On July 14, 2008, Egan Maritime trustees, supporters, and friends gathered at 158 Polpis Road for the reopening of the Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum following a $3-million capital campaign to renovate, expand, and reinterpret the former Nantucket Lifesaving Museum. The campaign ensured Nantucket's lifesaving stories and memorabilia would be preserved and shared with the island in perpetuity.
Inspiring the Future
Egan Maritime premieres new Sea of Opportunities short film.

There is a new film in the Gund Program Gallery at the Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum: the Sea of Opportunities short. Charged with telling the story of Egan Maritime's Student Mariners (island youth who have participated in overnight or week-long Tall Ship sails), this compelling eight minute piece combines interviews with students, leaders, and crew members to illustrate the compelling and life changing experiences Student Mariners have. This film allowed Student Mariners to share their voice and their story with Egan's leaders and patrons who so generously make these sails possible.

Of most importance, this short film is a vital way for you, our members and friends, to understand the scope and importance of your participation with Egan Maritime. Thank you for coming aboard and joining the adventure. Without you, Sea of Opportunities would not have been possible. A very special thanks to Ritchie, Katie and Westray Battle who so generously supported the production of the film.

To watch the new Sea of Opportunities short you may click here, click the above image, or visit the Museum.

Stories from Island Shores
The wreck of the Asia, February 1898.

On February 20, 1898, the ship Asia was making her way from Manila to Boston with a cargo of hemp when she struck Round Shoal and became stranded.  Breaking apart completely the following day, the 23 members of the crew, including the Captain and his family, clung to pieces of the wreckage. A tug from Woods Hole picked up two of the survivors; the First Mate, the Captain’s daughter, and three seamen were rescued by the Lightship at Handkerchief Shoal, but the fate of the rest of the crew was never known.
