Have you heard that "If you've got 'em back, keep 'em back"? Well, that certainly is an option when you receive a drive from your opponents at the baseline. But while a solid deep volley means that your opponents probably can't do much damage, you're hitting the ball right back to them and giving them a chance to whack it again or to re-set the point with a drop.

An alternative to a deep volley is a soft drop volley that lands gently in the kitchen. By removing the speed from the ball and giving it a little bit of an arc, you can make your opponents desperately chase this crowd-pleasing shot.

The key to the drop volley is very limited paddle movement (aka keeping the paddle 'quiet'). If you want to take away speed, you best not have any forward swing at all. A soft, catching feeling can be your ticket to volley greatness. But watch out -- a little too soft and you're in the net, a little too hard or high and you're eating plastic for lunch. This is a high risk, high reward proposition!

From the Archives: 7 Pickleball Myths
Like any activity, pickleball has its fair share of beliefs about the 'right' way to do things. Whether it is "forehand takes the middle" or "you should never miss your serve", these axioms grow slowly over time and become solidified in the way some of us think about the game.

But perhaps we should re-think some of our assumptions about the best way to do things. That's exactly what we did in this classic article...
