I am glad to share with you the report and videos of the Roundtable Discussion on Ethics Education to Strengthen Families and Nurture Spirituality in Early Childhood for the Prevention of Violence Against Children, organised by Arigatou International Geneva and Pastoral da Criança International in Curitiba, Brazil in March 2018.

Religious leaders are well positioned to support families and caregivers to adopt parenting practices that are conducive to the healthy development of the child, not only physically but also emotionally and spiritually. They can support fostering values such as empathy, respect, and compassion towards others, through religious narratives and teachings that contribute to the positive representations of others and prevent problems of alienation, construction of others as enemies, and inter-communal violence. Religious leaders can contribute to challenging cultural and social norms, as well as patriarchal structures and practices that perpetuate or justify violence against children.

As a contribution to the commitments made during the GNRC Fifth Forum held in Panama, Arigatou International Geneva is strengthening the efforts to work closely with religious communities to support families in fostering values and nurture spirituality in child upbringing that contributes to their full and sound development and to the prevention of violence against children in the family context. This roundtable discussion is part of these efforts.

We hope the discussions and reflections held during the roundtable discussion will further develop into concrete actions with religious communities and families for the well being of children.

In peace,

Maria Lucia Uribe
Director Arigatou International Geneva
