N.C. State's Top 25 Learfield Directors' Cup finish has been a key success marker during the tenure of Wolfpack AD Yow & here's her perspective on the accomplishment in light of MBB being mentioned in FBI developments, "You tell the truth, always. We know what our culture is. My goodness, you’ve heard us talk about 'ERA: Establish the culture, reinforce the culture, act with integrity when the culture is threatened.' If there has been an errant individual who’s acted outside of the stated and expected culture, so be it. We’ll deal with it." Further, Yow says now the competitive challenge for her portfolio is to show consistency, "It’s one thing to do it once, it’s another thing to make it a habit," as well as indicating she'd prefer to see things settled with the MBB-FBI ordeal before retiring. (link)
Baylor: As the sexual assault scandal unfolded in 2016, school officials were worried about maintaining membership in the Big 12, according to CBS reporter Dodd, who cites a "prominent source close to" the scandal as saying "I was worried about [Big 12] membership." Dodd also quotes the source as saying Baylor's ongoing legal issues could make the scandal the "biggest in higher education." (link); Austin American-Statesman reporter Davis offers support to Dodd's assertion, tweeting that he knows "for a fact that high-level Texas officials wanted Baylor out of the Big 12 on the spot. But they knew it was more wishful thinking than anything else." (link); Former FB HC Briles is not a candidate for the HC position at Waco High School, Waco ISD AD Tusa confirms, saying Briles never applied for the job and the two only had an informal conversation about it. East Carolina Chancellor Staton over the weekend penned an op-ed on the passion and service demonstrated by members of the ECU community, which have convinced him that ECU would soon become "America's next great national university." To support that position, Staton cited "amazing scientific discoveries" by faculty members as well as student successes in a broad range of areas, including athletics. "While we had a tough year in football, basketball and our start-up year for lacrosse, we saw great successes in baseball, volleyball, women’s golf and indoor track. And I know all of our very competitive coaches are fully committed to success." Staton also addressed the parting of ways with former AD Compher, writing: "I’d be remiss if I didn’t note that ECU passions are not always united, and a vigorous campaign to dismiss our athletics director was followed by his decision to leave." (link)
While William & Mary student-athletes achieved laudable success in the classroom last year, posting a cumulative GPA of 3.23, the Tribe only won 47% of its athletic contests, and AD Huge observes: "We need to not be afraid of being successful competitively because here’s the thing: being successful competitively does not diminish our success in the classroom. They’re not mutually exclusive." To that end, the school has hired the PICTOR Group to help map out the athletic department's next five years, and Huge says so far the team has done a "full environmental scan of the landscape of intercollegiate athletics here, nationally, how we stack up against our conference opponents, how we stack up against our regional opponents, and what we need to do to be successful across the board." Regarding freshly minted Prez Rowe, who took over on campus July 1, Huge is excited to begin working with her. "She's a visionary. She likes to win. ... You spend 10 minutes with her and you walk away with more energy that you walked in with. She has a great presence, and I know she’ll lead this institution really well." Finally, asked about the increasing number of female ADs across the country, Huge notes: "As I’ve seen athletic directors hired in the last year, while many more are women than have been in the past, they’re remarkable leaders, several of whom I know personally. I’m really thrilled for the institutions who have hired them because they’ve gotten incredible leaders. There are also some institutions who have hired some incredible male leaders, too. I’m excited. I’m encouraged." (link)
Former Papa John's Chairman Schnatter said that Louisville unilaterally decided to remove the Papa John's name from its FB stadium, telling WLKY: "I didn't get, really, notice that they were going to take it down until after the fact." Schnatter also disputed Prez Bendapudi's assertion that he apologized for his remarks, saying the "administration said I apologized. I think I need to apologize to the players and to the students and to the faculty. But I never apologized for taking the name down. I never knew about it. ... They told me they'd wait over the weekend. So that was not true." Interim UL Sr. Assoc. VP for Communications Drees says Schnatter agreed to have his name removed from the school's Center for Free Enterprise, but asked for time to think about the stadium. "[He and Bendapudi] talked again early Friday before the final decision. Later Friday morning, she called and texted him to share the final decision about the stadium, but he did not respond." Courier-Journal columnist Sullivan has indicated he does not believe Schnatter will sue the university over the stadium naming rights but thinks the consulting firm Schnatter said "pushed" him to use the slur has some "explaining to do." Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
This sure will seem different: Starting August 1st Southwest Airlines will no longer serve peanuts on flights as it moves "to ensure the best on-board experience for everyone, especially for customers with peanut-related allergies." The decision will end a nearly 30-year run for peanuts being the in-flight snack option for LUV. As you might imagine, the National Peanut Board "disagreed with the decision." (link)

