Blogging as a Tool for Student Empowerment and Civic Voice

This month we are featuring the stories of three educators from Oakland, California - Nina Portugal, Jason Muniz, and Jo Paraiso - who actively use blogging to empower their students. Check out this CERG video to watch Nina, Jason, and Jo implement a blogging lesson in their classrooms and to hear them discuss how blogging increases the civic voice of their students. You can also click on the links below to read Nina and Jason's blog posts detailing which platforms they use, how they structure their lessons, and what they've learned in the process.

Confronting the Monster Under the Bed: Integrating Blogging into the Classroom

"One lesson I learned in my battle with blogging is that students will take the task seriously if both the task and the audience are authentic." -Nina Portugal
Integrating "How-To" Videos to Empower Student Learning

"Replacing the question, 'How do I do that?' with moves that empower students to find answers for themselves, has freed me to support my class in meaningful ways without dedicating valuable time to process." -Jason Muniz
Our followers have spoken! Matthew Colley's video, "Encouraging Students to Take Action" was the most watched video on the Teaching Channel's Educating for Democracy Deep Dive last year. In case you missed it, here's your chance to watch a real lesson in civic engagement.

The Civics Skills We Need: Summer Reading and Reflection for #DemocraticClassrooms

In this blog post, Heather explains how democratic classrooms can develop even when our values conflict, and why understanding the skills and ways of civic life is more important than ever.

In an effort to prepare our youth to learn about, engage with, and respond to complex civic and political issues effectively, the Teaching Channel and CERG partnered to create Deep Dive: Educating for Democracy. This collaboration resulted in a curated collection of videos accompanied by educational resources, blogs, and articles related to preparing youth for civic and political life in the digital age.
