Summer 2018

Welcome

to the NVFPA Summer 2018 Newsletter....As the summer continues to fly by, please take a few minutes to read our updates and mark your calendars as we have a lot to share with you...

The Virginia General Assembly designates the third full week of September as
Fall Prevention Awareness Week.

The VA General Assembly recently passed HJR 81, which designates the 3rd full week in September as Falls Prevention Awareness Week (FPAW). This is exciting as it brings statewide attention to this important health issue.

We want to thank the Northern Virginia Aging Alliance (NVAN) and all of our members for their work on this effort. NVAN played a critical role in advocating for this designation. Delegate Karrie Delaney (Dist. 67) attended the NVAN meeting on July 17th and presented the resolution to the group.

Grant Update

Marymount University has been awarded funding to implement the Academic Community Partnership for Falls Prevention Network Hub. This is a U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, Administration for Community Living, Older Amercians’ Act Falls Prevention Grant. This will allow us to continue to expand the work of the Regional Training Office (RTO) and the Northern Virginia Falls Prevention Alliance (NVFPA) for the next three years (2018-2021).

BIG THANKS to all of our community partners who provided letters of support. We could not do this work without each and every one of you.
The Regional Training Office

The Northern Virginia Falls Prevention Regional Training Office (RTO) was created in August 2016 in an effort to provide ongoing training and support for leaders of evidence-based falls prevention programs across northern Virginia. With funds received from an Administration for Community Living grant, the RTO periodically hosts training workshops for A Matter of Balance, Stay Active and Independent for Life, and provides vouchers for an online Otago training.
