Farewell to Paddy
This month sees the Archdeacon of Hereford, the Venerable Paddy Benson swap rural Herefordshire for the city of Leeds and retirement.
As well as the specific responsibilities of being an archdeacon, Paddy has taken an active interest in our diocesan link with Tanzania and nearer home the forming of a Community Land Trust, to help tackle the lack of affordable housing in our diocese.
The Bishop of Hereford, the Rt Revd Richard Frith has wished Paddy well and said: “All of us in the diocese have reason to be thankful to Paddy for his ministry.
“He is passionate about the Christian good news, warmly pastoral in his dealings with others, immensely hard working and a very gifted communicator of the Christian faith.
“We shall miss him greatly."
After retiring, Archdeacon Paddy and his wife Eleanor plan to move nearer one of their children. “Our daughter asked us to join her church,” Paddy said. “She said, ‘Mum and Dad, we need some old people in the congregation’.”
His successor, Revd Derek Chedzey will be licensed at Hereford Cathedral on Sunday 9 September.

Parish Safeguarding Handbook
The Church of England Safeguarding team has released a new quick and easy guide to all you need to know about safeguarding in a parish.
Primarily aimed at incumbents and Parish Safeguarding Officers it will also be useful to anyone involved in church life. There are specific sections to support PCCs and leaders of activities for children, young people and/or adults who may be vulnerable.
Diocesan Safeguarding Training dates
- Saturday 6 October - Foundation and Leadership in Safeguarding 9.30am-3.30pm –Hereford
- Saturday 13 October – Foundation and Leadership in Safeguarding 9.30-3.30pm – Ludlow
- Wednesday 24 October – Foundation and Leadership in Safeguarding 9.30-3.30pm – Hereford
- Wednesday 21 November – Foundation and leadership in Safeguarding 9.30-3.30pm – Hereford
- Saturday 24 November – Foundation and leadership in Safeguarding 9.30-3.30pm – Ludlow.
Diocesan Safeguarding Adviser, Mandy McPhee is also available to deliver Safeguarding training to your PCC in your parish. The session lasts just over two hours. If you are interested please get in touch with Mandy directly.

Generation Next is the name of our Autumn events season aimed at supporting people to become more confident about sharing their Christian faith, and to consider taking on a leadership role within their church community. Please do give thought to attending and sharing this information with fellow congregation members.

Diocesan staff and members of the Diocesan Board of Education have gathered at the Bishop's Palace to wish Diocesan Director of Education, Philip Sell all the best for his retirement. We thank him for his years of service to the children and families served by our church schools.

Cathedral is 140th member of Parish Giving Scheme
Hereford Cathedral has become the latest church in the Diocese of Hereford to join the Parish Giving Scheme (PGS). The decision comes ahead of a full Giving Renewal Programme at the Cathedral in September, led by the Dean of Hereford, the Very Revd Michael Tavinor.
Donations made through the PGS scheme are made via Direct Debit, streamlining the process for parishes. These can be made on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis. Each donation is restricted to a parish church.
Speaking of the signing, Parish Giving Adviser, Richard Jones said: "The Parish Giving Scheme has been transforming the finances of churches within the diocese allowing them to grow and develop vital work within their communities still further and on a larger scale at Hereford Cathedral this impact could be considerable and hugely exciting."

Digital support from the central Church
A new hub of resources, news and events to support digital evangelism and digital discipleship has been launched by the Church of England, known as Digital Labs.
It consists of three areas:
- Labs Learning: A continuation of the social media training courses (two sessions of these were held in Hereford Diocese last year) and a blog
- Labs Live: An annual event for Christian creatives
- Labs Latest: A monthly email newsletter filled with digital hints, tips and good practice

The cathedral and some of our Hereford churches are venues for the Three Choirs Festival (28 August - 4 August). Thank you to all those involved in setting up the buildings for events and welcoming visitors.

New training college name
The West of England Ministerial Training Course (WEMTC) has been renamed Cuddesdon: Gloucester and Hereford (CGH). It covers the non-residential theological training for ordinands, Readers, interns and independent students.

A new Rural Dean has been appointed for the Hereford Deanery (City and Rural).
Revd Neil Patterson will take on the role from 1 August while also continuing as Diocesan Director of Vocations and Ordinands. Read more.

Congratulations to Revd Phill Brown who has been licensed Priest in Charge of the Benefice of Burghill (Burghill and Tillington, Stretton Sugwas, Moreton-on-Lugg and Pipe-cum-Lyde). Please pray for Phill's ministry, his family and the church communities. Phill was previously Team Vicar at St Martin's in Hereford (South Wye).

We welcome Revd Luci Morriss to Hereford Diocese. She has joined Abbeydore Deanery as Rural Pioneer Priest and Priest in Charge for the Borderlink Parishes (Cusop with Blakemere, Bredwardine with Brobury, Clifford, Dorstone, Hardwicke, Moccas and Preston-on-Wye). We are excited to see the Deanery Mission Team getting underway.

Fancy a spot of cricket?
The first Diocesan cricket match between the Hereford and Ludlow Archdeaconries takes place on Saturday 8 September. At least 50% of each team is made up of serving Diocesan clergy. Bishop Richard will be one of the umpires and Diocesan Director of Vocations and Ordinands and Rural Dean of Hereford, Revd Neil Patterson will be keeping the score. The match is taking place at Goodrich Cricket Club, starting at 12pm with a bar, tea and bbq available.

Choir robes anyone?
St Peter's in Hereford has a number of choir robes that are looking for a new home. There are 11 for ladies and 12 for men/boys in a dark crimson polyester. If you are interested in these please contact Peter or Janet Strevens.
