We also welcome the following staff members- Donna Eckstein to Room 5, Pam Speight to Room 14, Bernie to Room 12a, and Wirihana deTheirry to a teacher training practice for eight weeks this term.

Tena koutou, tena koutou, tena koutou kua haere mai nei  ki tenei kura.

Getting information important to you

Over the last two terms we have been working on a communication plan so you can better access the information you need as a member of this school community.

Whole school information is on the website - This includes enrolment information, key school dates etc. (Our website is old and we are in the process of revamping it.)

Whole school news is on our newsletter - e.g. school closures, upcoming events.

This is now fortnightly and accessible on your smartphone. Make sure it does not go in your  spam folder because your machine doesn’t recognise Mailchimp (which is the system we are using to send it to you).

It is also available on our website.

Class/ syndicate/ sport information (e.g. trips to the Suter) will come via an email (generated through Linc-ed) or Facebook from your syndicate leader, teacher or sports coordinator.

Personal information about your child will come from their teacher :

Assessment info and reports via Linc-ed. You were given your username and password to access this last term;    Please see John on Thursday during Learning Showcase if you need help with this.

Conversations via email or Phone

Daily updates about class happenings via Seesaw or class dojo.

Eventually class dojo / seesaw will be superceded by Linc-ed.

As all of this shows, we have moved from a paper based system to a digital one. There are a handful of whanau who have let us know they have no online access in any way - and they will continue to receive paper versions. Please let us know if you are having difficulty accessing information.

We need to be confident you are reading what has been sent as it may have implications for your family and child, as is the case in this newsletter.

I am also initiating a new parent forum each term - (hopefully Mondays in week 3) . Come along to the staffroom after 9 am next Monday 6 August to find out what is happening in the school and have your say. All welcome.

Ngā mihi
Pip
My name is Donna Eckstein and I have recently returned, with my husband Tony, to New Zealand after teaching internationally for the last 6 years.
I have two sons one of whom is a chef and the other who is a student studying Business Studies and Computer programming.
I have taught in Dubai for two years, Amman Jordan for two years and Bali, Indonesia for the last two years. While it has been very rewarding and I have learnt so much both professionally and also personally there is no place like home.

I started teaching in 2002 in Rotorua in a wonderful school called Selwyn Primary School. I met my husband Tony who lived in Tauranga during this time so after teaching in Rotorua for 10 years I moved to Tauranga and started working at Merivale Primary School for a year and a half before accepting my first international teaching position in Dubai.
I have never lived in the South Island so this is the start of a new adventure which we are both very excited about.
I love cycling, Yoga, Kayaking and tramping and I think the South Island caters for all of these.
I look forward to exploring this beautiful part of New Zealand and getting to know you all.

 LOST PROPERTY
A massive amount of lost property was collected up last term.  Thank you so much to Melissa Jury, who kindly washed everything ready for the charity store.  BUT we want the amount of lost property reduced!  PLEASE name all your child's clothing clearly so if they get separated  it can be returned safely.  If you have lost something, check on Room 9's deck.  Thank you.

Wednesday 15 August – NZEI National Day of Action

Wednesday August 15 will be a National Day of Action for teachers and support workers in schools.
NZEI members are keen to ensure all New Zealanders know how serious they are about ensuring quality public education and a sustainable teaching workforce.

Please talk to your child's teacher to find out more about the issues that concern them.

This means our school will be closed on this day for instruction and for supervision. We are unable to provide the Health and Safety requirements to keep your children safe on that day without these key staff members.

Yikes will be able to provide supervision on that day . Please contact them for more details or check their website (information below under community notices).

A big thank you to all those Nelson Central School parents who purchased their stationery through OfficeMax and nominated the school for MySchool Rewards.  With those rewards the school now has $619.08 to spend at OfficeMax.
also
Page and Blackmore have generously opened a Group Membership account for Nelson Central School. If you nominate Nelson Central School when you purchase a book at Page and Blackmore, we will accrue credits that can then be used to purchase books for fundraisers, e.g. for raffles, etc.

Please spread the word.
Thanks for your help,
The Nelson Central School Community Group
The School Disco - as you can see - was a fabulous success.
Big thanks to the wonderful team of parents that made this happen - Marcia, Sally, Jen, Sarah Jane, Fiona, Rachel, Michelle, Racheal, Andrea and Carleen.
You have made many children very happy!
Enormous thanks to all of those that helped to make this year's Winter Disco a success!  We had a wonderful group of volunteers that helped to organise the disco with the help of the School Community Group.   Another set of volunteers came in on the night to help with a huge range of jobs and still another set helped provide delicious baking to help fuel our dancers.  Without all of this help from the community, the disco would not have been possible.  THANK YOU.

