16th July 2018
It's the end of another academic year, but one with a difference with the first year of the new D&T GCSE and the new A levels behind us, and the NEA ahead in the new term. It's certainly been a year of challenges, something that is set to continue for some time to come while the new qualifications bed themselves in. Paul and I have not been great at doing our regular newsletters this year, simply because of lack of time with the workload the changes have brought, but we hope our almost daily posts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, as well as the ever growing Let's Learn resources on the website, have in some way offered support and that they will continue to do so over the summer helping you prepare for the new year. If you're moving schools don't forget to change your contact details in the 'update preferences' link at the end of the newsletter. We wish everyone a well earned summer break.
#ThinkDo Thursday Free Resources
Each Thursday two FREE #ThinkDo activity cards are released on Facebook. Below are 2 of the cards shared recently. Click on the images to download the cards from the original Facebook post (no Facebook account needed). Lots more cards can be found on the website and in the photos section of Facebook
Over the summer holiday there will be no new #ThinkDo activity cards but there will be other FREE resources each Thursday so follow my Facebook page to make sure you don't miss out.
Free Let's Learn Resources
Let’s Learn is a resource bank of videos, #ThinkDo activities, web links & other information designed to support learning in D&T. This resource bank is constantly being developed. Take a look at these Let's Learn pages.

United Nations 17 Global Development Goals
We've mentioned these quite a bit over the last 18 months as they are a great resource for getting students to think more broadly about design problems. With the NEA starting they are worth mentioning again particularly as the RSA Student Design Awards used these as the focus for 8 design challenges, the winners of which can be seen on the Student Design Awards website. Both the Global Goals and the winning entries are great inspirational starting points for GCSE and A level students.

NEA Contextual Challenge Rules
We produced this summary of the rules for the D&T GCSE NEA for our own purposes to give us an overview of the guidance from each exam board. It’s our working document created in response to the most common questions we get asked by teachers & it helps ensure our responses are accurate. Information has been taken directly from each specification & has not been adapted. This might be a useful download for teachers as a quick reference (note, you should still read your spec and refer to the JCQ regulations).

  • One for the summer holiday 'to do' list is an exhibition starting on 20th July (until 4th Nov 2018) at the New Lanark Visitor Centre in South Lanarkshire in Scotland. The 'Game Plan: Board Games Rediscovered' exhibition celebrates all things board game related and includes interactive displays and more than 100 objects, including games from all over the world, exploring the history of board games, their influence and their design. The Centre also has a permanent exhibition telling the story of the cotton mill village of New Lanark set up by social pioneer, Robert Owen. Click here for other ideas on D&T places to visit over the summer.
  • Create Education are the education arm of Ultimaker and they're running a competition to collect tips and advice that will help others manage 3D printing in the classroom with the aim of publishing the tips as a resource. If you share a tip using the hashtag #CREATETopTips (or send the tip in an email to enquiries@createeducation.com) you stand a chance of winning an Ultimaker 3D printer kit for your school. Visit Create Education for more information.
  • Even if you’re not a fan of Apple, this article on the iMac is a great example of design iteration over a number of years. It's a nice student friendly document with some great images and it might also be be good to adapt for a display.
  • Fashion, maths and male role models all in one video! Dr Mark Liu's fashion design work is influenced by science and maths as well as zero waste principles. He has also create a drape measure for measuring curves on the body. His website is also well worth a look.
  • The British Dyslexia Association has put out guidelines aiming to encourage designers & businesses to make their work more accessible to those with dyslexia by thinking more about typefaces, colour, spacing and imagery choices. Depending on the focus of their NEA project this could be a useful report for some students to use to when thinking about certain types of user needs. Read the guide.
  • If you are looking for a club for the new academic year take a look at the ‘Knit a Neuron’ campaign for the Stoke Mandeville Spinal Research and the National Spinal Injuries Centre (despite the title entries don't have to be knitted and the neurons can be made using any method). The campaign aims to raise funds for the charity, as well as to raise the profile of the work they do to improve the quality of life for those affected by paralysis. All neurons will be combined into a spinal cord sculpture. A variety of ideas to inspire the neurons are available on the website.

A Few Changes To Our Courses ....
Now the academic year is coming to an end we've been reviewing courses we'll be offering from September onwards. Like most companies we're having to tighten our belts and some courses have been reviewed to make them more cost effective, but we're also keen to support teachers and schools who for various reasons find it difficult to access CPD. With this in mind we've introduced different types of courses to suit different budgets and needs:
  • D&T:Connect - our lowest cost course, which is a 2 hour after school CPD event (note this is not a Teach Meet but is a formal CPD event). At £5 this is a very low cost event designed to support teachers who find it difficult to access CPD. It is mostly only available local to where we live because it runs at a loss. Find out more
  • D&T Roadshow - Our largest & most popular course that is more like a mini conference. The focus is on delivering theory work through practical and the day is a ‘light touch’event packed full of hands on activities. The course travels the country with a new theme each academic year. At £80 this is a low cost event designed to support teachers who find it difficult to access CPD. The day includes practical activities with accompanying resources, along with freebies for all delegates & the chance to win prizes. Find out more.
  • D&T Roadshow Plus - This is like the standard Roadshow but with ‘more’ hence the name. It has a ‘heavier touch’ with a more formal approach, more of a focus on pedagogy, more detailed content that the standard Roadshow & more resources to take away, including electronic curriculum resources, as well as resources to support activities e.g. a piece of equipment or a materials samples pack. It is also a smaller event with less delegates. The course travels the country with a new theme each academic year. This is a mid price range course at £175. Find out more.
  • VIP Bespoke courses - The full monty! This is one of our traditional courses and the higher cost (£295) reflects the depth of content that is covered, the personalised nature of the course and the substantial resources delegates take away. Numbers are deliberately kept low in order to provide a more personalised day. These course focus more on specialist content covering specific aspects of the curriculum e.g. A level, exam success. Find out more.
We will also be continuing to deliver some courses on behalf of the National STEM Learning Centre, all of which are bursary funded if you are in a state school or academy. Look for the bursary funded label on the course calendar. All current courses for each of the above categories can be seen below with lots more in the pipeline ready for release over the next few weeks. Keep an eye on the course calendar to see when they are released.
