D1.jobs: New opportunity below at Army West Point. Post your openings in the same space where thousands of administrators start their days. Here's how.
At yesterday's introductory presser, interim Michigan State Prez Engler cited newly named AD Beekman's legal and business acumen as well as his "calming presence" as factors that ultimately led to his hiring. "I think we could have looked across the country and been hard-pressed to find somebody that knows Michigan State the way Bill does with the qualities he has." Beekman intimated that he plans to be "laser-focused" on student-athlete success, asserting that changing the campus culture is a "very, very high priority. You can come up with all kinds of policies and procedures that can collect dust on the shelf, but you really have to believe it in your heart. You have to think about it every day as you go through your day. That's the culture piece." For those who were looking for MSU to hire someone with no prior connection to the previous administration, Beekman offered: "Give us six months or a year and re-assess. I think you'll be pleased." (link); The Lansing State Journal has published a profile on Beekman, who briefly served as acting president before the appointment of Engler this year. Former Lansing Mayor Hollister recalls Beekman as a welcoming presence within MSU's leadership. "He played a very quiet, behind-the-scenes role. Very confident, very skilled, very diplomatic." Former college dormmate Blair also offered a positive review of Beekman, saying: "The Bill Beekman I knew was always the steady, calm influence in our circle of friends. He always treated people fairly, which is why I believe he was a wise choice." Full profile. (link)
Austin Peay has selected Duke Senior Assoc. AD of Internal Affairs Harrison as its next AD, effective August 15. Prez White this week said Harrison has a "thorough understanding of collegiate sports at every level and the skills to keep our remarkable athletics program moving forward without missing a beat. It is clear that Mr. Harrison approaches every issue with the student-athlete experience in mind, which is of utmost importance to the Austin Peay Governors’ athletics program.” Harrison, who has served in various roles at Duke and Tennessee since 2001: "Our primary goal will be to make the experience of our student athletes the best it can possibly be as we strive to have a championship program athletically, academically and socially. And we’ll do so with the highest degrees of integrity and sportsmanship. Working alongside the student athletes, coaches, staff, the community of Clarksville and the Governors’ passionate fans and supporters, we will build on past achievements and embark on an extremely bright future for Austin Peay athletics." (link)
As previously reported, Murray State AD Ward has agreed to take the same position at Abilene Christian, effective August 6. In announcing the hire, ACU Prez Schubert said that in Ward "you have a guy who’s been a successful leader for a Division I athletic program for 13 years with a very proven track record of success. … Athletics, the business, is a very complex arena, and it can have a significantly positive and sometimes negative impact on the university, depending on the leader you select. Allen brings a tremendous amount of proven success and experience for the job, and that made him the right guy." Ward: “When I was at Murray State, I said, 'It's not about me. None of the success is about me. It’s about Murray State.' The same thing goes about Abilene Christian. ... I’ve always found I’ve been very successful if you make good decisions in the long-term best interests of the university, success is going to come. It means you’re hiring good people. You’re putting them in good position. They’re recruiting good student-athletes, and you’re going to be successful. It’s happened everywhere I’ve been, and I think that’s where the focus needs to be." UMass Lowell AD Skinner has announced his retirement, effective in September. Skinner, who guided the River Hawks program through its transition to DI, said this week: "To this university and the people here, I owe everything. UMass Lowell gave me the opportunity to have meaning and purpose in my work, and not everyone gets to do that. I have had the pleasure of working alongside so many great people across the Lowell campus and the UMass system to ensure the integrity of the athletic program, while at the same time establishing a foundation for our student-athletes to enjoy success in academics, athletics and as caring citizens." Chancellor Moloney: "UMass Lowell is extremely fortunate to have had someone with Dana's vision, commitment and competitiveness at the helm of our athletic department, and as a member of our senior leadership team, during such a transformative era. We are thankful for all that he has accomplished." Also, not to be overlooked, Skinner will be succeeded by Deputy AD Casey. (link)
SEC FB Media Days:
