Our School Value for Term Three
Integrity/Pono

Attendance 86%                                      Roll 757

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

A warm welcome back to school to all our whanau and especially to all of our new families who have joined our school this term. It has been a wet and chilly start to the term, however, thanks to the Board of Trustees, all of our classes have had new heat pumps installed during the holidays making for warm and dry classrooms.

We would also like to extend a warm welcome to Mr Dave Stenning who has taken up a teaching role in Room 30, to Mrs Rebekah Stewart and Ms Liss Burns who have started our new entrant class in Room 18 and Mrs Aletta Ashdown who is taking over from Mrs Rachelle Watson in Room 6.  We hope that their association with our school will be a long and happy one.

Week one has been very busy with extramural activities. Our Rippa and Tackle teams have been in action up at Rautawhiri Park and our Senior girls' football team did exceptionally well at the Auckland championships making it to the quarterfinals. The results all bode well for the AIMS games later in September.

As you are probably aware, NZEI (the primary school teachers’ union) is in the process of negotiating a new teachers’ collective agreement.  Over the past nine years, schools and educators all over the country, and even more so in Auckland, have been facing challenging working conditions brought about by a lack of funding, resourcing, and inadequate support from the Ministry of Education. Teachers and principals have raised concerns about high workloads, lack of support for students with additional learning and behavioural needs, and the undervaluing of the profession. Unfortunately, our concerns have been dismissed by the Ministry of Education and the past government and, as a result, we have reached a crisis point that requires urgent attention.

Recent figures show that enrolment in teacher training has reduced by as much as 40% since 2010. To make matters worse, 80% of teachers who graduate leave the profession within three years of completing their degrees due to the increasing demands and pressures they are subjected to. As a result, schools are struggling to find and retain teachers. This puts immense pressure on us, as we strive to provide the best possible education for all our tamariki, while lacking time, support and resources.

As part of this negotiation, NZEI is calling for the Ministry to:

Fix the teacher-shortage crisis by making teaching a more attractive profession for young people. This could be achieved by eliminating unnecessary bureaucracy to reduce teachers’ workload, provide more support for teachers, and increase salaries to make teaching more competitive with other professions.

Address the staffing shortage by significantly increasing the funding for all schools to support leaders, classroom teachers, and teachers working with students with additional learning needs. We want to free up teachers to teach, and leaders to concentrate on quality teaching and learning programmes.

Unfortunately, at the end of the negotiation rounds, the Ministry has made an offer that fails to recognise the seriousness of this crisis, and that we believe will perpetuate it rather than fix it.

At our latest NZEI meetings, both principals and teachers overwhelmingly voted to reject the offer and engage in industrial action to send a strong message to the government that enough is enough. We feel compelled to stand up for our students, our schools, our communities, and our beloved profession. We also know that our campaign will not be won without our families and our communities, and therefore, we ask for your support.

We will be organising activities this term, and we would very much like to count on your presence, as we work together to defend our schools and to stand up for our children’s rights and their futures.

Our first activity involves a selection of poster boards that will be displayed in the office, and in various classrooms around the school. We would like you to write comments of support for your child’s teacher and the campaign we are running, to show the Ministry our community is standing up for our children’s best interests.

With the impending strike action on the 15th August, the Board of Trustees has decided to officially close the school for supervision and instruction for the duration of the planned action.
More information on the closure to follow.

Kind regards,

Gary Pasfield
Principal
Waimauku School

Student Achievement
Y7 & Y8 Girl's Soccer Team - Back in Term 2 our brilliant soccer girls qualified for the Auckland Interzone Tournament. This was held last week with some great soccer being played against many of Auckland's largest intermediate schools. Our team won 2 games out of the 5 they played in the round robin competition and placed 4th overall - a fantastic result. Many thanks to all the parents that transported and supported the team on the day.

Rippa Rugby Tournament - Our rugby players were in action at Rautawhiri Park last week gaining some great results in tough competition. We had beautiful weather which made for a lovely day. Thank you to the parents who supported and the coaches from Y7 & 8 who did an excellent job.
Y5/6 Tackle team - playing Rippa - won 1 and lost 2
Y5/6 Girls - won 1, lost 2
Y5/6 Boys - won 2
Y3/4  - won 3
Our Year 7 and 8 teams had great success at the EPro8 Challenge, taking first, third and fourth place!
The EPro8 Challenge is an engineering and problem solving race where teams compete to build structures, invent machines and undertake fun experiments.

Visit the Antarctic!
Last term Years 3 and 4 investigated Antarctic explorers and creatures. Some of their creative work is currently resident in the trophy cabinet in the school entrance.

Our Year 5 and 6 EPRO8 Teams had a great time at today's challenge and picked up a first and second equal placing for the efforts!

Thank you to Mr James for all your hard work on this great event!
Teacher's Day of Action
On Wednesday 15 August, all teachers who are in the NZEI Union will be taking industrial action for the whole day. This industrial action will involve nearly all of our teachers so the Board
