Growing Produce for the Pantry

St Paul's Community Garden was planted over 20 years ago and has been growing ever since. All the fresh produce from this garden (hundreds of pounds of vegetables) is donated to the Johnston Partnership’s Food Pantry. The garden is located next to the parking lot of St. Paul Presbyterian Church - 6426 Merle Hay Road.

Individual and group volunteers are welcome and needed throughout the growing season. Every Wednesday 90-minute slots are available. Sign-up at: https://signup.com/client/invitation2/secure/2317390/false#/invitation

Many thanks to the Lego Building Group from the Johnston Community School District for helping in the garden.
They told us “If you haven't pitched in, you really should! It's a lot of fun and very rewarding!"

Books at the Partnership

Summer time is here...what better time to catch up on your reading! Each Saturday this summer, the Johnston Public Library is set up outside Partnership Place to find you (or your kiddos!) the perfect book. A special thanks to Molly for serving this week. :)

WE ASKED, You Gave.

What a difference a week makes!! At the end of May our personal item shelves were very low.  A Facebook post was picked up by Channel 13 and within a week the shelves were full again.  Your generosity is appreciated by each client that we have served this week. We’ve had over 2,000 items donated in a little over a week.

BUT the needs list stays the same each month of the year! Our shelves are low again, keep the donations coming!

Volunteer Highlight

Rich Safris, Johnston

“I volunteer to remind myself how fortunate I am”. Rich works in the food pantry on Tuesday mornings from October through spring.  He says he enjoys working with the other volunteers who are friendly and helpful.  Rich finds that people are the most disappointed when we don’t have milk, eggs, or toilet paper on hand.  Once, he recalled, when there was no milk, one women said, “Well, maybe I can find enough change in the glovebox to buy some.”

In the summer he and his wife of 50 years spend time at their cabin in Minnesota or with family including 3 children and 8 grandchildren. Rich is retired after a 40-year career as a teacher in Johnston, Urbandale and Des Moines.

His other volunteer jobs are as Head Judge for Odyssey of the Mind and Academic Decathlon. His hobby is carving gourds which he orders from California and Arizona.  He gives the gourds as gifts to non-profit organizations to sell at silent auctions.
Thank you Rich, for all of your volunteering efforts!
