River City Rowing Club News - Summer 2018

RCRC Members and Friends,

A lot has happened in 2017-18. It was only a short year ago (August 2017) that the RCRC dock reopened for use. Since that time, we have hosted two regattas, a pancake breakfast, Pulling Together, parent rows, multiple Junior scrimmages, and countless Learn-to-Row classes. Our directors and coaches have truly made RCRC an exciting place, not only to row, but to connect with friends and build community.

We recently welcomed Ben Rogers and DeeAnne McCallin to the Board, bringing new ideas and enthusiasm to our Masters Membership and Junior Membership positions. Many thanks to Amanda Taylor for her dedication as Masters Membership Coordinator over the last four years. I am grateful for the expertise and continued service of each of our Board members.

For all of the efforts put in by staff and the Board, the club could not be successful without the generous investment of time and resources from each of our members and the greater RCRC community. I am consistently impressed by each person who goes above and beyond for RCRC. Thank you for striving to make our club the best it can be. I look forward to another great year of racing and events.

Go RCRC!

Aston Tennefoss

President, RCRC Board of Directors

MYSTIQUE  4x out for her first row

THE MYSTIQUE OF ROWING A QUAD
By Arthur Ericsson, Executive Director

Did you know that a 4x is only 4% off the pace of rowing’s fastest boat category, the coxed 8? World record times are 5:33.15 and 5:19.35 respectively. Quads are very fun; with only four rowers the boat goes extremely fast and with the symmetry of sculling, the set of the boat is usually not an issue. At the higher levels a coxswain is not typically used, which makes it that much easier to have a full lineup.

So when River City recently got a new quad it was a truly special day for the club.  The funds for the new boat came primarily from the generous $20k donation from longtime member Margo Miyashiro and her husband Robert.  Margo originally thought that she might donate enough to help the club get a new single or double, but when executive director Arthur Ericsson told her that what the club needed most was a quad, and suggested that her donation could be used as seed money towards this more expensive purchase, she came back a few days later with a new offer, “we want to donate twenty thousand dollars for my twenty years rowing at RCRC,” suggested Margo. With a new quad starting at $25k and additional upgrades and tax pushing the total towards $30k we were at least ⅔ of the way towards
our goal, and as part of a matching funds challenge to our membership during the

Big Day of Giving event the club reached the total fundraising goal.  A huge thank you to everyone who participated in BDOG for making this possible!

The boat was unveiled on the morning of June 15th, also revealing its name, MYSTIQUE. There were many members and supporters on hand to hear Margo’s inspiration for the donation. “My teammates over the years are like family to me and this is our way of honoring them and giving back to our club.”  Margo’s two daughters were also there, as well as her long time coach Raul Reynon. Two days later the boat was rowed for the first time.
The lineup was

  1. Lois Suder
  2. Raul Reynon

  3. Margo Miyashiro

  4. Deb Eernisse

It wasn’t just a ceremonial row;  Margo took them down to the palm tree, into rougher waters and some higher stroke rates on the way back. Despite it

Rowers and scullers from RCRC will be heading to Lake Merritt in Oakland for USRowing’s Masters Nationals Championships Aug 16-19.  Lake Merritt, a frequent host of the USRowing’s Southwest Masters Regional Champs, previously hosted the Masters National Champs  back in 2000. This year’s event will mark the first time that Masters National Champs have been held on the West Coast since 2008.  Over 100 clubs from more than 27 states in the U.S., as well as...

Middle School Rowing Program
By Glenn Miller, At-Large Junior Representative

The current version of RCRC’s middle school team got its start in 2015 with Coach Emily Neary and small groups of 9- 13 year old’s coming out, learning to row, and be fit in a fun and supportive environment.  From that start Holly Hopkins (our assistant director), and Erin MacDonald as an assistant, took over and built the group, turning it into a great program, with a learn to row course progressing to experienced rower sessions, running March through Nov. The team builds confidence,  fitness, and teaches the athletes what it means to be part of a larger community...

