Recently there's been a flurry of activity on Twitter about putting an end to "manels" (male-only conference/seminar panels) and the un-female friendly nature of a selection of associated paraphernalia which puts women at a disadvantage when on a conference stage. These include:
  • "Bar stool" type seats that are too high (if you're as short as me they require advanced climbing and abseiling skills) and difficult to sit on unless wearing trousers
  • Microphones that require either pockets or belts
  • Lecterns that end at neck height

WHEN ONE DOOR CLOSES ... KEEP PUSHING OTHERS OPEN



Many of you know that I stood for Election as the non-Aldermanic Sheriff in the City of London on 25 June. It was the first time since 2011 that the election was contested and three rooms in Guildhall were packed to capacity (1500 Liverymen in total).  The campaign had started towards the end of last September -  a long 9 months during which Women in the City has taken a bit of a back seat. 

On the day,  the three non-Aldermanic Shrieval candidates and the Aldermanic candidate each gave a 4 minute speech before there was a calI for a show of hands for each of us.  The Hon Liz Green and Alderman Vincent Keavney were voted as the Non-Aldermanic and Aldermanic Sheriffs respectively.

Early on in my campaign someone wisely advised me to have more than one objective in mind. It was important to me that I (1) spread the word as widely as possible about the Election and the role of the Sheriffs in the City and (2) share how important I believe diversity and inclusion is to the future of the Civic City (Livery Companies, Shrievalty and Lord Mayor).

When I first announced my potential candidature over 2000 people read my post on LinkedIn. 5000 read the Press Release announcing my official submission of election papers and just over 2000 read about the election day.  I was also featured in two editions of City Matters newspaper and started a Twitter conversation (@GlassSeller) about the importance of greater diversity and inclusion.  I think I can say "Tick" on those objectives.

I received support from so many people - Liverymen across the 100+ Livery Companies and business colleagues, too. Following the election  I've received wonderful emails from complete strangers about my Election Speech, so my special thanks to Meg Sanders of Writing Project for helping me polish it to mirror-like perfection!

Congratulations to our
  • 2014 Future Leaders Award Joint Winner Naomi Bowman and her husband on the birth of their son, Elijah Edward Otto on 8 July.
  • 2009 Woman of Achievement Award Insurance Category Winner 2009, Sue Langley OBE on her successful election as Alderman for the Ward of Aldgate. This means there are now 4 female Aldermen in the City (plus 21 male). The others are Baroness Scotland, Alison Gowman and Emma Edhem (recently elected to Candlewick Ward).

SUMMER BREAK

Women in the City is taking a break during August.  We'll be back in September refreshed and ready to keep pushing at those doors, making a difference and supporting women to be the very best they can!
