A Note from Your President

by Rich Donnelly, President FOLKS
This past July 19th was a very special day for FOLKS and the Park.  Representatives from the Park, FOLKS, the Park Service, and the Architect met on the site to welcome the contractor for the new Welcome and Discovery Center building, Owen Ames Kimball –  the new member of the building team. This meeting means that the Building is now officially underway, with a groundbreaking scheduled for December!

Eric Draper, the head of the Park Service, also welcomed the group, sharing his enthusiasm for the project. It has been many years since the Park Service has seen a significant new building project at any of its 175 State Park locations.

It is truly exciting to think of the impact that the new Welcome and Discovery Center will have on the Park as well as the entire Southwest Florida Community.  New programs for education and learning, special events, community meetings, lectures, and an air conditioned space for Ranger sponsored programs.  Not to mention a truly beautiful and iconic building.

Now FOLKS has work to do as we continue to raise the funds to fit up the building with Exhibits, equipment and furnishings. There are truly exciting times ahead and we hope all members can share that excitement.  Come join in!!

As the FOLKS prepare for the next season of events, we will continue to focus individual and Board energy on the $1,500,000 Capital Campaign that will provide exhibits and other fixtures for the new building. You can help us make it happen. Read more about the Welcome and Discovery Center on our website, and consider a generous donation to the fund.

Red Tide Challenges Coastal Communities
including Lovers Key State Park

At the Park, staff continue to keep a close eye on the situation and with the help of dedicated volunteers are busy keeping the beach clean and welcoming to our visitors.

Red Tide is a naturally occurring microscopic algae that occurs worldwide. The season for such blooms in S.W. Florida is typically October to February, but this year it has lasted 10 months already. Red tide kills fish, discolors the water and can irritate skin and breathing in some people although generally you can swim in red tide areas.

Seafood in restaurants and Hotels is monitored and safe to eat, but you should avoid eating clams and oysters harvested recreationally.  Visit the Lee County Visitor and Convention Bureau website for a complete collection of resources on the Red Tide and water quality issues. Interestingly, the new Lovers Key Welcome and Discovery Center will offer learning programs focused on water quality issues; water issues are becoming an increasingly serious concern for the whole State of Florida.
“ I cannot but have reverence for all that is called life.  I cannot avoid compassion for everything that is called life. That is the beginning and foundation of morality.
– Albert Schweitzer, quoted in Reverence for Life

2018 Lovers Key Sea Turtle Season Update

Each year the staff of Lovers Key State Park partners with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to monitor sea turtle nesting on the Park's beaches from April 15 to October 31. A trained Park Ranger patrols the 2½-mile stretch of beach looking for evidence of sea turtle nesting activity.

Nests each get protection with stakes, flagging tape, and a self-releasing cage to help protect nests from predators (such as raccoons), and from visitors accidentally getting too close. Despite these efforts, of the 48 nests in the Park, 21 have been completely predated and 19 have been partially predated, leaving only 8 intact.
