Austin Peay yesterday formally introduced former Tennessee senior leader Harrison as the school's 14th AD. In discussing what made the position attractive to him, Harrison noted that the "first thing is the opportunity for growth. I see what [Prez] White has done with the university, I see where the athletic department has gone. I feel like there's another trajectory." One focus during White's tenure has been on diversity, an issue Harrison also plans to emphasize, saying that "I believe it's important our athletic department reflects the student body here at Austin Peay. So, we want to be equally as diverse." In broader terms, Harrison discussed his vision during his remarks at the press conference, saying, in part: "Beyond the challenges and opportunities of college athletics, this department will operate with integrity, energy and a passion for the student-athlete and fan experience. We will be good citizens and partners of this campus, this community, this state and college athletics as a whole. Today, we see no borders -- we will be daring in all that we do. I expect us to raise the bar." (link, link); Presser video here. (link)
Executive-level Leadership Moves: The Pac-12 has named former UC Davis Interim AD Gould senior assoc commish for sports management and institutional services, effective Aug 6. Gould will oversee sports administration and championships for Pac-12 WBB and all Olympic sports, manage governance and compliance issues and serve as the conference’s SWA. Commish Scott: "Teresa is a leader who has driven results at both the university and conference level for student-athletes, coaches and administrators, and who will bring a level of knowledge and passion to the Pac-12 that will help us achieve new heights." (link); Maryland has named Sorem deputy AD, taking over a similar set of responsibilities to those handled by AD Evans before his ascension to the top spot. Evans called Sorem a "rising star" and said he's "confident that her innovative thinking and passion for Maryland will lead to great success." (link); Connecticut has named Swinney COO and SWA, succeeding Goetz, who was recently named AD at Ball State. Swinney most recently served as deputy AD at UNC-Wilmington. (link); Washington State has announced that Blair will begin serving as senior assoc AD for administration, effective Aug 13. Blair will also serve as administrator for FB, tennis and track & field while also overseeing student-athlete development and well-being. Blair has spent the last four years at Rice, where he served as senior assoc AD for sports administration and compliance. (link); Nevada has promoted Mitchell to the post of senior assoc AD for intercollegiate services and special assistant to Prez Johnson. Mitchell had been serving as senior assoc AD for compliance. Northwestern announces a $10M gift from university trustee & alum Combe to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of AD Phillips's tenure in Evanston. The AD chair for the Wildcats will now be known as "Combe Family VP for Athletics & Recreation" with the $10M to be "a perpetual source of funding for the vice president to pursue important projects and address new opportunities." Combe: "Jim Phillips exemplifies all that is good about Northwestern Athletics. He is as caring for his 500 true scholar-athletes as he is for his own dear family. Jim and his outstanding 19 head coaches know academics and character building come before athletic excellence, though under his leadership we have achieved all three!" (link); Here's the three-plus minute #Homegrown video on Phillips's time leading NU. As the Department of Justice continues its probe into MBB, Yahoo's Forde and Thamel have identified five questions they characterize as biggest moving forward. First, they address the question of why things are "so quiet" since the initial "bombshells" that resulted in, among other things, Louisville parting ways with Rick Pitino. They quote a person close to one of three upcoming trials as saying: "It's not going to be over for at least 11 months. If anyone is convicted, then you're looking at two or three more years for appeals." Concerning a perceived lack of action from the NCAA, Forde and Thamel posit that "investigators have essentially been benched by the legal system." Therefore, their investigatory scope is limited and significant enforcement tied to some of these cases may take another year. Moving forward, questions still remain about whether the NCAA (or the public) will ever be made aware of exactly what inculpatory evidence federal investigators have obtained, and if so (and perhaps, even if not), are NCAA enforcement officials equipped to deal with the investigation's scope. ACC Commish Swofford says it may depend on what the feds turn over. "If they turn over information that’s signed, sealed and delivered, then the answer is yes. If they don’t, it’s difficult. It’s difficult from the NCAA’s standpoint." Finally, regarding what comes next, Forde and Thamel "expect another flurry of activity" but promise little in the way of clarity. "In reality, little has changed on the summer recruiting circuit and in the coaching environment." (link)
