in Infection and Immunity, also known at Mi4, is looking for a Program Manager and an Administrative Coordinator.

Mi4 brings together researchers and trainees from across McGill sites to develop innovative solutions for infectious and immune diseases. Its mandate is to support interdisciplinary, translational approaches to complex challenges in infection and immunity. At McGill, the Initiative provides support for research platforms and facilities, interdisciplinary training programs, communication and outreach, as well as coordination of large-scale grant opportunities and philanthropic support.

Postdoctoral fellowship in health law

The McGill Research Group on Health and Law is seeking a postdoctoral fellow for a one-year period with a start date during the 2018-2019 Academic Year. They are seeking candidates who have completed doctoral studies in law with a focus on law and health, or law degree followed by doctoral studies in health law, health policy, or a related discipline. We are seeking someone who is fluent in English and proficient in French. An interdisciplinary background and grant writing experience is an asset.

Postdoc opportunities in infectious diseases research


Two one-year postdoctoral fellowships starting in the 2018-2019 academic year are seeking applications. Both positions are under the supervision of Dr. Christina Greenaway, MD, MSc at the Center for Clinical Epidemiology, at the Lady Davis Institute.  One fellow will work on Hepatitis C with co-supervisor Dr. Marina Klein, MD, MSc at the MUHC RI. The other will work on Tuberculosis with co-supervisor Dr. Kevin Schwartzman, MD, MPH, at the McGill International TB Centre.

Call for student papers

The Centre for Research on Gender, Health and Medicine, and the Institute for Gender, Sexuality and Feminist Studies at McGill University invite undergraduate and graduate student paper proposals for participation in a two-day symposium titled, “Abortion Beyond Bounds: Self-Management and the Circulations of Knowledge, Technology and Care." 
Students whose work addresses questions of abortion politics and care, self-managed abortions, and/or the changing landscape of abortion law and provisions are encouraged to submit proposals for a 15 minute conference presentation. Small travel stipends and assistance with local housing may be available to out of town presenters.

New funding for sexual & reproductive health and rights
from Grand Challenges Canada


Grand Challenges Canada - Stars in Global Health initiative has launched a new funding opportunity open to applicants in low- and middle-income countries and Canada. Stars in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights seeks new and bold ideas that will have a big impact to create products, services and implementation models that could transform how persistent challenges in sexual and reproductive health and rights are addressed.
Successful proposals will be awarded seed grants of up to CAD$100,000 for up to 12 months.

McGill International TB Centre Researcher Dick Menzies and international collaborators recently published two papers on his research in relation to shorter, safer, and more effective treatment of latent tuberculosis in both children and adults in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Congratulations to 2016 Norman Bethune Award recipient Ran van der Wal for winning one of the latest Vanier Scholarships, one of Canada’s most prestigious graduate awards!
2016 Mary A. Metcalf International Travel Fund recipient and Family Medicine PhD student David Loutfi was at  the 2018 AIDS Conference in Amsterdam in July.  David was there to present his work on using social networks of young women in Botswana to spread information about available support to young women more effectively to enable them to make protective choices and so reduce HIV.

McGill University Faculty members working in global health are being honored by the Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Argerie Tsimicalis, and Dr. Sherif Emil  have been named as the 2018 recipients of the Rosemary Wedderburn Brown Prize, the Haile T. Debas Prize respectively.
AIDS-Free World has released a new documentary comparing the impacts of policies regarding access to new and better life-saving drugs against Multi-drug resistant (MDR) tuberculosis in India and South Africa.  The film features McGill Global Health Programs Director Dr. Madhu Pai, and Summer Institute faculty members Jennifer Furin and Nandita Venkatesan.

McGill GHP invites donations from the greater McGill community in honour of two outstanding women who have made a significant impact at McGill and in the Global Health field:

The Dr. Alice Benjamin Global Maternal and Child Health Fund  was established to thank maternal-fetal medicine specialist Dr. Alice Benjamin for her extraordinary work by raising $1 million to support maternal and child health worldwide. Since its launch in May, over $200,000 have been raised.

You can also support the Dr. Freda M. Omaswa Travel Award for the Study of Infectious and Tropical Diseases established in memory of McGill MDCM alumna Dr. Freda Omaswa who dedicated her life to the attainment of empowered healthy populations in Uganda, Africa and the world. The fundraising campaign is very close to its $70,000 goal!

Academics Without Borders is looking for cancer specialists for a Tanzania project

Academics Without Borders (AWB), is a Canadian bilingual nonprofit organization based in Montreal whose mission is to support academic institutions in developing countries in building capacity in higher education so that they can train their own experts and conduct research to assist in their development. 

AWB is looking for a Breast Surgeon & a Gynecologic Oncologist to help build capacity for the management of advanced breast and cervix cancers in Tanzania for a period of 3-4 weeks in Winter 2018/Spring 2019.
AWB reimburses volunteers for their expenses but does not offer them a salary.