The Chronicle of Higher Education has updated its executive compensation database to now include 2016-17 public school data. Of the new entries, former Louisville Prez Ramsey lapped the field at $4.29M, followed by former Auburn Prez Gogue at $1.827M, former Texas system Chancellor McRaven at $1.5M, former Temple Prez Theobald at $1.38M & Texas A&M system Prez Sharp at $1.285M. There's also seven others over $1+: UCF's former Prez Hitt, USF's Genshaft, Northern Illinois boss Baker, Florida's Fuchs, Ohio State Drake, Penn State's Barron & Texas A&M Prez Young. In total, new comp data included for 251 leaders. (link)
Southern Illinois System Prez Dunn has agreed to a voluntary separation with the school and will be paid a six-month severance of $215K. SIU School of Medicine Dean and Provost Emeritus Dorsey will reportedly take over as acting president for a year, earning a base salary of $430K, while the board searches for a permanent replacement. The board is expected to finalize Dunn's removal today, with the transition becoming effective July 30. Dunn has been criticized over his handling of a proposal to reallocate $5.1M in state funding from SIU's Carbondale campus to its Edwardsville campus. Carbondale faculty last week passed a resolution accusing Dunn of attempting to undermine the SIU system. (link)
CBS' Sallee has identified five storylines to watch out for ahead of SEC Media Days, which kick off this week in Atlanta, and atop the list is how Alabama HC Saban will handle questions about his QB situation. "The quarterback conundrum is the highest-profile subject he has faced at SEC Media Days since taking over in Tuscaloosa, and he will be pressed hard to give an actual answer to the lingering quarterback question." Sallee also points to potential narratives around several other QBs in the league, including Mississippi State's Fitzgerald, Georgia's Fromm and Auburn's Stidham. Other storylines include the pivotal nature of this year for LSU HC Orgeron, whether Georgia HC Smart can keep the Bulldogs' momentum rolling, and the "enormous pressure" on Texas A&M HC Fisher. "Now he's in the mix with the best of the best in the SEC West. How will that change his approach to coaching, recruiting and his life behind the mic? With that many commas in his paycheck, something tells me he's not going to sweat much in the Texas heat." (link)
Both South Carolina AD Tanner, who doubles as the DI Baseball Committee chair, as well as ABCA Executive Director Keilitz believe their sport is in really good shape with key improvements of replay & time of play in the chute. Tanner on pace & length of play, "Not just blaming the pitchers, but we’ve got to stay in the box, get on and off the field. Television is great. We need television. So that to me is not part of the equation. We’ve got to do a better job between the lines." Keilitz notes on-going conversations with Major League Baseball Commish Manfred on the timing of the Draft as D1Baseball's Fitt believes the college side should make it a bigger deal, though MLB needs to compromise with not having it overlap with post-season play dates. (link)
Wall Street Journal Leadership columnist Walker during yesterday's World Cup final, "France manager Didier Deschamps, who I profiled in my book, is a model for how elite leaders communicate. He doesn’t rely on speeches. He talks to everybody, 1 to 1, with high intensity, lots of eye contact and physical touch. Watch him work the 2nd half. It’s a masterclass." (link); Walker's book is 'The Captain Class.' Pitch lines: "The Hidden Forces That Creates the World's Greatest Teams [...] a bold new theory of leadership drawn from the elite captains who inspired their teams to achieve extraordinary success." The facilities upgrades in Starkville are ongoing according to Mississippi State AD Cohen who camped with The Dispatch. Cohen: "I don't see [construction projects] as a cycle because for something to be cyclical suggests there's a beginning and an end. There is no beginning and there is no end. It just keeps moving forward." A renovated Football locker room at Davis Wade Stadium and Baseball's new Dudy Noble Field are part of the current improvements. Women's Soccer and Volleyball are both getting new video boards and new Volleyball HC Darty has "bigger plans for Newell-Grissom Building." More Cohen: "Our staff gets together and says, 'Here's what we want to do, we want to build these things, how do we do it?' but we have to have a solid financial plan. Thanks to our Bulldog Club and all the other support mechanisms we have, we've been able to do things that quite frankly we haven't been able to do in the past." An indoor tennis facility is on the horizon and would give every sport on campus a modern renovation. (link)
NewsOK.com's Tramel writes on how he believes the new arena district in Norman, which will include a new arena for Oklahoma, will benefit the city more than the Sooners. Tramel notes the draw of young professionals to Oklahoma City as a much more contemporary living option, but, "As the home of OU, Norman always has had the inside lane on attracting and keeping young professionals. Barring geographic considerations like oceans, mountains or remoteness, college towns long have been the mecca in most states." (link); One more on the facilities tip as South Dakota will begin construction on a new outdoor FB practice space this summer with completion either late this Fall or early next year before Spring practice. (link)
CBSSports.com's Parrish wonders why so many coaches and administrators are now back-peddling and pointing to the Commission on College Basketball's recommendations as "just ideas, of which there were always many under construction." Parrish toots his own horn with his column last week that questioned many of the Commission's recs and how it influenced the higher-ups: "Which is great, by the way. I'd rather them be moved by public criticism than go forward with a nonsensical plan to replace traditional July Evaluation Period events run by shoe companies with NCAA-sponsored camps that fix zero problems and reduce opportunities for young people. It's why I'm glad I wrote the column last week instead of waiting until after the new calendar was in place." (link)
