"As practice shows"

I had an interesting conversation with a cab driver recently.

He first caught my attention by having a sticker on the dashboard of the car saying "Free Bottled Water".

I was wondering whether it's a new policy by his respective cab company, but he was quick to point out that it was his own initiative from the time he started working 17 years ago.

Being a hot summer day I told him that it was a great idea and that people most likely enjoy grabbing the unexpected gift to cool themselves off.

"People use it more during the winter," he said.

"What, really?" I was surprised, guessing that more water would be consumed during warmer days.

"As practice shows..." he started his sentence and went on to explain the reasons for that.

"During the summer people are more conscious about water and usually carry one with them, whereas in the winter the surprise factor (and the value of it) is greater and a nice room temperature beverage is much more appreciated."

It's those types of insights that can only be generated through experience and being a practitioner of one's craft.

I find it an important skill to be able to stick to your lane and provide opinions based on realities that you've experienced yourself.

It's also important to be able to detect and filter out sources of information that might be giving opinions which are not derived from being in the position of practitionership.

In short, I changed my perception, previously backed by a guess, with one backed by practice.

You can't argue with "As practice shows".