Freshly minted USF AD Kelly is ready to officially get started next week. In a letter to Bulls supporters Kelly says he's spent most of July communicating with HCs to learn about them, their programs and what challenges they face. He's also spent time connecting with alumni, fans and donors as he prepares to "do my part in elevating our university." He adds: "As I said at my introductory press conference, we will build tradition one champion at a time. Great things are in store for USF Athletics and I want you all to be a part of it." (link); According to a recently completed feasibility study, USF should prioritize fundraising for a $40M FB Center before it leaps into tackling the issue of building an on-campus stadium. The report, compiled by Convention Sports and Leisure International, also dismissed the idea of building a stadium comparable to UCF's, instead advising the Bulls to remain at Raymond James Stadium until the school has revenue to to fund a 35K-seat, state-of-the-art stadium with various premium seating options -- something similar to Colorado State's $240M venue. Kelly: "It's feasible now if we're willing to settle for a lesser product. But the feedback says if we're going to do it, we do it right...go big or go home. There are a lot of schools that play football at this level that don't have anything close to Raymond James Stadium." (link)
In follow-up to his reorganization moves late last week, Arkansas AD Yurachek, "I want to be clear that I don't think the department was broken when I got here. I think Jeff had done some really, really good things in his leadership of this athletic department during his tenure. What I'm looking to do now is take this department to the next level. I think we have the people in place here that can help us do that. […] I really come in with a blank canvas and give everyone a chance to prove themselves and understand how the department is going to be set up. It's never really been my style to come in and say, 'Hey, I've got to have this person from my past in this role.'" A bit more. (link)
Yahoo's Forde has highlighted 40 things to know about the 2018 FB schedule, with observations ranging from field surface to coaches who may find themselves on the hot seat. Regarding the latter, Forde contends that North Carolina HC Fedora may be one of the first to receive scrutiny should UNC struggle in its first two games, both on the road against Cal and East Carolina, respectively. Forde also points out that this will mark the first time in 20 years that Michigan will have started and ended the season with true road games. The Wolverines open against Notre Dame and close with Ohio State. Speaking of true road games, Iowa, Illinois and Auburn will go the deepest into 2018 without facing an opponent away (all three play on the road October 6). Also of note, BYU and Utah will end the season with the Holy War for the first time since 2010. Lots more. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Kids around the world from ages 7-70 are playing Fortnite, and college FB players are no exception, according to USA Today's Myerberg, who reports that the cooperative video game is "in players' lounges, in apartments, in hot tubs and in cold tubs, on buses, on cell phones," etc. Maryland OL Gray and Michigan DE Winovich, Myerberg points out, will "meet on October 6 when the Wolverines and Terrapins clash. ... Until then, however -- and very likely after -- Gray and Winovich match wits on Fortnite." Gray adds: "Two big six-foot-five dudes out here playing Xbox," competing online before they compete in person. While some say the game is just a natural extension of a competitor's desire to compete, others, like Pittsburgh OL Bookser, observe that it's a way to unwind: "Fortnite is when you can yell at people for messing up and not feel bad about it. If you blow it in Fortnite, you can get ripped by everybody and no one feels bad about it." (link)

"Integrative Performance Excellence Group" is the label Duke has put on a cohort of leaders, chaired by Executive Director of Athletic Medicine Zarzour, who will "enhance the experience of Duke student-athletes by providing an integrative approach to the care of each individual athlete throughout his or her collegiate career" via collaboration with coaches "to generate individual student-athlete excellence plans." Make-up of the group includes reps from Sports Performance, Athletic Medicine, Sports Nutrition & Behavioral Health, psychological services, plus team & primary care physicians. A notable member of the IPEG is new Director of Behavioral Health Zeplin, who arrives in Durham from Auburn, where he was a Clinical & Sport Psychologist. (link)
