Summer break for educators is an incredible opportunity to rest and reflect. I have found over the last 7-8 years that the open calendar space during summer break has afforded more “theta wave” moments - chances to capture and associate creative ideas that sort of float by.

This summer, over the course of two days, I had one a few of those moments spurred from the most unlikely of places….the Today Show. Three moments in particular - a Jordan Spieth interview, a cooking demo from a child prodigy chef, and family who quit school for 10 years to sail around the world - got me thinking about just how disconnected school life is from real life. I wonder about “mastery”, school’s unique value propositions and whether age and ability are mutually exclusive.
