Life-changing psychoanalytic training / Collegial community: Join SDPC
How Can Psychoanalysis Change Your Life?

Here is what SDPC members say:

"The decision to enter psychoanalytic treatment and training was one of the best I ever made. Thirty years later, the multifaceted world of psychoanalysis remains exceptionally gratifying. I have received invaluable training in developing and maintaining a deepening therapeutic process with a diverse range of patients, enabling me to sustain an emotionally rewarding practice - even in the age of managed care."

"In a larger and relational sense, the psychoanalytic community has been like an extended family for me. A bit like my own small town in which I have made lifelong friends."

"I felt welcomed by each member I met both during classes and events organized by  SDPC. A few members worked with me to understand which program would fit me best."

Inaugural Regional Workshop from
APsaA’s Department of Psychoanalytic Education

DPE Regional Workshops are designed for educators and students as well as mental health professionals looking to applying psychoanalytic ideas to deepen their knowledge and skills through exposure to experts in the field. In its efforts to promote excellence in psychoanalytic education, the DPE sponsors these regional workshops on important and/or controversial issues in psychoanalytic education annually in different regions of the United States.

Join us on Saturday, September 22nd at the New Center for Psychoanalysis in Los Angeles for the inaugural workshop.

Most mental health professionals learned how to supervise by emulating their best supervisors and avoiding identification with those they regarded as not so helpful. In this workshop, entitled Beginning and Never Endings: Supervision and Consultation in Clinical Practice, analysts and other mental health professionals will gather for a stimulating daylong workshop to share various points of view on supervision and on being supervised. Experts will make formal presentations that will seek to capture contemporary thinking on this linchpin of clinical education.

This conference is open to all and will be of particular interest for Institute faculty and Candidates.

Opening Plenary: Supervising and being Supervised
Dr. Gabbard will speak about the two-person psychology of supervision in keeping with a contemporary relational perspective. Some of the issues he will touch on include the disparity between what really happens in an analytic hour and what is reported to the supervisor; skewing the clinical material to what one thinks the supervisor wants to hear; the trainee’s need to take care of the supervisor; the lack of clarity in the border between supervision and treatment; how the evaluative role of the supervisor affects the discourse; and the difference between consultation and supervision.
CE credits: 1.5

After attending this session participants should be able to:
1. Describe how the evaluative nature of supervision influences what the supervisee brings up.
2. Explain how consultation and supervision differ.

Coffee Break

11:15 a.m. –12:00 noon
Interview: Dr. Howard Bacal by Dr. Richard Tuch
Dr. Bacal is an experienced and internationally renowned clinical analyst, teacher, and supervisor. This interview will reach back into history to explore how his supervision by psychoanalytic luminaries, most notably Donald Winnicott, shaped his ideas about and approach to supervision. In particular, Winnicott’s ideas about the importance of the dyad contributed to Dr. Bacal’s relational emphasis and shift away from the traditional, hierarchical model in which the supervisor/expert teaches the candidate/neophyte. This more relational approach leads to a focus on the interaction between supervisor and supervisee and away from an emphasis on the transmission of intellectual content.
CE credits: 1.5

After attending this session participants should be able to:
  1. Discuss how Winnicott’s dyad model shaped Dr. Bacal’s more relational approach.
  2. Describe how a relational model facilitates the supervisees learning

12:45 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Lunch

2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Panel: The Supervisory Matrix: A Multidimensional View
The panelists will explore issues and dilemmas that can occur in supervision and consultation, from the points of view of supervisees, supervisors and members of consultation groups. From these different points of view the panel will discuss issues that include; ethical issues that can arise during supervision; countertransference dilemmas and their impact on supervision and consultation; supervision enactments; and working through difficult interactions. Through this discussion the panel will provide attendees with a range of best practices for supervision and consultation in clinical practice.
CE credits: 2

After attending this session participants should be able to:

  1. Identify various ethical issues, and potential countertransference dilemmas that might impact supervision and consultation.
    1. Develop strategies to keep supervision or consultation on track after difficult interactions.

NYPSI's 1031st Scientific Program Meeting:
Archival Footage of Ellis Toney and Ralph Greenson Discussing Their Cross-Racial Psychoanalysis (1976)

with Anton Hart, Ph.D.
Film Screening & Discussion:
Archival Footage of Ellis Toney and Ralph Greenson Discussing Their Cross-Racial Psychoanalysis (1976)
Post-film Discussant: Anton Hart, Ph.D.

Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at 8 pm
New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute
247 East 82nd Street, NYC (btwn 2nd and 3rd Aves)

In 1976, Gail Wyatt, Ph.D., of UCLA, brought together Drs. Ralph Greenson and Ellis Toney, former analyst and analysand, respectively, to discuss the psychoanalytic work they had completed together more than 25 years before, when Dr. Toney was a candidate at the Los Angeles Psychoanalytic Institute. Dr. Greenson was white and Dr. Toney was black, making theirs one of the earliest cross-racial training analyses, and the racial issues that this analytic dyad encountered were of their time, yet would persist into our present moment. This unique, archival footage of a panel presentation between the two offers an all-too-relevant glimpse into the challenges psychoanalysts may encounter as they try to address issues of race with their patients and with each other.
The screening will be introduced by Anton Hart, Ph.D., a member of the NYPSI Faculty, who will provide orientation to the video. After the 54-minute screening, Dr. Hart will engage audience members in reflective discussion of what they have seen.
2 CME/CE credits will be offered.
General Admission: $25
Student Admission: $15

Psychic Survival in the Face of Misogyny: The Dialectic between the Internal and External Glass Ceiling

I am on the planning committee for a conference entitled taking place November 9-10 in Los Angeles. Through this convening, we will be looking at misogyny from a psychoanalytic perspective, that is, from the interface between the internal world and the external one.  I would welcome your participation in this exciting program which will examine negative attitudes towards gender in culture (including media, entertainment and politics) but through a psychoanalytic lens.  The goal is that, as psychoanalysts, we might be able to contribute to the current conversation in the community beyond our couches.

I have attached Save the Date (Friday, Nov.9 and Saturday, Nov. 10). The program details are in the link below at:

www.cowapla.eventbrite.com

Please feel free to forward to friends and colleagues and students of all genders and ages.  We would love to get a great group from the San Diego area. Do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.

Thank you for your attention and I hope to see you at the conference.

Sincerely,

Susan L. Donner, M.D.
Member of the Conference Committee for International Psychoanalytic Association’s
