Celebrating World Breastfeeding Week August 1 - August 7

Polo Health is proud to support women through the challenges and rewards of breastfeeding. We have our very own in-house breastfeeding specialist, Dr. Steph Peltz, who, in addition to being a naturopathic physician is also a birth doula. Her passion lies in helping women and children achieve their optimal health through a myriad of services. Check out her introduction video on our website to learn more in her own words!

If you are curious about or need support with breastfeeding, Dr. Peltz is available via in-person meetings or even on Skype - because sometimes being a mama of a tiny one makes it difficult to get around! Stay Cool & Protected In This Heat!

We don't need to tell you that we are in the middle of quite a heat wave! We've got some handy tips for you from our very own Dr. Andrew Eberding. Having grown up on a farm in B.C.'s Cariboo region, Dr. Eberding is well-versed with the natural world (which is one of the reasons he pursued a career in naturopathy - read more about that here!) and he has some great ideas on how to stay cool in this crazy heat.

Hydration – Of all the challenges of summer, this one is the most pressing.  Here are some things to know so you can stay fully hydrated.
  • Try to limit your water intake to ½ cup at a time (every 20 min) to maximize hydration.
  • If you are even moderately sweating over any period of time, you need to consider adding electrolytes to keep your internal fluids balanced and healthy. You can get pre-made powders or you can make your own.
1 cup water
1 cup coconut water
1/8 tsp Himalayan salt
1/2 tsp magnesium glycinate powder
1/4 cup juice

Avoid commercial brands (Gatorade, Powerade, etc), they are masquerading as healthy alternatives but are filled with additives that are far from health generating.
  • Consume larger amounts of fruits in the summer. They provide a better balance of what you need to replenish this time of year – cherries, peaches, nectarines, apricots, and berries specifically are great choices.
  • If you don’t gravitate toward water, consider iced herbal teas and infusions. When choosing teas, avoid ones that have additives including artificial or natural flavor.
  • When going out, take your water in inert containers like glass or stainless steel. Plastic containers, especially in the heat, will leach unhealthy components into your water; the softer the bottle, the more likely the plastic is getting into the water.
Sun Protection – Through the summer you probably are reminded about the need to use sunscreen every day. I hear all the time about concerns with respect to the contents in sunscreen. It is not possible to stay on top of the many components is in these products and why those ingredients have been included. Even as a health professional, it is very difficult to stay informed on these details. As with all cosmetic products, they include ingredients on the label, but that doesn’t really help as many are hidden in blanket terms. Here are a few things to know that can help you understand what products are best to use.
  • The farther out the expiry date, the more likely it contains chemical stabilizers that are going to absorb into your body.
  • If it contains water as its main ingredient, it definitely has a preservative in it and that is not there for your benefit but to provide lower production costs with potential undetermined health effects.
  • Parabens and “fragrance” (hides items such as phthalates) disrupt hormones and cause headaches and allergies in some people. If smell is important to you opt for scent free or essential oils scented instead. Research is showing that hormone disruptors are causing generational adverse effects.
  • Consider the brand and the company’s values, are they a health first company or a conglomerate dedicated to cornering market share. This can be difficult to know, but talk to health store staff about these concerns. They should be able to give you background on the companies that they distribute.Mainstream stores are less likely to provide you with this knowledge.
  • A mineral based product is going to be safer than a chemical based one, but expect to have a white sheen on your body when you are wearing it.
The Environmental Working Group website has done extensive research in the ecological (and health) effects of personal care products. Check out their website for reliable information at ewg.org

Tips For Getting Routine-Ready

We know, it's only the beginning of August. There's still another month of daylight stretching into evenings, travelling, summertime entertaining to enjoy! And we hope you make the most of it! We just thought we'd remind you of a few tricks you can try toward the end of this month so that when Labour Day weekend comes to an end, both children and adults in the home aren't totally thrown off course.
  • Incorporate some relaxing activities in the evening to help kids calm down. Quiet reading, lavender-infused baths, and a few minutes of cuddling in bed together bring the day to a close nicely.
  • Gradually bring bedtime back to the norm by getting your kids tucked in 15 minutes sooner each night. This process can take up to a week, depending on your child's body clock, so we suggest giving this a go at least 7 days before they need to be rising and sleeping early again.
  • Get your child in the habit of waking a little earlier each day - and send them outside as soon as possible! The sunshine on their skin will let their body know that THIS is the time for waking up and meeting the day.
  • For kids on gadgets, we recommend keeping hand-held devices out of the bedroom at night. Designate a charging area outside of the bedrooms, where every member of the family (adults included) deposits their devices for the night. This is important throughout the summer as well, but if things have become really laxed in this area over this season, it's especially important to nick this habit now.
  • If your child requires a little more help, or has some underlying conditions that make transitions difficult, our physician Dr. Andrew Eberding can certainly help - book a consult with him today!