Thank you also to our very generous donors.  We had disco prizes donated by Page & Blackmore and State Cinemas.  Our raffle basket was a great success due to the wonderful prizes donated by Miki from Miki D's Gym, Swim Magic at Riverside Pool, and The Wax Bar.
The disco raised $1364.00 which will go toward projects funded by the School Community Group.

Go to the Nelson Central School Facebook page to download your photobooth photos from the disco.

NZOPERA An opportunity for some of our students. First 50 students to pay at the office will be able to go to the NCMA Auditorium on Monday August 6th at 1-2pm.

NZO Opera in Schools tour is coming to Wellington and Christchurch and now Nelson!!!!
Our Opera in Schools team have recently finished up the first leg of their tour of 20 performances to over 5000 students and their teachers in both Rotorua and Auckland.
Cost: Still only $5 per student (conditions apply)
Here is just some of the great feedback we have received so far:

You made Opera 'cool' and that could not have been a better way to introduce the kids and most of the staff to it!! Teachers told me that most of their kids returned to class attempting opera singing (ie singing high etc) and buzzing about the show, telling each other their favorite parts.
- Teacher, Remuera Intermediate
The modification of the opera for this age level made the show accessible and fun for the students. My teenage son also found it fantastic and could recommend it for high school music students. He is very keen to see the full original opera in June now. Many teachers commented on what wonderful role models your performers were for our students.
- Teacher, Kawaha Point Primary

In this 45-minute English adaptation of this classic opera comedy (with a kiwi twist!) we meet Nemorino, a shy fry cook at the local Fish and Chip shop who is deeply in love with the beautiful Adina. However, the famous movie star Belcore arrives in town and declares his wish to marry Adina. Fearing he may lose his beloved to the more charismatic Belcore, Nemorino enlists the help of Dr Dulcamara, a traveling medicine man who convinces our hero to buy his famous 'love potion'. Will Adina fall in love with him or will he lose her to Belcore forever?

The New Zealand Opera in Schools Tour is a show devised for students in years 3-8, sung in English, followed by a short Q&A session if desired.

School Community Group:

The SCG would love some new members. We know there are lots of parents out there who have something new to contribute to our group, maybe from a previous school experience, another culture, or a unique workplace viewpoint. We are definitely under-represented by parents of new entrants, Te Pouahi parents and international parents.

The group meets once or twice a term, mainly to organise fun/fundraising events which directly benefit your child/ren, and it is a very fun group of teachers and busy parents just like you. Events like the Central Challenge, the Central Crank (mountain bike mini-race) and the Disco are heaps of fun to organise with a good team of people involved; there are lots of different roles that involve as much or as little time as you can afford. If you are on the fence about whether or not to join, just come along to the Community Group AGM on Tuesday 7th August at 7pm in the staffroom or our next Community Group Meeting on 21st August at 7pm in the staffroom and get a feel for what it’s about.

Email this address with any questions, or just show up!

Kowhai News
Friday of Week 1, Term 2 was the 100th Day of School. In Kowhai we celebrated this in may ways including writing 100 numbers, making 100 Days trail mix, graphing 100 jelly beans, wearing 100 Day's crowns and a 100 Days scavenger hunt. Many of us had worked on projects at home with our families during the Term 2-3 holiday and we even got to look at a special website made about the first 100 Days in Kowhai. Check out all the fun on this video.
We can't wait to see what the next 100 days will bring!
Pohutukawa News

Pohutukawa celebrated more Syndicate Superstars at the end of Term 2 and the start of this term!!  Tino Pai!
Room 9 now have their very own News Reporters.  We take it in turns to find a current events story that interests us and report the news to the class in our 'live' morning news slot.
Jacob shared a very interesting report about an iceberg floating dangerously close to Greenland.  This is a great way for us to practise our oral language skills and questioning.

A selection of some of Room 12's wonderful writing from Term 2!

Colour Poem- Tahlia

Yellow is the my favourite banana I like to eat.
Yellow is the beautiful smelling sun flower.
Yellow is the nice hot sun.
Yellow is delicious honey.
Yellow is the colour of a chirping parrot.
Yellow is the colour of a fast bicycle.
Yellow is our really fun slide.
Yellow is bright face paint at a fair.

