Microplastics...they're
EVERYWHERE!
In several editions ago of the Watershed News, we shared how the Adventure Scientists were researching microplastics across the world including here in our very own Gallatin Watershed. They have released their Final Report and a peer-reviewed scientific journal article in which the findings of the study surprised even them! Their report is well worth the read! To give you a little taste of what you will find, the Gallatin study is the most in-depth study of microplastic pollution in a watershed to date and 57% of samples contained microplastic pollution.

You can read their article here, the scientific paper here, and request the dataset here.
How Resilient are we?
Have you ever thought about how resilient we are as a community? How well are the businesses around you doing? How ready are your neighbors and you for natural disasters like flooding and wildfire? The Department of Commerce's Montana Ready communities Initiative (MRCI) has released a statewide, 5 minute survey to answer these questions. It is important that as many people as possible fill out this survey so that the development of the Resilience Framework is comprehensive and well informed.
For more information, please visit the MRCI website or contact them at 406.841.2770.
Bad ol' Blooms
Harmful Aquatic Blooms (HABs) are on their way here in the Big Sky State. Mostly found in standing bodies of water that get high sun exposure, these HABs can cause great damage. While naturally occurring as floating mats, they produce toxins that can prove poisonous to all manner of animals; including humans. Even just being in the water, without drinking any, can prove dangerous. The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Safety have created a website on HABs to provide information, but also, to have the public submit locations of HABS.
