Recently I feel as though I have lost my way when it comes to many things, one of them being my health and wellbeing.
I've fallen off the wagon for want of a better (and less cliche) saying.
As a result I've been thinking a lot about how to get back into the swing of things, how to break bad habits and nourish myself inside and out. There are many ways to start a fresh and you don'y need to wait for a new week, a new year or a new week to do so;
- In order to improve we need to know where we have gone wrong and accept our weaknesses. Recently both my diet and fitness regime have gone of the window because of time constraints and because I've taken the 'easy' option - I've skipped the gym in favour or lie in and I've opted for takeaways over cooking and as a result I've lost a lot fitness.
- You also need to be realistic when setting your goals. There's no point promising yourself you're going to workout 5 times a week for 90 minutes if your diary means you barely have an hour a few nights a week. Be honest with yourself and you won't disappoint yourself.
- When you do have time to workout, maximise it. I used to love the 'fast' classes at my old gym because they were 10-20 minutes of high intensity exercise that left me feeling like I'd gone 10 rounds with Tyson! You don't have to spend hours working out to feel good.
- Find your 'love'. Now this isn't something that you will find straight away (unless you're really lucky that is), but once you find the one you will never look back. I used to think that as a girl I needed to love running, dance classes and of course LBT ones - but in reality although I enjoy running I don't love it, I am massively uncoordinated and LBT classes bore me. But I do love lifting weights and knowing that I am going to lift after work gets me through the day sometimes.
- Ever heard the saying 'slow and steady wins the race'? Of course you have and the same is true when starting out or trying to get back into the gym! Instead of trying to go all or nothing straight away, start by making a few small changes; aim to drink more water one week, move more or eat better the next and week-by-week you will start to feel better.
Getting started or back into the swing of things shouldn't be daunting, it should be exciting. I've been so scared to try and regain my fitness over the past few months because I've felt ashamed for losing it, for not being the person I used to and know I can be.
So this week I'm taking my own advice - I'm going to make a few small changes (making sure I drink more water, trying to do a little yoga/ stretching each day, cook more fresh meals) and hopefully soon enough I'll be back in the gym, fear free.