+ Commish Sankey with a tweetstorm leading into yesterday's opening. Of note, SEC Network will be available on Altice in NYC, meaning it's now on every major cable & satellite provider around the nation. Sankey also points to required integrity around the growth of legalized sports gambling & the need for student-athlete protections. (link)
+ During his podium statements & afterwards in a Q&A, Sankey says he expects "most, if not all" of the Rice Commission recommendations to be enacted in August. Sankey also points to the possibility of standardized injury reports & analytics services to better monitor the legitimacy of sports gambling movements. (link)
+ Yahoo's Forde writes on Texas A&M's push for national glory on the gridiron with the hiring of former Florida State skipper Fisher. Forde, in closing, "All Jimbo Fisher has to do now is win a national title. The money may be surreal, but the expectations are very real." (link); Fisher was, of course, asked about his exit from Tallahassee, "I have unbelievable memories of Florida State…when you leave, is there ever a good way to leave? You try to do it the best you can, but I had no intentions of ever leaving." (link)
+ Where the SEC Media Days will go after 2019's return to Hoover is a bit of an unknown, however Commish Sankey mentioned the possibility of Nashville. Sankey on being in Atlanta this year, "I can see already there are fans who likely haven't seen this event or been a part of this event who are here today. We can do that in different places – just like we had our men's basketball tournament in St. Louis in March of this year." (link)
Big 12 FB Media Days:
+ "We are still in the process of doing things that I expect we will bring to a close in the not too distant future. Beyond that, (Baylor athletic director) Mack Rhoades has done an outstanding job working with us and has done an outstanding job working with the verification committee, and Matt Rhule, as good a football coach as he is, he’s an even better human being. [...] We will continue our process, we will issue a report and we’ve said publicly that we will issue a written report. When we can make more comments on it we will do so." That's Commish Bowlsby on where things stand with Baylor. (link)
+ During prepared remarks, Bowlsby voiced continued confidence in his league, "We've done some good work and I like our position right now. [...] I'm as bullish as I can be about the Big 12 right now." Further, Bowlsby does not see an expansion of the College Football Playoff in the cards & noted the difficulty of a round robin FB scheduling format ("Nobody is going to win the Big 12 by who they don't play.") (link)
+ Bowlsby on injury reports given the developments in sports gambling, "My sense is there will be a hue & cry for that to happen. As long as don’t get to far into specifics (of the injury), some sort of simple system should work." (link)
+ FB Media Days in '19 & '20 are moving to AT&T Stadium. (link)
Former Missouri tutor Kumar yesterday posted on social media that she plans to release a list of names associated with alleged academic fraud at the university, writing: "So...On July 18, 2018 at 1839 I will release the full list of students, classes, and coordinators on TWITTER, poor people’s justice site, along side the new allegations. I have nothing to fear. I am tired, I am broke, and FEARLESS." In response, Missouri released a statement indicating it has "worked in step with the NCAA" and others to investigate the charges," adding that on June 13, the university "appeared before the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions to review its investigative findings, and the Committee has since added a previously unnamed involved party and given notice of the Committee’s allegation to that individual. ... We remain confident that this review will reveal that the University, as well as its student-athletes and staff, have shown great integrity in responding to the allegations raised." At least one student-athlete has already been suspended in connection to the allegations. (link)
Former UCLA FB student-athlete Rosen has been working on an idea to fairly compensate student-athletes, and working with former Lafayette baseball student-athlete Gonser and USC law student Bitzer has put the idea on paper. "The Modernization of College Athletics as an Incentive for Graduation," Rosen says, should "be like the iPhone, constantly updating to stay current with the times." In it, Rosen, et al. propose allowing players to profit from opportunities during playing careers but actually cashing in only once they've earned a diploma. In this way, student-athletes are still competing within the NCAA's amateur construct. The system would be built around a nonprofit "Clearinghouse," which would work with the NCAA and act as an intermediary between student-athletes and potential endorsers. Revenue would be generated on three tiers (national, regional and local) would be distributed into personal player accounts, an NCAA-wide pool, the NCAA itself, the clearinghouse, and a general scholarship fund that would provide financial aid for academic opportunities. Rosen: "We need to find a way where we can mutually push in the same direction. This can legitimately help both sides, the college side and the student-athlete side." More inside. (link)
