CBSSports.com's Norlander reports on specific changes coming the summer MBB recruiting calendar per a "high-level source" close to the developments. There's a lot here, including, "For the past decade-plus, coaches have evaluated and recruited prospects on the road once or twice in April (depending on how the calendar falls). April's evaluation calendar will remain the same, but if the proposal passes as anticipated, per the source, in-home visits for coaches will be allowed after on-the-road eval periods conclude. […] As for June, coaches will be allowed to go on the road for two three-day periods at the end of the month. The events will be scholastic-oriented (meaning apparel companies cannot be involved), with the focus on rekindling relationships and connections between college and high school coaches. […] In July, coaches will be moved from from three weekends to one when it comes to attending sanctioned, non-scholastic (so-called "AAU") events. The earliest five-day July evaluation period will remain in place; coaches will still be able to attend Nike's Peach Jam and other non-scholastic tournaments in that window. The month itself is shrinking from three recruiting weekends to two, with the second featuring camp-style events that will be coordinated by the NCAA, USA Basketball, the NBA and the NBA Players Association." Southland Commish Burnett gets a contract extension that could now see him lead the league through June of 2022. Sam Houston State Prez & conference Board of Directors Chair Hoyt: "The presidents continue to recognize the Southland’s steady growth under his watch, including an unprecedented expansion of television coverage, the recent development of a conference-wide strategic plan, the increased quality of championship events, and improvement in the collective academic standing and well-being of Southland student-athletes." Burnett is already the longest-tenured leader in league history at nearly 16 years. (link)
New Oakland AD Waterfield's initial contract is good for three years at $237K a pop. Former Grizzlies boss & current Northeastern AD Konya was at $210K & Waterfield was making $222K in his Executive Assoc. AD post at Nebraska. Like Konya, Waterfield does not have any bonus opportunities, but will receive a $750 per month automobile stipend. There's also this, "There is no buyout on Waterfield's contract, though he can't discuss employment with other NCAA institutions without first notifying Oakland University officials. If he's fired without cause, he's eligible for severance; with cause, he's not." Looks like an Ohio State administrator & "a sitting athletic director from the south" were the other two finalists in the OU search. (link)
Still no word on the future of embattled & on leave Idaho AD Spear, but the investigation into the handling of a 2013 alleged sexual assault concludes Spear's response was "inadequate." Per the independent report, "We believe if Dr. Spear had made the same effort as his head football coach by apologizing in person and without trying to explain how the university failures caused him to respond inadequately, the university may not have to address these issues five years later. An athletics director likely is viewed by student-athletes and parents as the primary face of the university administration. As such, taking an approach that problems resulted from university shortcomings, as if he or she is separate from the institution, is unacceptable." Next Board meeting set for August 15. Washington State Prez Schulz inks on athletics in a letter to faculty & staff, "Having a successful intercollegiate athletics program is a critical component of growing our national reputation and visibility. And it goes beyond reputation and visibility. Intercollegiate athletics also helps us build the kind of community in which our faculty, staff, and students can join in and cheer on their Cougar athletes. […] While the value of big-time sports at public universities will continue to be debated, I am convinced that the benefits of participation outweigh the drawbacks here at WSU. It is important that we appropriately fund nationally competitive intercollegiate sports teams. In short, if we are going to participate—let’s do it right." Steps to righting the current financial crunch for the Cougars: 1) "There's no magic pot of money"; 2) Work with a balanced budget; 3) Build reserve funds; and, 4) Repay cumulative debts (projected to be $85M by 2022) back to central campus. Louisiana Monroe boss Floyd points to providing his HCs the resources necessary to excel at the FCS level as his key takeaway after a year of leading the Warhawks, "this is a resource-driven game." Looking at a "multi-faceted" approach to increasing revenues, which sounds like it basically means optimizing every cash flow. Additional facility projects could include more upgrades at Malone Stadium, Fant-Ewing Coliseum & for Baseball. Season FB ticket sales up 20% to date, cost of attendance discussion "moving forward," but no implementation this year, says biggest strength is talent in the HC ranks with revenue generate the area in need of the most improvement. Here's the 2017-18 Year in Review from Southern Miss, includes achievement markers of the second-largest Eagle Club membership count in history (2,594), record baseball & softball season ticket sales, hiring Conference USA's first full-time nutritionist & completing the department's first comprehensive needs report. Page six includes a handful of facility upgrade pictures & there's also some solid graphics outlining sport-by-sport competitive achievements. (link); Golden Eagles AD Gilbert also announces the hiring of three new staffers for the Ticket Sales & Service team in a new department structure. Senior Assoc. AD for External Affairs Pugh: "Creating value for our Season Ticket Holders is paramount. We want to recognize their investment in our success and we want to reward them with access to special events, benefits, and top-notch service." (link)
