Are you ready to ride? Join MCBC and GWC on Sat. Aug. 25 at the Jury Duty Parking lot at 10 am to 2 pm for a fun and educational ride. We will ride 5 miles to Hamilton using back roads, then take the SMART train back. Train tickets are $5.50 for adults; $2.75 for seniors/youth. This will bring us back to the Civic Center for a picnic! For route and more info, click here.

Dixie Outdoor Classroom

Thanks to the generous support of the Marin Fish and Wildlife Commission and to Michael Jennings of GelWater, we have gone through summer with plants that are thriving along Miller Creek. For the first time, the Elderberry (Sambucus niger) has berries, which the birds will love when they are ripe. Thanks also to Miller Creek supporter Stephen Nestel who built these fantastic wooden sign posts for us. These help kids and residents learn about the plants we put in and how wildlife needs them.

AUGUST 1--NEXT GWC MEETING
This meeting will be a strategic planning session. All are welcome to come and help us prioritize plans for the rest of this year and next. Floating Islands 2 is definitely on the list.

San Rafael - Smith Ranch Road Pond
Roger Roberts is leading the effort with GWC to clear this pond from the non-native Ludwigia that has taken over and reduced the water surface available for wildlife. During the drought, this plant created a solid mat you could walk on! We hope to bring this area back to health. This invasive weed is also showing up in the Civic Center lagoon, where County staff are pulling it out to keep it from spreading.

           Invasive Ludwigia spreading out--choking water
This is a joint effort involving local hydrologist Rachel Kamman (who has been instrumental in developing the plan, pro bono), Paul Jensen, Director of Community Development for the City of San Rafael, and David Nicholson Associate Civil Engineer with the San Rafael Dept. of Public Works. The updated biological opinion/assessment was done pro bono by Gary Oates and Stephanie Bishop for Environmental  Science Associates (ESA). We will be relying on additional community support to bring this project to completion.

Monthly Meetings
The GWC Board meets on the first Wednesday of the month in the Community Room of the Northgate MallEnter by the mall Food Court; turn R immediately; follow corridor to elevator; go to 2nd floor.  Meetings are from 7 - 9 pm and everyone is welcome.  We discuss matters of interest concerning our local creek and bay area watersheds. The next meeting is August 1, 2018