Papa John'sLouisville has not completely shut the door on accepting future donations from former Papa John's Chairman Schnatter, according to AD Tyra, who said yesterday that it's "something we need to think about. He's been a terrific supporter of our sports for a long time, not just the football program but many sports. He's our largest donor to the athletic program, and we've enjoyed that." Tyra did last week voice support for removing the Papa John's name from Cardinal Stadium while also remarking that he wanted to wait before deciding whether Schnatter would be given the opportunity to apologize to student-athletes. "I think at this time, I want the players to kind of heal a little bit." (link); Meanwhile, Louisville has announced it plans to pull Papa John's signs off of Cardinal Stadium in time for the first home game. (link); Oregon State cuts sponsorship ties with the pizza chain. Beavers AD Barnes: "The derogatory and insensitive comments made by Papa John's founder John Schnatter are not reflective of Oregon State University's values and the inclusive environment we strive to foster throughout the university community and within OSU Athletics for all student-athletes and fans." (link)
Latest SBJ: Van Wagner gets the spotlight with a portfolio that's 24 schools deep right now & expected to reach 30 by the time FB kicks this season. EVP Palisi on his team's focus on the mid-major space, "We saw a void and thought we could fill it." Stony Brook AD Heilbron speaks glowingly about VWSE as his property's total sponsorship haul increased by 178% after two years of the partnership. Heilbron: "They really know how to monetize schools our size. They know where the opportunities are. They’ve perfected the art of creating partnerships with schools at our level." Georgia State is another success story, not only on the bottom line, but getting all key players on board for a full campus push. (link); SBJ Executive Editor Madkour takes a look at how The Aspire Group has changed ticket sales in college athletics over the past 10 years. The piece reads as an oral history lesson. Lots here, notably the launch story, which included a meeting with then-Georgia Tech senior leader & current Clemson boss Radakovich when he & other Tech executives asked Aspire co-founder Mullin to sell Yellow Jackets tickets. Mullin: "So, outsourcing of ticket marketing sales and service, which is the main core of our business, started because Georgia Tech and Dan Radakovich had a vision and needed help." Interestingly, Mullin also says former Women's Soccer student-athletes make the best hires. Lots more. (link); Quality read on the evolution of facilities & venues as the challenge of putting butts in seats continues. Innovative seats sections that include bars, cooling apparatuses, craft beer, hometown cuisine, plus new ideas on scoreboards & additional ideas are starting to permeate the marketplace to drive attendance. USA Today's Berkowitz gets his hands on 2016 compensation data from Stanford, which shows FB HC Shaw earned $4.3M ($3M base, $665K in bonuses & $530K in deferred comp). Former MBB HC Dawkins made $4.1M in '16 & as Berkowitz notes, "Santa Clara (Calif.) Superior Court records show Dawkins -- now head coach at UCF -- is still pursuing millions in damages from Stanford in breach of contract suit pertaining to his buyout." (link)
D1Baseball's Rogers on the proposal from the Big South to allow Baseball programs to play two match-ups in the Fall that don't count against the 56-game total, "The #BigSouth did not intend the proposal to be this way, but in its current form, the proposal makes it where you can only play two fall games overall. You can't play a third game that counts against your 56-game schedule. Sources tell me the @BigSouthSports has sent in a rebuttal to the @NCAA to have one thing clarified: There should be no restrictions in place for teams who choose to play extra games (beyond the two) that count against their 56. TBD on if the NCAA will amend the proposal." (link)
The Alabama System Board of Trustees has given the green light to a 20-year lease agreement between UAB & the BJCC Authority, which would provide a new home for Blazers FB starting in 2021. $25K rent for home games in the first 10 years, $15K for postseason kicks & $10K for the spring game. (link); In other facility news, North Carolina's Soccer programs won't be playing at Fetzer Field when the upcoming 2018 seasons commence. Construction continues on the venue & November looks to be the new expected completion date. Field Hockey's new digs at Ehringhaus Field will be ready, but FB's new indoor space is also delayed. Side note: "If the indoor practice facility is not substantially completed by Sept. 1, 2018, head football coach Larry Fedora has an option to terminate his contract without cause or having to pay liquidated damages to the school." (link)