New York Times headliner Tracy with a sizable spread on the time commitment necessary by student-athletes even in summer months, comes with the byline of, "Want to play volleyball or field hockey or soccer in college? Say goodbye to your summer." Tracy argues "many lower-profile college sports have become virtually year-round affairs," get comments from a handful of student-athletes, like Creighton Volleyball's Kloth, "I think it’s the norm now. You almost feel as though you’re behind if you’re not." Perspective from former Northeastern AD & Knight Commission member Roby, "If the athletes don’t have the chance to take time off, that’s where they start to get burned out, injuries start to happen. And that’s why you may have athletes who feel they should be paid — because they never get any time off." AVCA Executive Director DeBoer thinks around 75% of Volleyball student-athletes stay on campus during the summer, points to the progress that can be made by being around teammates. More. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Elk Grove Village, which sits next Chicago's O'Hare Airport & boasts the largest contiguous industrial park in the United States (5,614 businesses), is the new title sponsor of the Bahamas Bowl under the brand 'Makers Wanted.' Forbes' Dosh says it's the first bowl deal for a non-tourist municipality. Elk Grove Village Mayor Johnson: "Last season, I was watching all these bowl games for four straight days. And as I was watching one of the smaller bowl games, I could just see our slogan painted on the field. […] It's name recognition and branding we're looking for. […] People will be curious and they'll Google 'Makers Wanted' and our town will pop right up." Johnson notes previous solid marketing results from advertising in Chicago Cubs broadcasts. Impression Sports & Entertainment, Banner Collective & 4FRONT all involved in the deal. (link)

Former IMG College property leader Myford officially introduced as the new AD at Alaska Anchorage. Myford: "I want to be where education, high-level performance, and leadership intersect. The athletic director position is just about the bull’s eye. […] There comes a time when you cannot save your way out of it, you have to address the other side of the equation. How do we raise revenues, and I think that’s what my focus will be. This is not unique to UAA. There are a lot of college athletic programs trying to figure out how we pay the bills." (link)
Pac-12 Hotline scribe Wilner analyzes the Pac-12's hire of former UC Davis Interim AD & Cal senior leader Gould as the league's new Senior Associate Commissioner, Sports Management and Institutional Services. Wilner: "Gould joins deputy commissioner Jamie Zaninovich as the only members of Scott's senior staff -- on either the conference or networks sides of the building -- who have significant experience working on a campus. And she's the only senior official with a direct line to Scott who has toiled on a public campus. […] Officially, Gould will oversee the Olympic sports, along with compliance and governance; and notably, she’ll report directly to Scott. In reality, she'll strengthen the conference immeasurably by lending vital perspective from the campus level to the decision-making process at HQ." (link)
The Big Lead's Glasspiegel wonders if the allegations swirling around CBS boss Moonves might impact the network's interest and/or ability to renew the SEC on CBS package that runs through 2023. Glasspiegel: "Compared to what other sports rights have gone for since this deal was signed, CBS’s $55 million per year deal with the SEC, which expires in 2023, is insane value. I would expect this package to go for several multiples of its current price when it is done, and CBS was already going to have to swallow the idea of paying a lot more for it or risking losing it. There are going to be many bidders." (link); Interpret these comments from Apple CEO Cook as you want, but here's what he had to say about TV in his company's Q3 earnings call, "Cord cutting in our view is only going to accelerate. […] I couldn’t be more excited about what’s going on there (Apple's TV unit)." (link)
Loyola Chicago MBB HC Moser chats it up with former Maine MBB HC Walsh on the latest edition of his Dynamic Leadership Podcast. Moser: "Sometimes your ego tells you to go take that head coaching job but your best bet is to probably go where you can learn the most, and that may be as an assistant. […]  When you get guys who won state championships in high school, winning is a part of who they are. They want it again. […]  Sometimes you talk about winning the conference tournament and you forget about winning what’s right in front of you." (link); Anther audio note as 1.Question's Brown talks to Michigan State FB HC Dantonio, "We believe everybody is a resources. Our players are a resource so we need to build into them. We are a resource for our players, so they need to build into us. We are resources for each other, so we need to build into each other. […] You can't be great at anything you do unless you love it and I believe that love is another way to phrase 'great chemistry’." (link)