COOL HAPPENINGS AT THE PORT
By Bill Naddy, Facilities Director

Two City projects are nearing completion that will have a big impact on RCRC.
The first project has been taking place for over the last five years. Looking at the accompanying picture, taken from the RCRC dock and looking past UCD, many former members would not recognize this view of Lake Washington.  This area used to be filled with two dozen derelict barges, old sailboats, a sunken drydock, an old tug, plus a couple sunken sailboats. If you look closely you can still see one old boat hull in the center left. By the end of the year the last few remaining wrecks will have been removed and the lake restored.

Many thanks go to the City of West Sacramento for leading the work, the California Parks and Recreation Department Division of Boating and Waterways for providing the grants for the vessel removal, and to CalRecycle and the US Coast Guard for removing all the hazardous wastes stored on the barges. And the Division of Boating and Waterways is working with us to mitigate the aquatic weeds in the lake and around our docks!

The other project is more of a return to the past.  Long time members will remember driving in right at Harbor Blvd, coming through the Port security gate and driving straight down the hill to the club parking lot.  After 9/11 security concerns put a stop to that.
This picture is taken from the top of the upper parking lot looking straight towards Harbor Blvd
After years of having us drive past concrete recyclers, log yards, the labor training center and fire department training facility, the Port is creating a new road for us that will again use the Port's main entrance and jog slightly to the west to skirt the secure area. This will be a much shorter, straighter, better lit, pothole free entrance for all the boat clubs' members. The new entrance work is underway and intended to be in place prior to the start of this fall's junior season.
LEARNING to ROW!
By DeeAnne McCallin,
Juniors Membership Coorindator

As a new RCRC Board Member representing the Junior Team, I was interested in learning more about the sport of rowing this summer.  No better way than to sign up for the fourth of six 2018 Summer Adult Learn to Row sessions.

By the end of the first of nine classes, the adult beginning rower students, myself included, were well on their way to having a new vocabulary running through their minds:

Shell. Erging. At the finish. Arms and body only. Ready, up!  On Shoulders. Hold. Set. Starboard, port, bow, stern, outboard, inboard, stroke, bow pair, drive, catch - way enough!

Over nine classes spanning three weeks’ time, adults from the Sacramento, Davis, and surrounding communities have been learning how to row this summer. Participants experience sweep rowing in 8- person shells. Sweep rowing is where each rower has one oar, held with both hands, as opposed to sculling where one rows with two oars. Each session consists of lessons in which co-ed rowers learn the technique and execution of the rowing stroke, as well as rowing commands, boat handling, and the intricacies of crew dynamics.

Whether learn-to-rowers’ motivation to enroll was to improve conditioning, to learn a new sport, to get out to meet new people, or to do something out of their comfort zone, we quickly came to realize that we were all in the same boat between 5:15 a.m. and 7:15 a.m. (Mondays and Wednesdays; 8:00 a.m.–10:15 a.m. Saturdays).

Share this newsletter with friends and family who you think may enjoy an Adult Learn to Row course!

The mental and physical challenges are amazing, rewarding for sure.  Not to mention the discipline necessary to be present often before the sun and the responsibility of having good attendance for the affect it has on the coach’s plan and your boat mates.  Excellent lessons to apply to everyday life! “Row for life” is a phrase I have heard often over the past two years as my daughter has progressed from a beginning middle school rower to a member of River City Rowing Club’s Juniors competitive team.

One aspect of the adult-learn-to row classes that has been motivating and extremely helpful has been meeting Master rowers who volunteer to fill in vacant spots in the beginning boats, often as coxswain. Some had even just learned to row earlier this summer!  While sweep rowing has a steep learning curve, one can indeed progress from beginner to experienced quickly. Seeing the Masters’ dedication to the club and rowing has been inspirational.