(link); Minnesota Board of Regents Chair McMillan on what the school must look for in a new president: "The Board [of Regents] hasn’t spent much time, if any, talking about these characteristics, but I’m willing to go a little bit out on a limb that we’re going to be looking for a president who brings the same level of engagement, interest and commitment to the athletics world that President Kaler did. Academics are going to be No. 1 but a very close second can be the athletics side of the house. (link); Looks like the NFL's Oakland Raiders will bring legendary sportscaster Musburger back into the booth as the new voice of the Raiders. Two-year deal with Compass Media to call the games on the radio, so Musburger will transition to Vegas when the team does. (link)
Knowing when to "manage up" as opposed to pushing back is a key skill to professional advancement, according to notable 'Bet On Yourself' author Bond. Key passage: "Resistance and hostility rarely work. If you resist too long or too hard, you’ll find yourself being left behind. Resisting change is like a standoff that halts forward movement. Your boss likely made the change in order to make progress or because something wasn’t working. And chances are your boss has different information on hand than you do, so try to give your manager the benefit of the doubt–at least a little. Assume your boss is doing their best to make the right decision for the organization, even if you don’t personally like it." More. (link)

Former Tennessee AD Hamilton hosts Texas boss Del Conte on his 'From The Chair' podcast series & the pair dive into how personal backgrounds shape philosophies on people & relationships. Del Conte also covers being present, dressing nice & the importance of first impressions. Notably, "As athletic directors, we don’t play or coach the game. Our job is to be the wind beneath the wings of our coaches and student-athletes. […] To affect the outcome of a coach’s ability to be successful, I need to provide them and their student-athletes with the tools they need to be successful; I always believed I could do that through development. […] Coaches are the greatest asset our country has because they can make or break you by just believing in you and helping you achieve things you didn’t think you could do. […] Don’t try to be something you’re not, embrace yourself." More. (link)
Mississippi State eclipsed the $100M revenue mark for the first time in school history, but Bulldogs' AD Cohen and Deputy AD/CFO Benko explain to The Dispatch how they want to be one of the most fiscally responsible departments, not just one with the biggest haul. Cohen: "Everything is relative to your competition. We have to do it differently than our competition does it. We're not going to out-money the SEC. We have to make great decisions on how we spend our budget money, and we're going to make great decisions. We're going to have input from our coaches, we're going to have input from our administration, input from our fans, input from the president of this great university (Mark Keenum) and we're going to do the best with what's around us. To be honest with you, nothing else matters." MSU expenses were $86.3M compared to $100.06M in revenue, leaving 13.7% unspent during FY17. Comparatively, Florida left 11.6%, LSU 10.8%, Auburn 9.9%, Alabama 8.9%, and Tennessee 7.3%. Fiscal responsibility especially important to Cohen and Benko for the future of the facilities in Starkville. Benko starts from scratch with the budget each year, instead of tweaking annually. Lots here. (link)
Purdue Fort Wayne boss Hartley Hutton is the latest leader on 1.Question & with the rebranding of her department front & center. "When we talk about process and change on a large scale, it's always important to get your chancellor or president involved. […] We had to make this attractive to all the stakeholders involved, senior administration on campus, alumni, community, local business, Student-Athletes, everybody. […] I wasn't really a fan of phasing things in. If your going to do something with your logo or brand, you should just do it." Sixteen-minute listen. (link)
Clemson AD Radakovich called an all-hands-on-deck meeting back in February to discuss the Nassar developments at Michigan State with every member of his department. Tigers Assoc. AD for Student-Athlete Services & Performance Honnen: "We felt it was really important with the news that came out about Nassar to make sure we’re remind our staff, 'Hey, if you see something, you say something.'" A visit & consultation from the Dan Beebe Group has also helped CU wrap its head & hands around the issues. Radakovich: "We have a great team here. We have resources from the institution. But we’re kind of nestled up here in the northwestern part of South Carolina and we would be foolish to think that some of the things that happen around the country couldn’t happen. Let’s take the pieces that we feel like are important for us and put them into place." (link)

(link); From Law360: "Texas A&M University has convinced the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board to block Washington Soap Co. from registering the phrase '12th Man Hands' for its soap, with the board saying there was a likelihood of confusion because the university frequently gives away rally towels bearing the '12th Man' slogan at football games." (link)
