GRETB Community Education
In Community Education learners identify their own learning needs and learn in informal settings within their own communities. Community Education offers community members a way to re/engage with learning, to support their health and wellbeing, to develop and strengthen themselves and their communities and to provide pathways to further education and employment. Dolores McSharry has recently joined the team with Galway and Roscommon Education and Training Board (GRETB) as Community Education Facilitator and she welcomes any enquiries in relation to Community Education in County Roscommon.
Towards the end of each year, Galway and Roscommon Education and Training Board (GRETB) call for applications from Community Groups. Support is provided to community groups in two ways – either by a community education grant or by the allocation of tuition hours to the group. Community Education courses usually run over a 6/8-week period for a couple of hours each week. Courses can include, but are not limited to Art & Crafts, Hair & Beauty, Cookery Skills, Gardening and Yoga etc. It is important that the community have identified what education course they would like to participate in themselves.
Calls for applications are advertised in the local papers, through the Roscommon Public Participation Network and on www.gretb.ie.  If you would like to be registered with GRETB to be notified of the call for funding, please call Dolores McSharry, Community Education Facilitator on 090 6634189.

Consultations

Research on the Experiences of Citizens During Storm Emma

The emergency management research group at DCU Business School want to hear how individuals and communities coped during Storm Emma (combined with what was referred to as “The Beast from the East”). We are hoping that the National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management, the Department of Defence – OEP, and the Department of Rural and Community Development will use the results of the study to inform policy and planning for the future.

The next meeting for the Roscommon Environmental Network will take place on
August 11th, 2pm at Mount Plunkett Nature Reserve.
The day will begin with a tour of Mount Plunkett Nature Reserve at 2pm. Following the tour, we will sit down to a meeting to continue to plan the future of Roscommon Environmental Network.
In 2005, Padraig Corcoran and his family began to implement biodiversity projects on their farm of 40 acres, consisting of establishing new hedgerows, digging out wildlife ponds, erecting bird and bat boxes and removing 10 acres of encroachment scrub on the wetlands to provide a suitable nesting habitat for breeding waders (Snipe, Lapwing and Corncrake).
The reserve now provides a perfect habitat to numerous species of animals such as barn owls, kestrel, lapwing, kingfisher, pheasants, ducks, frogs, badgers and many more!
The reserve is based in Lecarrow, Co. Roscommon on the N61, 17 km. north of Athlone. You can keep up to date on the meeting through the Roscommon Environmental Network Facebook page.

Welcome to From Images to Words: an exhibition in Ballaghaderreen library

From images to words’ is the name of the exhibition to be held in Ballaghaderreen library from 9 to 22 August. The exhibition is organised by the Community Art Group Ballaghaderreen and the Ballaghaderreen Writers Group.

The writers took inspiration from the work of the members of the Art Group. Their poems and short stories will be shown alongside the visual art, bringing fresh perspectives and depth to the images.

The Art Group and Writers Group are delighted to have Mary Gallagher, local business woman and a writer and visual artist herself, opening the exhibition. This will take place on Thursday 9 August at 18.00. The writers will read from their work.

The exhibition will be on view during the opening hours of the library, which can be found on the square in Ballaghaderreen. This is a great opportunity to see the work of the two local groups. Most of the visual art works are for sale, at affordable prices. Both groups are open to new members from Ballaghaderreen and further afield.

Don't  forget.........