The Athletic's Ubben sorted through hundreds of emails that arrived in the inbox of former Tennessee AD Currie in connection to the FB HC search last winter. Not all were negative on the potential hire of Ohio State DC Schiano, like Vols fan Jeske-Polyak, "I felt so bad for the guy. Everybody tends to write letters in trying to sway. Even when you write to your congressman, it’s always the bad stuff that gets you up in arms. I felt bad for the guy and wanted to say, 'Hey, there’s somebody out here that supports you.'" Ubben notes how 14 other names appeared more in the emails than new HC Pruitt as suggestions for Currie to hire, led by Florida Atlantic boss & former UT leader Kiffin at 160 "votes." (link)
The Daily Press's Teel goes in on the likely carriage waiting game that faces the ACC Network's linear launch this time next year. Teel notes some cloudy skies (namely, Comcast-Fox-BTN) that could be a further indicator of challenges ahead for ESPN & the ACC, also reminds on the timeline of deals for the SEC Network that included Comcast, Time Warner (now Charter), DirecTV, Mediacom & Verizon Fios all within the last month before going live, or, in Fios' case, after actual launch. ACC Commish Swofford previously stated carriage negotiations are "right on schedule," but also such conversions are "a tough world." (link)
Pac-12 FB HCs argue the new redshirt rule should be especially useful for freshmen/young quarterbacks who might get a taste of real game action - something that can't be replicated anyway else - without having to burn a year of eligibility. Oregon State's Smith: "I don’t think it’s going to be that easy to get them all four (games), but there will probably be a game or two. But the in-game experience for a kid is valuable. It really is. It’s totally different than the scout team and practice. There’s some real value there." Stanford boss Shaw echoes Smith. (link); Conference USA HCs on the same topic. Florida International's Davis: "What the new redshirt rules does is gives you a cushion. If you need to stick someone in to be a backup to play 15 to 20 plays, in games five, six or seven, you can do that. The new rule alleviates a lot of problems." North Texas's Littrell also notes how it's easy for a redshirt to "check out" for the season, but now coaches can dial up the engagement meter. (link)
Former Louisville MBB HC Pitino marks September 4th for the date his memoir will be released & tell his entire side of the story. Diversion Books is the publisher (holy smokes the irony). (link); The lawsuit between Pitino & the university continues with neither side looking like it's interested in a settlement. Here's a timeline. (link)
More Personnel: Louisiana Monroe AD Floyd now has a new university administrator with whom to work in Chief Administrative Officer McDonald, who will "help oversee the athletic department" as a portion of his duties for Prez Bruno. McDonald has a banking background & Floyd says it's not at all abnormal for an AD to work through a CFO-type much of the time. (link); Delaware AD Rawak hires former Marshall Softball HC Steele to the same role in Newark. (link); Middle Tennessee State AD Massaro will make yet another HC hire as Women Tennis boss Ramsay resigns. (link); Watch: Purdue is using its FB coaching staff, including HC Brohm, in videos to help sell tickets. (link); Twitter has a new Head of U.S. Sports in TJ Adeshola, who slides up from leading all partnerships with major sports leagues. (link); Pretty interesting read from ESPN's Rittenberg on the professions of some former FB ACs around the nation, including those who have gone into oil, fast food, cannabis & the ministry. (link)
How can leaders protect their time, yet still empower their teams? From notable productivity author & speaker Thomas: 1) Mentor in hindsight; 2) Create boundaries for decision-making; 3) Have regular meetings with direct reports and designated times for others; and, 4) Be available less often. Thomas, in closing, "For leaders to effectively manage attention, you need to be able to balance interruptions with availability to your team. Employing these four strategies is a step on the path to the ultimate goal of attention management: the opportunity to achieve more of the results that are significant to you, and also have undistracted thinking time, so that you can be the visionary thinker that your leadership position demands." (link)

