Bristol Parks Forum Update

In this update:

Parks Foundation

Further to my emails of last week, I have now put some details on our website at www.bristolparksforum.org.uk/foundation/

We will keep this up to date as the work to establish the Foundation develops.

Please do spread the word about the Project Manager role as widely as you can.

Peter Wilkinson Bristol Memorial Event

We have received the following from Peter’s friend and former colleague Steve Hardiman:

At his family’s request, there is to be a Bristol-based event on Friday 21 September, in the Dairy Garden at Blaise Castle Estate, adjacent the Orangery connected to Blaise House.  The broad intention is for a Garden Party ‘’between 4pm and 8 pm (ish)'', but more will be clear as event planning evolves. The occasion is intended to be a family friendly event, and bringing partners and offspring is encouraged.  I will set up an e-mail group, and endeavour to provide any more news as it emerges.  It is being largely put together by Jennifer Mackley who is not just a professional events organiser, but another close friend of Pete's.

In the meantime, the family 'have asked friends to donate to in his memory'.  Many already have, and when you read what they have in mind you will know that the initiative is in relation to a subject most dear to Peter's heart, if not to ours as well.

Incidentally, I had a useful discussion with Pete about our plans for a Parks Foundation back in January when we were putting our stage one bid together; he was very supportive. He would have been delighted that our bid was successful.

One Tree Per Child will be at Plummers Hill tomorrow (Wednesday).

This is one of their regular training days – a chance to learn more about tree maintenance and how you can help look after trees in your local park. The days run from 10am to 3pm with all tools and training provided free. For more information, contact onetreeperchild@bristol.gov.uk or call 0117 922 3719.

Concessions Re-tender

Further to Sharon Radnedge’s update at our meeting we have had the following from Sue Long who is the project manager working to re-tender all of the concessions within Bristol’s parks.

We have had some delays and will now be looking to start the tender in September 2018.  As part of this process the Council is applying for Street Trading licences in advance in order to help speed up the process for the successful trader once they have been awarded the pitch.  Street Trading applications have a 21 day consultation period attached and so from this week notices will be placed on noticeboards in the following parks:

  • Redland Green Park
  • Blaise Castle
  • Brandon Hill
  • Castle Park
  • Greville Smyth
  • Oldbury Court Estate
  • St Andrews Park
  • Victoria Park
  • St Georges Park

If there are any issues/questions they should be directed through to the following email addresses:

Rough Sleeping Consultation

This didn’t get mentioned at our meeting, but perhaps should have been as it is an issue that is impacting a lot of parks.

The consultation runs until 26th August and there is a drop-in session tomorrow evening (Wednesday)  from 6.30 – 8.00pm at City Hall.

More details and a link to the consultation are at www.bristol.gov.uk/roughsleeping

City Nature Challenge, Save the Date

Wildlife enthusiasts of the West of England

For the second year City Nature Challenge will return to Bristol and Bath as we join the world’s largest audit of the natural world!

Fri 26th to Mon 29th April 2019

In 2018 Bristol and Bath competed against 65 other cities across the world in the challenge to engage as many residents as possible with their local wildlife and record the most observations of the nature they found. Even though we were one of the smallest regions taking part, we achieved the amazing position of 1st in Europe and 13th in the world! In 2019 we hope to do even better as the competition grows to an expected 100+ cities and so we’re inviting organisations and individuals across the region to be part of this unique and exciting challenge!

Click here to see the initial results from this year!

Watch this space and we look forward to following up with you as plans come together!

Please do share with anyone you think might be interested in joining the challenge!

Thanks and very best wishes,

Matt

Nightingale Valley Access Track

The Environment Agency is consulting on proposals for a new access track to their trash screen on Brislington Brook in Nightingale Valley. This is in order to provide access to a major flood defence asset which resides in the centre of the woodland.

I’m pleased to say that they have already been in discussions with the Friends of Brislington Brook and Bristol Parks about their proposals.

Details are at www.bristolparksforum.org.uk/NightingaleValleyAccess.pdf

The consultation runs until 17th August; the intention is to submit a planning application at the end of the consultation period and carry out the works towards the end of the year or at the start of next year.

And if you have never explored the Brislington Brook through St Anne’s Woods and Nightingale Valley then you should, it is well worth a look.
