Our survey on the state of digitization in public libraries is open for one more week!

Our survey on the state of digitization activities in Ontario public libraries is live!

If you’re a staff member of one of the 300+ public or First Nation libraries in Ontario, we invite you to complete the following survey. Your library should already have received an email from SOLS or OLS-N – we’re looking for one response per library, so make sure you coordinate with your coworkers to answer the questions about special collections and archives, and about digitization and technology.

You can find the survey here, as well as a link to a copy of the questions in case you need to draft your answers in advance. Please get in touch if you have suggestions or need any help!

Funding opportunity from the Virtual Museum of Canada

The Virtual Museum of Canada has opened up applications to their Virtual Exhibits funding program, where heritage organizations can apply for up to $250,000 to do digital history projects.

Institutions can “develop online products that engage audiences of all ages, interests and abilities” – “a new virtual exhibit, virtual tour, interactive resource or educational resource on the subject of their choice.” Projects should be “a dynamic exploration of Canada’s diverse history, heritage or culture in ways that appeal to a broad spectrum of Canadians.”

Funding will cover every step of exhibit development: research, identification of relevant media, digitization of that media, copyright and permissions, writing and editing texts, promotion, and hosting. This is a great opportunity to digitize and present that small collection you wish could reach a wider audience!

We'd love to be part of your virtual exhibit solution. Our VITA Digital Toolkit comes with an Exhibits module that's flexible and customizable, and it's bilingual too! Send us a message if you'd like a tour of the tool or have questions about how we can work together.

Tell Us How You Teach With Primary Sources

The second stage of our Multicultural Community Capacity project is helping Ontario public educators teach with primary sources about underrepresented populations. Building on our three new virtual exhibits featuring black historyJapanese history, and women’s history in Ontario, we're looking to talk to teachers, teacher-librarians, and librarians who bring historical materials into the classroom. Is this you? Get in touch!
