Knit...and be happy!

August 2018
 Projects of the Month...
Sugar Pop

Fun, Fun, Fun, Knit! A little bit of garter, a little bit of slip stitching, and a little bit of easy lace and, poof, you have a burst of color added to your knitwear collection. Sugar Pop by Lisa Ross caught Ann's eye at a recent trade show and she could hardly wait for the yarn to arrive in the shop so she could cast on the shawl. The stitching is quite easy and the lace sections are written out and charted, allowing you to work in your comfort zone. Changing colors and patterns make this project a joy to pick up and knit. Pop some color into your August and knit this amazing shawl!

Shawls. Knit in Style

Staff Inspirations...
All of us at Monarch spend a lot of time culling through Ravelry, Facebook and Instagram for inspiration.  We thought it would be fun for each of us to share what has caught our eye in the last month and moved into our Ravelry queues.

Ann: What is it about Isabell Kramer's Hamble pullover that just reads California to me? While it would be delicious in any color, I just think the orange blaze looks like a sunset in a blue sky on a white beach.  Every time I look at this sweater, it just make me happy!

Koryn:  I'm currently crushing on Caitlin Hunter's Marettimo pullover.  It's just my style with it's classic feather and fan lace motif that has a vintage look and feel.  I could easily throw this on with some jeans or over a cute dress - perfect for layering!

Diane:  What can say, I'm still on a crochet kick!  This time with the Karoo Vintage afghan by Jen Tyler.  Each motif is seriously a work of art!  Could you imagine all of the colors you could put together? I definitely won't be bored with this pattern!

Jana: When I came across the Esko Kimono by Jane Veitenheimer, I knew it had to pop right into my queue!  I just love everything about this pattern - stripes, unique construction and that it's easily a wardrobe staple. Plus, it's knit in luxurious Blue Sky Fibers Silk Alpaca yarn.  Who wouldn't want that?!

Jenn:  Allie by Jennifer Wood reminds me of one of my favorite shawls I've knitted, Hiraeth by Rae Gronmark because it has a little bit of everything: garter and textured stitches, stripes, and some mosaic knitting.  It's so much fun choosing colors for shawls like these.  But let's get real here, you know it's gonna be grays with a pop for me!

Heather:  I'm such a sucker cozy cardigans that I can just layer over anything, so when I saw the Savage Heart Cardigan by Amy Christoffers, I immediately added it to my favorites!  Wouldn't this be amazing in Woolfolk's TOV DK yarn?

Sweater Technique Workshop with
Elizabeth Doherty of Blue Bee Studio

Saturday November 10th, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm
$80.00

Selecting a great pattern and beautiful yarn may be the first steps of a new and exciting project, but what else can you do to ensure that your vision of the perfect sweater will be achieved? This 3 hour class will focus on how to perfect the techniques that make a garment a truly exceptional knit.

Knitters will participate in demonstrations showing the optimal way to work a variety of techniques that Elizabeth Doherty includes in many of her sweater designs. There will also be an opportunity to be accurately measured, and record the key measurements needed when making the crucial decision of which size of a sweater is going to be the best fit. We’ll also talk about making gauge adjustments, and swatching to find (or create) the ideal fabric for a design.

The goal is to leave the class with a swatch sampler showing the following techniques executed to perfection:

• Lifted increases
• Improved cable cast-on (one that prevents the hole you normally get!)
• I-cord bind-off
• Picking up stitches
• Lateral braid
• Simple wrap and turn short rows and how to substitute other types
• Perfect 2-row buttonhole
• Easy provisional cast-on

Skill: You must be familiar with knitting, purling, increasing, decreasing, pattern reading and knitting terms.

CustomFit Workshop: Gauge Swatches and Measurements
Call the store for an appointment!
$20.00

Knitting this swatch is about the fabric you want to knit your sweater in, not how a standardized pattern tells you it should be knit. We will also take your CustomFit measurements and enter them into the computer to be stored for you.

Finishing
$30.00 per hour

Bring your project and together we will make sure it is beautifully seamed.