While an experienced rower can indeed be a single rower, rowing with RCRC is a team sport.  Anyone looking for exercise, both physical and mental, coupled with a desire to being part of a community, RCRC’s Adult Learn to Row is an excellent entryway into what could become a passion. From the hyper experienced to recent Learn-to-Row graduates it’s fun to see the depth of the RCRC Masters program at work in the boat.  Not to mention how fun it is to be a student of rowing. We even know how to carry a sixty foot shell now!

rowed or paddled watercraft can join the fun. Ocean and flat-water kayaks, surf skis, canoes, stand up paddle boards and outrigger canoes are likely to take to the water alongside RCRC entries. Past participants have included Olympians, elite athletes, enthusiastic novices and two Frenchmen with a fully stocked picnic basket aboard their canoe.

It's not too late to enter the Petaluma River Marathon or Half Marathon and there is still room on the RCRC trailer.

Continued from MIDDLE SCHOOL ROWING
The Middle School team focuses on technique and sculling in small boats; singles, doubles, and quads. Holly mixes in erging, general fitness, swim days and kayak days. At the end of summer there is a cook-out with all of the middle school rower families where the parents watch the kids compete in a “triathlon” of rowing themed activities, then man the grill while watching the rowers swim off the dock and have water fights.

As a parent of a former middle schooler (now junior) it was a great experience. Most of the parents stay to watch their athlete’s practice and begin to learn the sport themselves, which was my gateway into the sport.  If you come out in the evenings when the team practices you will see the gathering of adults watching, sharing snacks, and enjoying the peninsula. Many of our middle schoolers and parents come out to help on our volunteer days as well.

The middle school team is also one of our pipelines to the juniors team. In 2018-2019 nine novice juniors came up from our middle school ranks, and this year we will have a few more. If you have the chance to go out and row when the middle schoolers are practicing it is a great experience to watch the young rowers. They have no fear, becoming experts in handling boats on the water in no time and know how to help each other and the coach in setting up launches, getting boats in and out of the water (including washing and wipe downs), and handling oars.

Continued from THE MYSTIQUE
being a very lightweight lineup the boat handled well and the crew had a thorough workout.

The boatmaker is one very familiar to Arthur: Hudson Boatworks out of Ontario, Canada.  “I’ve worked with them for thirteen years at Washington State with zero regrets; nothing but complete satisfaction in performance and service,” remarked Arthur.  The new shell comes equipped with quick-release shoes and an extra set of shoes was ordered so that we have options for either large or small feet. The ideal weight range for the shell is 165-195 pound crew average, which will allow the most members of our club to access it.

It is a beautiful navy blue with white triangular highlights on the decks. “We take pride in our blue oar blades with the white stripe,” noted Raul, “and this boat shows that pride on the boat itself.”

Not only is it a quad, but it has sweep riggers so that it can be rigged as a straight (coxless) 4. There is toe steering in bow-seat to help the boat fine tune its course. We want this boat to last for a very long time and for that reason we’ve invested in a boat cover to keep it clean and protected during trailering and at races. This boat will be used by the advanced masters teams and varsity junior squads, and with another quad in our fleet, allow more availability of our three other quads for our intermediate and novice scullers.

Continued from MASTERS NATIONALS

from Canada, are expected to race for a combined  1,400+ entries. Members of the Advanced Women’s, Open Women’s, Masters Men’s, and Intermediate Mixed Masters’ teams have been busy preparing for Nationals.  In 2008 the Open Women’s team won a gold medal in the 4+ A event, while the Advanced Women’s team missed medals in three events by .04, .06, and 1.4 seconds. All teams have finalized lineups and made other final preparations, hoping to give themselves the best possible opportunity to get on the medal podium this year.

Over 60 RCRC athletes, whose ages range from 23 to 75 years, will be competing in more than 50 races, primarily focusing on the club events. Individual rowers and scullers from RCRC are also planning to compete and hoping to medal at the regatta. For example, Joel Griffith is looking to increase his medal haul at Nationals after winning five events—sculling in a single, with RCRC members, and with other clubs—at the Northwest Regional Championships in June.
