New Case Example: Building and Scaling a Premier Children's Hospital

In a two-part series in their Forbes.com column, Bill Meehan and Kim Jonker recently profiled the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford and Stanford Children’s Health.
Meehan and Jonker discuss the elements of strategic leadership that have resulted in Packard Children’s tremendous success. Drawn through conversations with Christopher Dawes, who served as president and CEO for nearly two decades, and Susan Packard Orr, noted philanthropist and long-time board member of Packard Children’s, the article offers insights on the means by which the hospital built up and scaled impact over decades, coming “from nowhere” to become one of the top children’s hospitals in the country. Said Orr, “Through the amazing network that Chris Dawes developed, Packard Children’s has been able to scale its impact in an outsized way, disproportionately greater than the size of its organization and physical plant.”

Earning the Right to Scale

Writing for the Stanford Social Innovation Review, Bill Meehan and Kim Jonker offer their take on a much-discussed topic in the social sector – scaling. Meehan and Jonker developed the Engine of Impact Diagnostic, allowing organizations to self-assess their mastery of the seven essentials, and determine whether they are ready to scale.

#ICYMI: Engine of Impact in New York

Bill Meehan and Kim Jonker recently spoke at the 92 St Y in New York, offering insights on the leadership essentials necessary to achieve impact in the nonprofit sector. The discussion was moderated by Kathy Spahn, CEO of the award-winning nonprofit Helen Keller International. Olympic Gold Medalist Maya DiRado introduced the speakers and shared reflections of how Engine of Impact had influenced her own journey into the social sector.
"Strategic leadership is an approach that combines fact-based problem-solving with a rigorous focus on execution. In practice, it requires that organizations not only do good work, but also work in a highly intentional and effective way."