The Dallas Morning News' Baby with a trio of articles right down our alley, starting with North Texas FB spending the least in the state among DI peers on recruiting (just $175K). HC Littrell notes the obvious geographic advantages for the Mean Green, adds, "Sometimes you can have all the little bells and whistles that looks really good and feels really good and all that but gets you nowhere. It has nothing to do with winning football games. At the end of the day, it's still about the relationships, taking care of your student-athletes and having the resources that you need to make sure you can be successful." (link); Baby inks on Houston's push to gain 'Power 5' traction, notes increased donations levels (+350%) from 2009 as industry kingpin Neinas comments, "The problem that Houston has is simple. Right now, they gotta wait until somebody wants to expand so Houston will get another chance to show what they've done." (link); Lastly, on UTSA's addition of FB & if it's paying off. I can't get behind the wall this time, but there's also perspective from UT Arlington AD Baker on the Mavs potentially going in on FB. More. (link)
Sports gambling is officially live in Mississippi. Three keys for Southern Miss AD Gilbert: 1) Education ("We’ve got to be mindful and do a good job of educating our student-athletes. We’ve got to educate our coaches, educate our staff. Largely, we have to educate the university community."); 2) Vigilance ("We have to be there every day. We’ve got to be mindful of what the risks are and know that vigilance is going to be important."); and, 3) Presence from administration ("It’s being visible, being compliant and making sure our compliance office and myself are ringing that bell every day of how important it is to be compliant and keep the integrity of the game intact.") Gilbert also points to some relationships that he wants to build with casino leaders who are now closely connected to sport. (link)
Longwood AD Austin points to alignment with the Big South as crucial to the Lancers' successful transition from the independent ranks back in 2012, "It’s worked out marvelously […] And to be honest, it’s matched up because of the type of institutions we are. We’re all smaller institutions and we all fit with the type of schools in the league." Longwood Prez Reveley adds more context to the relationship, "In an era in which athletic conferences tend not to be very cohesive geographically, the Big South really is. The rivalries and travel fits very naturally with work in the classroom. That sounds like it’s just a detail, but it’s a great thing. I’m one of the handful of presidents in the country who was a D-I student-athlete myself (at Princeton). I really do in my bones know how hard it is to juggle a D-I season and a semester." (link); Sticking in the Big South, here's High Point's 2017-18 Annual Report. (link)
Missouri State AD Moats notes the importance of a new indoor FB facility for the Bears, "From a recruiting standpoint, others in the conference have one. We need to at least try and put people on equal bases." If Illinois State moves forward with a similar project that's been reported, only MSU, Southern Illinois, Indiana State & Western Illinois FB programs would be without within the MVFC. Moats says the cost would be in the $5M to $8M range. (link); South Alabama supporters are pushing Mobile leaders to allow a vote on the cash needed to build a new FB stadium. (link)
Penn's Champions Club surged past its FY18 fundraising goal of $18.7M, stacking a total of $23.4M from over 5,200 donors. Endowment gifts totaled $13.4M, $5M more than the previous category high. (link); Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun Athletic Foundation also topped charts at $12.4M, $1.6M more than FY17. AD Maggard: "Growing our resources will continue to be a focus moving forward as we prioritize graduating our student-athletes and positioning them to compete for and win championships." (link)
Also Noticed: West Virginia Prez & former Ohio State leader Gee on the allegations surrounding late team physician Strauss, "I have no reason to know that I’ve ever even met Dr. Strauss. And certainly I cannot remember any allegations at that time. You know, I have a very clear track record of, whenever I hear about allegations, I look into them immediately." Gee also says he's been interviewed by OSU's independent council. (link); Interesting thread from 247's Snow on games MBB staffs might play in the prospective student-athlete nomination process for summer events if we move in that direction. Of note, don't expect coaches to nominate all their targets in the hopes of keeping some below the radar. (link); The Oakland A's are ready to roll-out a 2019 season ticket plan that doesn't come with a consistent assigned seat. Flexibility at its finest. (link); FloSports announces a deal with Eleven Sports US that includes New Mexico State FB games & Big Sky MBB tips. (link); If your student-athletes need even more examples of how questionable social media comments can come back to haunt them, look no further than the Washington Nationals' Turner & Atlanta Braves' Newcomb. (link, link); Looks like Louisville & James Madison will meet on the gridiron in 2022. (link)
