Successful Evening Presentation on EC7 to IStructE

Our Dr Andy Goodwin gave a presentation to the Regional Group of the IStructE on 16 May 2018.  Entitled “EC7 Is Just For Geotechnical Engineers – Isn’t It?”, the talk aimed to de-mystify EC7 and help structural engineers recognise its implications for them.  The presentation was very well received, with questions and post-meeting discussions going on for almost as long as the presentation!  Many thanks to the IStructE for organising the event.

Courses in August and September 2018

The summer is here but we still have plenty of courses coming up.  Full details of all courses can be seen in our latest calendar.  Selected highlights include:

Contractual Awareness on  2 August
The ICE Professional Review - Preparing for the Interview on numerous dates in August and early September
Slope Stability - Principles and Practice on 13 September
Pile Foundations - Principles and Practice on 20 September
Ground Investigation Design to EC7 - The Essentials (half day course) on 27 September

In addition to these standard day courses, we are running our Design Programme on Shallow Foundations and Settlements.  This programme of 6 evening courses allows delegates to explore the subject matter in greater depth than is possible during a typical day course.

All courses are run in Chesterfield unless stated otherwise on the calendar.  Discounts are available for group bookings or delegates attending more than one course. Please call or email us to reserve your place on a course.

Preparation for ICE Professional Reviews

It's that time of year again when candidates for the Autumn 2018 Professional Reviews with the ICE have to submit their applications.  We wish the best of luck to everyone!

Good preparation is the key to success.  We offer a range of courses that address all aspects of the professional review.
The most common courses we run at this time of year are our mock interview sessions.  Run by a very experienced ICE reviewer, each course begins with an overview of the review process from a reviewers perspective before each candidate experiences a mock interview.  Individual feedback on your draft Professional Report and your performance at interview is provided.

So far we have 6 dates in our diary in August and September, including courses bespoke for individual companies, but places are fast running out.  Feedback indicates the sessions are always very useful and well received.  Contact us for details and information on how to book.

More CPD Ideas...

We have a few CPD ideas for you all this month, including the Grenfell Tower Report which we start with.  The ideas are suited to all but may be especially useful to candidates sitting for their ICE Professional Review in the autumn.

Grenfell Tower Report - The Report of the UK’s Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety, led by Dame Judith Hackitt, was published on 17 May by the UK Government.  The report makes recommendations on the future regulatory system relating to fire safety in the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower fire in June 2017.  This is an important topic for everyone in the industry, and it may well come up at review in the Autumn session.  It has been covered frequently in NCE and the national press, but if you haven't seen the full report then it is worth reading it.

Leadership -  Management and Leadership is one of the attributes required of a civil engineer, and a topic that will without fail come up at review.  Do you know the difference between management and leadership? What makes a good leader? Is there more than one style of leadership?  There is plenty to find on this topic on the web, but we suggest trying this site for starters.

Funding of Projects - This is not a subject that is often discussed in the design office, but we all need to have an awareness of this topic.  It influences many aspects, from cost and programme management, to lending and progress reports.  It is a vast topic but we found a useful introductory guide here.  Happy reading!

We
hope you find the above ideas useful.  More will be forthcoming in future newsletters.
