Six Fantastic Workshops on offer!

Fundamentals of running simulation programs: from planning to execution
Facilitators: Tess Vawser and Tom Hallahan
Organisation: Epworth HealthCare Victoria

Overview: The target audience for this interactive workshop is novice participants involved to planning and executing simulation programs - optimal experience level would be 0-2 years’ experience in simulation education.   The workshop will provide participants with a variety of templates and hands - on practice in planning and facilitating simulation programs specific to their environment.  At the completion of this workshop it is intended that the participants will have:
  • Been exposed to and developed an understanding of the range of policies and processes required to facilitate a simulation program
  • Been exposed to a variety of templates that can be adapted to various settings
  • Developed policies or processes specific to their individual program requirements
  • Designed and implemented a simulation scenario.

Audience: All those working in simulation

TAG Team Patient Safety: Enhancing patient safety by building students’ confidence and resilience
Facilitator: A/Prof Stephen Guinea
Organisation: Australian Catholic University

Overview: TAG TEAM Patient Safety Simulation (TTPSS) is a simulation methodology developed specifically to engage large student groups, is independent of specialist simulation learning environments, and is informed by educational theory. This simulation approach provides opportunities for students to actively engage in and critically reflect on practice-based situations where safe and quality patient care has the potential to be compromised and to develop skills, strategies and resilience that will prepare them to manage similar situations in practice.

Audience: All those working in simulation

The Challenging Debrief
Facilitators: Tess Vawser and Tom Hallahan
Organisation: Epworth HealthCare Victoria

Overview: Debriefing is an integral component of simulation. Not only does it facilitate open discussion in a safe environment, but it also allows analysis of the participants’ actions and allows the learner to reflect and make meaning of what occurred during the simulation. As debriefers, we aim to create safe challenging learning environments for the participants but sometimes find ourselves in challenging debriefing situations ourselves. This workshop will explore common debriefing challenges, and provide an opportunity for participants to practice, with instructive feedback. Workshop objectives Reflect and discuss challenging debriefing situations Develop an understanding of contributing factors to a difficult situation Identify some techniques to address challenging debriefing situations Practice debriefing in a simulated environment

Audience: All those working in simulation

Simulation in mental health education: critical considerations for getting started
Facilitator: Louise Alexander
Organisation: Australian Catholic University

Overview: Teaching mental health conditions and interactions can be difficult using traditional didactic methods.  Simulated patients can provide a unique and engaging learning opportunity in teaching mental health interviewing skills, therapeutic interaction and presentation of symptoms.  This workshop will provide guidance on developing mental health simulation with simulated patients, that align to your particular learning outcome needs.

Audience: All those working in health and community services

Moulage in Healthcare Simulation and Medical Terminology
Facilitators: Tom Hallahan and Tess Vawser
Organisation: Victorian Simulation Alliance & Epworth Hospital

Overview: Realism in simulation is something highly sought after by simulation educators to ensure engagement of learners and the fidelity of scenarios. This workshop will introduce you to simple and cost-effective techniques of moulage as applied to healthcare simulations. It will provide you with many useful ‘tips and tricks’ and introduce you to commonly used medical terms that may be unfamiliar to non-clinical staff.

Audience: All those working in simulation

An Introduction to Case Studies, Role-Play and Simulation in the Health and Community Services
Facilitator: A/Prof Debra Kiegaldie
Organisation: Victorian Simulation Alliance, Holmesglen Institute & Healthscope Australia

Overview: Simulation as a teaching method is well established in the healthcare sector but is relatively new in community services. A simulation can start as a simple written case study to reflect a problem situation from life or be a role-play where learners can take on their own role or that of another person similar to real life. An immersive simulation is a scenario that includes a manikin or trained simulated participant (either a client, family member or professional worker). Regardless of the type, all simulations evoke aspects of the real world in an interactive fashion where there are high levels of engagement on the part of the learner. This introductory workshop will provide you with the opportunity to increase your knowledge of the scope of simulation methods that can be used within health, community and social services teaching.

Audience: All those new to simulation in health and community services