Description- Jonty

Tony is our school caretaker. His hair is grey and brown. He is tall like a tree. He likes to wear a cap, shorts, and a t-shirt. He also likes to wear his work shoes. He gets the leaves out of the gutters. He is nice. Some people call him Tony Macaroni. He smiles a lot and laughs at the same time. He has a big job looking after our school.

Colour Poem -Josie

Yellow is the colour of the honey we eat.
Yellow is the colour of the sun that sparkles over us.
Yellow is the colour of the pillow I sleep on at night. Yellow is the colour of hot hot fire.
Yellow is the colour of pollen.

Description- Julius

Tony is the caretaker of Nelson Central School. He wears shorts, t-shirts, a cap and big boots. He has brown and grey hair. He is a good painter. He cleans the gutters and he fixes stuff. He takes children in the wheelbarrow. Tony cleans up our spew and gets balls off the roof. I like Tony. He keeps our school clean and tidy and takes weeds out of the gardens. He empties the rubbish bins. He makes sure we don’t slip. He smiles a lot. Tony has a very important job.

Recount- Ryan
On Wednesday room 12 made a vegetable soup to celebrate Matariki. First, we got some boiling water and we turn the pot on. We made it with soup mix, onion, orange carrots, yellow corn, potato and spicy garlic. It was very very good! While others were cutting we made a paper chain to decorate the class. I was very excited. Matariki is a lovely time of year where you share food and stories. The seven stars are sisters. They are an amazing family. We fly kites, some are dragon kites. You can see the stars if you get up in time. They are visible in June and July this year. I like Matariki.
Totara News
This term we are learning all about the Human Body. Classes have already been discovering about body systems and how they work together. Here is a video of Miles explaining how different systems rely on each other:

Ngā Karere o Te Pouahi
Te Pouahi 16/17 are now working more collaboratively.  We have two kaiako kaiāwhina and 45 tamariki in a double classroom space.  We have years 2, 3, 4 and 5 in our classroom spaces. The pedagogy of Tuakana-Teina is implemented into our teaching and learning each and everyday.  We all have shared responsibilities in our classroom to ensure we are able to work together. We are also kaitiaki of our classroom environment.  The picture above is our first collaborative art piece for this term.  We were learning to use warm and cool colours.  The whakatauki used on our art piece is very appropriate. "Kaua e rangiuatia te hāpai o te hoe e kore tō tātou waka, E ū ki uta!"  Do not lift the paddle out of unison or our canoe will never reach the shore.

In the Holidays

In the holidays, well on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Me my mum had to look after my cousins. We had to pick them up from their house. We always go to the basketball hoops because my cousins love basketball. We drove to the basketball hoops.  Sometimes we would go to the movies too. We watched Jurassic World, Incredibles 2, and Show dogs, it was very cool. We went to watch the Hurricanes vs Crusaders. The Crusaders won! Me and my family were like boo, boo, boo, so we went to bed!

The Holidays

In the holidays I was at Yikes. On Thursday, we went to Spooners Tunnel. The teacher said "do not touch the sides, if you do this black stuff will stay in your skin" Some people touched the sides! On Friday me and my Nan went to the movies and we watched Ant Man, it was so cool. In the second week we went to the swimming pool and on Friday we had the best day ever! We had a bouncy castle, an obstacle course competition, it was so fun, I felt happy! On Saturday in the morning me and my Mum went to Masonic hall so we could help set up for my Mum's friends birthday party.  After we set up, my Mum dropped me off at my Dads' house. We played Yahtzee and then I played Fortnite. On Sunday I went to the supermarket with my dad so I could buy a card for my cousin's birthday. My baby cousin was counting to ten, it was so cute. When we went inside, I started to do handstands, then my baby started to do handstands too.  Next my little cousin jumped into the splits! After that it was time for me to go home. Before I went home we went and seen my Nana and Grandad.  After we went home we went for a bike ride to the playground.  Once we got home back to my Dad's, Dad dropped me home to my Mum.  My holiday's were fantastic!

On Thursday the 5th of July we were lucky to host Hannah and Liam, two no waste nomads travelling New Zealand spreading their knowledge and enthusiaum about living waste free. They have been living waste free since 2015 and have left their normal lives of being a lawyer and a music teacher to present free workshops  to community groups, schools, businesses and households across New Zealand about how and why individuals can reduce their waste footprint.

They presented a highly engaging and informative workshop to around 35 of our tamariki. It was very thought provoking for our students, and they are excited to initiate some changes in their own homes and also into our school!  If you would like recipes or ideas for reducing your waste foot print they have a fantastic website

https://therubbishtrip.co.nz/about/

If you hear of them coming back through Nelson we would highly suggest you take the chance to see them speak!