More Personnel: We still don't know the exact details of the contract for new Texas A&M FB HC Fisher, but we do now know OC Dickey will make $800K & a new clause in Aggies contracts states mishandling gender violence incidents can lead to termination. (link); Notable Under Armour leader Lofton, SVP of Global Brand Management, looks to be exiting for a gig at Nike. No details have been provided on a search for a new boss or Nikias' departure. (link)
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports former Missouri MBB student-athlete Phillips did indeed violate sexual misconduct policies, despite what he said publicly last week. One of the women who filed a Title IX complaint against Phillips received an email in June that stated Phillips was in violation of the university's Sex Discrimination, Sexual Harassment and Sexual Misconduct in Education policies. Inappropriate text messages & visits to the woman's work seem to be part of the story, "He was just really, really obsessive. He’s very pushy and aggressive. Even with me, he was very aggressive in the way he touched me and hugged me and in text messages. I asked him to back off a lot and he comes on even stronger." (link)
This is an interesting quote from NBC Broadcast & Sports boss Lazarus on the hire of PGA of America CEO Bevacqua as his new Prez of NBC Sports Group, "What I’ve found in creating successful organizations is that sometimes bringing new and outside perspectives can enhance and propel an organization. I want to bring in those outside perspectives. Read anything that you and your colleagues write. In today’s environment, it’s all about how old media is doing the same old thing all over again. I believe that bringing in outside and new thinking is good for any organization, no matter what it is." More good stuff from SBJ's Ourand. (link)

New Kansas AD Long officially starts with the Jayhawks today & KUSports' Tait outlines what should be Long's top priorities: 1) Heavy FB evaluation; 2) Staff organization; 3) Get to know KU's donors; 4) Observe and learn; and, 5) Start moving on a softball hire. On that last item, "Remember, Long is a man who considers himself “an all-sports guy,” and he’s not going to let one of his programs operate in the dark for too long without a plan for the future. Although Long’s softball hire might not offer any hints about what he will do with future hires, it’s worth paying attention to in case any philosophical clues emerge." (link)
The spotlight continues to shine on the Big South & its 35 years with Commish Kallandar getting the profile treatment. On his two-decades of leadership, Kallander says he only expected to lead the league for "four to five years before I'd be off to the next thing. But there are a lot of reasons for still being here. [...] There's a real opportunity to get some things done." Gardner Webb AD Burch: "Kyle has done a great job understanding the needs of the conference as a whole and trying to accomplish that in what would be a realistic fashion. He’s been good at giving us not what we want to hear but trying to take steps for the betterment of the conference. Is it as quick as some of us would like it to be? Probably not, but that’s one of those things you have to deal with." (link); Kallander will now be supported by new Senior Assoc. Commish Holland, who arrives to oversee MBB, public relations, digital initiatives, marketing & branding. Holland is a former USC Upstate MBB student-athlete & multi-stop collegiate AC. (link)
Win AD publishes a panel from the NACDA Convention, 'The Art of Making Difficult Decisions,' that included Washington AD Cohen, Auburn AD Greene, Northern Illinois boss Frazier & Eastern Michigan's Wetherbee. Subtopics covered by the group include how to appropriately communicate the decision to cut sports, differentiating between large & small decisions, working through complex situations, responding when a narrative gets out of control, qualities in staff members & lots more. Video is a touch over an hour. (link)
The latest development in the Florida FB student-athletes connection to a dispute with an area gambler reportedly includes discounts for the players at a local Enterprise. Statement from the Gators: "We understand GPD has followed up last week’s UPD report with a background report that has Devante Zachery (aka Tay Bangs) as its primary source. We are not aware if there will be any additional information provided by GPD on this matter. Anytime we get information involving our student athletes we look into it." (link)
Wisconsin-Milwaukee revamped its MBB pricing tiers & the new low point is $130, which is $55 more for a season package than last year. Another notable change is seat donation requirements that moved from $240 to $575 per account to the same range per seat. Panthers Asst. AD for Strategic Communications Zills says it's still the best deal in town. (link); Check out the designs on Colorado FB's tickets this year thanks to artwork from patients at Children's Hospital Colorado. Pretty neat. (link)

(link); Florida State introduces a new area within Doak Campbell Stadium, the Back Porch, that will open two hours before kick & allow for alcohol consumption within its space.
