DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION

3 questions to ask when you budget for voice tech

Have we hit peak ‘voice summit’? Executives and innovators are rapidly educating themselves on what is near-term possible when it comes to voice technology, and the emerging crop of conferences dedicated to conversational interfaces is evidence of their enthusiasm.

On Tuesday, Luminary Labs CEO Sara Holoubek will speak at Modev’s Voice Summit, which bills itself as “the largest voice tech event of the year.” Sara will join Amazon’s Dario Rivera, Merck’s Robert Dribbon, and Wellpepper’s Anne Weiler to discuss the art of the possible for voice tech in health. We’re also supporting the planning of the Voice.Health Summit, in conjunction with the Connected Health Conference in October.

Voice is a new digital frontier, and in many ways, it’s still very early. It’s easy to forget that voice isn’t just one technology — it’s the three-way intersection of IoT (devices), AI (services), and UX (interactions).
As Sara pointed out on LinkedIn earlier this week, voice tech isn’t perfect yet, but we’re going to get there. As with any digital disruption, organizations in every industry are quickly getting up to speed on the near-term and long-term applications. As you plan for 2019, ask yourself:
  • What is the problem you’re trying to solve? To avoid shiny object syndrome, start with a real problem. Then develop a hypothesis for how voice might address that challenge.
  • What is near-term possible? Engage your team in understanding what’s possible now and what the long-term applications might look like. Conferences like the Voice Summit and Voice.Health are a good way to find out what’s already out there and what other organizations are working on.
  • How can you test in a low-risk environment and build internal expertise? Create a small-scale proof of concept that will help you develop the competency while making a long-range business case.
We’re always up for a conversation about what you’re thinking and what you have planned. If you’ll be an upcoming conference, let us know — or email us at hello@luminary-labs.com if we can be of service.

Rolls Royce is developing “what can only be described as a tiny robot cockroach, that can crawl inside airplane engines to fix them.”

Technology developed at CERN — the European Organization for Nuclear Research — has resulted in a “breakthrough color medical scanner.” Scientists say the vivid images could soon be used for routine patient care.

October 15 is Global Handwashing Day. It’s also Sickweather’s first annual Cold Cough Flu Conference in Kansas City.

Apple’s head of search and Siri’s last remaining co-founder have left the company. A former Google executive is taking over Apple’s Siri unit, marking a major leadership change.

A new study from MIT maps job skills and networks to explain why it’s difficult for lower-wage workers to acquire new skills and access new careers when manual jobs are displaced. Use the interactive tool to see how your own skills are connected to larger networks — and estimate your job’s automation risk

“Diversity” and “inclusion” aren’t interchangeable. Are you using these words correctly?
