Welcome back! We are excited to start the 2018-19 school year with you! We've already got some great events lined up to get you started right!

August 28th  Fall School Garden Festival
Pick up the plants and seeds that you ordered, network with your fellow gardeners, and talk to garden service organizations. We will be set up at the UGArden from 4:30 to 6:30 PM with food and fun to get you organized for the year.

September 13th Green School Kick Off
We will all gather at the Hi Lo for food and giveaways to get your Green School year started off right! We will be handing out your green school prizes and certificates from 2017-18 and loading you up with information and goodies for the 2018-19 school year. Come eat and meet with us!

Need a School Garden Workday to get your beds ready for school?
This year we've set up a one stop questionnaire to get you signed up for volunteers, help, tools, compost, and mulch. Let us know your garden workday plans and needs now so we can start getting resources sent your way. WORKDAY SURVEY

The School Garden Network can be accessed by calling KACCB at 706-613-3501 x309 or emailing stacy.smith@accgov.com.

August Tasks from the ACC Extension Office
  • Harvest and use summer crops.
  • Get the beds weeded and ready for fall planting.

  • Use starter solution on transplanted crops.
  • Water the garden as needed to prevent drought stress.

TEACH!

A scavenger hunt is a great way to welcome students to the gardens! Whether it is their first time at the school, their first time in the garden, or if they are old pros-- setting them free in the garden with a task to complete eases them into learning! Put them in teams and let them start learning to work together with their new classmates.

Growing Minds has a great collection of scavenger hunts to choose from that cover a variety of ages and topics and can be modified to fit your needs. They are in word, so they are printable and changeable. Scavenger hunts!

And teachers aren't exempt! Take some time to find these items as you explore your school!
1) Your gardens! Many schools have existing gardens that don't get used because no one takes the time to seek them out and see what's up with them.
2) Other garden teachers. Form a team to help lighten the load. Bring up gardening at a staff meeting and see who else is interested.
3) Gardening Parents. Attend a PTO or PTA meeting, let the parents know that you plan to use the garden and ask for help. Connect with the garden committee or ask them to form one. A garden workday is a great way for families to spend time at the school with their students and help out!
4) Your community gardening resources. For this one, come on out to the Fall School Garden Festival and learn about the help and resources available to your school.
